Fashion can be ephemeral or it can be profound

“A 2500-word critical essay showing a coherent and comprehensive understanding of a range of sociological and anthropological theories and their application to the analysis of fashion and culture. Students will critically address the next social, cultural, ethical or environmental shift and its impact on the global fashion culture. Fashion can be ephemeral or it can be profound. Through referencing existing structures (social, political, historical, artistic, etc.) compose a critical essay that addresses fashion’s cultural position as an instigator of social change, artistic endeavour or as an extension of the entertainment industry (choose one or any combination).

If your artwork is 3-D, create the piece to be at least its actual size or a scaled-down version to no less than 8.5” x 11”x1”. In re-creating a 3-D piece, you will need to try and get several views of the piece, so that you can create a 3-D copy of the piece.

Copying a Master

Here is the textbook –

Chapters 17-21 or Copying a Master – Choice of your artist you are researching, or another artist’s work in Chapters 17-21. You will be making a handmade copy of the artwork you are researching. Dependent on the type of art your chosen piece is, you will be creating a two-dimensional or three-dimensional copy of the artwork. The goal of this hands-on assignment is to explore the artwork you are researching in a more tactile way. Hopefully you will gain some more insight into how the piece was made and what decisions the artist had to make concerning composition.

The copy will consist of the following:

Note the original dimensions of your chosen artwork, so that you can scale the piece down in size, or make the piece its actual size. If you need help in figuring out the dimensions, or how to scale a work down, please contact the instructor.

Note the original materials used to create the artwork.

Print out or photocopy an 8.5” x 11” image of the artwork you are attempting to copy, to use to refer to for your hand-made copy.

If your artwork is 2-D, on a minimum of 8.5” x 11” paper, you will be creating your copy. If the original piece is not to scale of a piece of 8.5” x 11” paper, you might be creating a slightly smaller copy.

If your artwork is 3-D, create the piece to be at least its actual size or a scaled-down version to no less than 8.5” x 11”x1”. In re-creating a 3-D piece, you will need to try and get several views of the piece, so that you can create a 3-D copy of the piece.

Materials for both pieces are your choice. The minimum choice of materials for 2-D work is pencil and colored pencil on paper, and the minimum choice of materials for 3-D work is air-dry clay. Contact the instructor to consult on materials, if you are unsure what to purchase to create your sculpture out of.

For the 2-D work, there are two options to create a copy by hand. First, you can draw through observation and the second method is through using a grid to transfer an image. To learn more about how to use the grid to transfer or enlarge an image from the original, go to the following:

For 3-D work, you will use the multiple views of your piece to create the three-dimensionality of your piece.

Briefly describe, identify its salient features and determine how successfully these features have been implemented given the choices made in the composition of the work.

Aesthetics

Final paper. An important part of the learning process is the ability to apply the concepts and techniques studied in this course to a related domain of your choice. The final paper is meant to provide exactly this opportunity. You will be expected to write a 1,500-word paper (or a 2,500-word piece if you need writing credit) applying the concepts and techniques examined in this course to understand some aspect of a work in the arts. More specifically, you should evaluate an artwork (or some artworks) in one of the arts (literature, cinema, performing arts, fine arts, music, or architecture), depending on of your choice. You should briefly describe it, identify its salient features and determine how successfully these features have been implemented given the choices made in the composition of the work. preferably as a Word file, making sure that the name of the files for each of your assignments is in the format:

‘YourLastName _YourFirstName _TypeOfAssignment.doc’. (The final paper corresponds to 40% of the final grade.)

To what extent do you feel Morelli’s and Berenson’s methods of connoisseurship succeed in determining which artist painted the works?

THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES CONNOISSEURSHIP 1 (Old Master Paintings)

(10% UNIT MARK)

How do we come to attribute paintings to certain artists? Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891) is one of several art historians who have attempted to codify the ways in which we make decisions based on stylistic details. Read the assigned text, Michael Hatt and Charlotte Klonk, Art History: A Critical Introduction to Its Methods (Manchester: Manchester UP, 2013), pp. 48–64, which explains Morelli’s methods and Bernard Berenson’s response to them. Then, using their approach, discuss the attribution of paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (MET) of the following painters. You will need to analyse and describe the differences between ONE OF THE PAIRS of artists below.

To what extent do you feel Morelli’s and Berenson’s methods of connoisseurship succeed in determining which artist painted the works? You will need to reflect on how useful, or how limiting you find their approaches. Are there aspects of the task that you feel they have ignored or failed to give enough weight?

Study paintings by ONE OF THE PAIRS of artists below in the MET.

Botticelli and Carlo Crivelli (you may focus on religious works)

Bronzino and Moroni (you may focus on portraiture)

The paintings supplied all have excellent high-resolution images that can be accessed online through the Metropolitan Museum of Art Website. To access high-quality images, use the links below or the Search tool to the right of the following webpage:

Illustrations must be supplied to support your argument. You should be working at a level of close detail.

note that each of these artists is well represented at the National Gallery. You are encouraged to deploy the National Gallery paintings as comparative material.

How are the building similar? How are they different? Be sure to discuss function. How is each building used? Who uses it? What are the materials? Architectural details? Organization of the building?

Ancient Greek or Ancient Roman building

Choose one Ancient Greek or Ancient Roman building from the list below and pair it with one building in Los Angeles. Then write a compare and contrast essay. How are the building similar? How are they different? Be sure to discuss function. How is each building used? Who uses it? What are the materials? Architectural details? Organization of the building?

As with the other compare and contrast essays, you must discuss the works together. So if you talk about the material of one building, you need to talk about the material of the other building right after.

Why is the theme of athletics and the body important? How does each artwork depict the human body? Why?

Assignment #6.

To read about the pair click on the following links: Discobolus (

The comparison essay should answer the question, “How are objects similar?” and “How are objects different?” The key to a good compare and contrast essay is to organize the sentences by theme where both works of art are discussed all the way through. What are the themes? You can choose any of the formal qualities – such as style, material, size, use of line, etc. that you already read about in Assignment #6. You also should include a discussion of the objects’ functions and meanings. So why is the theme of athletics and the body important? How does each artwork depict the human body? Why?

The essay pair should be minimum two pages in length,
Single-Spaced,
Times New Roman,
12 point font, 1 inch margins.

(2) Design Scenario

Based on Heatherwick’s creative process, select a material in your environment to inspire a product: chair, light fixture, or accessory. Photograph the material, show 6 different photos from different angles of the material. Develop 2 quick sketches with annotations of the product.

Write a brief paragraph about the design.

What was the object used for? Who used it? Where was it originally located? Who was supposed to see or not see the works?

**Remember, the most important thing is to discuss the works together. So for example, if you make a point that the subject matter is similar – you need to explain why that is important and talk about both works together. Or if the subject matter is different – why is it different? what is being portrayed in each work?
