Identify the individual images used in your overall composition. What theme ties them together? Describe why you chose the specific colors assigned to each image layer. How do they look, together?

Art Project 4

Refer to the Instructions for Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 for more-complete descriptions of all of the required items for your “journal.”

Your file submission in this assignment must be a single PDF file — a document containing a series of 3 images, each with accompanying written sections as follows:

Image 1

Created according to the Instructions for Phase 1.

Writing to accompany Image 1

You should include answers to the following questions, about this first image:

Which object did you choose to work with?

(from the list of five potential astronomical objects)

In just a couple of sentences, briefly describe what differences you can see between how the object looks across the three separate images included.

(Suggestions: You might look for such things as stars or other small features that are extra-bright in one wavelength and dimmer in others, or clouds of gas or dust that are overall brighter in one image than another. Your description can be very general, focusing on appearances only and not concerned with scientific interpretation of why there are those differences; that’s in the next question.)

Again, in just a couple of sentences, briefly consider the reason for visible differences between one wavelength image’s contents versus another’s.

(Hints: Recall previous lessons on the relationship between temperature and color, of stars’ ages, and — if applicable — of where in galaxies certain kinds of stars are more likely to be found.)

Image 2

Created according to the Instructions for Phase 2.

Writing to accompany Image 2

You should include answers to the following questions, about this second image:

Why did you make your choices for hue/saturation/lightness for your second image?

Are any particular details more or less visible in your Image 2 than in Image 1?

Image 3

Created according to the Instructions for Phase 3.

Written Statement for Image 3

This should be at least 200 words for full credit. It should describe your original composition, the component images, colors, and your overall theme:

Identify the individual images used in your overall composition. What theme ties them together?

Describe why you chose the specific colors assigned to each image layer. How do they look, together?

Who is your artist and/or artifact? What is the date of the artifact? Briefly describe this artist’s context and how this influences the creation of the artwork.

The Research Encounter is an opportunity for students to investigate a specific artist and/or artifact. In this exploration, students will discover the impact of this artist or piece of art on the art world. The student will determine how the belief systems, values, and norms of the society and era this artist created in affected this artist’s output. Finally, the student will relate this information to the present world of art to the class in a PPTX presentation with audio.
Each student will be assigned a topic and date of submission by their instructor. Students are asked to provide a slide presentation that will answer the following:
1. Who is your artist and/or artifact? What is the date of the artifact?
2. Briefly describe this artist’s context and how this influences the creation of the artwork. (This should include the birth and death dates of the artist.)
3. Briefly discuss the elements of the artifact and the purpose of this work. Give one interesting fact about the artwork.
4. Briefly explain why this artist’s work is essential or important. Is your topic a giant of the arts? Is this artifact a masterpiece?
5. List your sources.

Each presentation should contain five to seven slides. Each presentation’s audio portion should be between five to ten minutes in length. Use at least three sources beginning with our text. There will be plenty of information on your artist; your job will be to present the essential information on this author.

Are the actions on the screen relevant to the times? What is the theme? Does the theme of this film speak to our era of time? How does this theme speak to this generation?

Film Critic

For this module assignment, you are the critic. Choose a film to critique. (Try to choose a film you can view multiple times.)
In essay form, answer the following:

Name of the movie, director, and year it was produced. (Give a brief context of the director, and year this director created in.
Is the style used to create this film unique to the art form? (Remember, film is an art of choices; name and describe one or two interesting directorial choices in this movie. These could include use of montage or camera angles. Or, the choices could include use of music or use of POV shots.)
Do the characters have complex inner lives? (Name two of the leading characters, and describe their context, actions, and reactions.)
Are the actions on the screen relevant to the times? (What is the theme? Does the theme of this film speak to our era of time? How does this theme speak to this generation?)
Is the integrity of the audience respected? (Especially comment on the ending of this movie. Is it fitting? Does it make sense?)
Write AT LEAST one paragraph for questions 2 – 4. Use good grammar and mechanics, and proper citation of sources. Do not use filler words such as “I think,” “In my opinion,” or “I feel.”

You do not have to follow the order of these questions in your essay. You will find more discourse on these questions at the back of our cinema chapter.

What was the object used for? Who used it? Where was it originally located? Who was supposed to see or not see the works?

Write a compare and contrast short essay

King Menkaure and Queen ( https://smarthistory.org/king-menkaure-mycerinus-and-queen/ ) and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and their Daughters ( https://smarthistory.org/house-altar-depicting-akhenaten-nefertiti-and-three-of-their-daughters/ )

The essay should answer the question, “How are the objects similar?” and “How are the objects different?” The key to a good compare and contrast essay is to organize the paragraphs by theme where both works of art are discussed all the way through. What are the themes? Choose any of the formal qualities – such as style, material, size, use of line, texture, shape, etc. that you already read about for Assignment #6. You also need to include a discussion of the objects’ functions and meanings. So what was the object used for? Who used it? Where was it originally located? Who was supposed to see or not see the works?

What do you think the artist was trying to say? What was the artist’s objective? Does the work convey any sort of mood or idea? Do you think there is an underlying message or moral to the work of art? Is there a certain objective or agenda promoted in the artwork?

Art Institute of Chicago

Description

Before you analyze a work of art you need to describe it. Identify the subject of the work of art (ex: still life, portrait, history painting, landscape, etc.). Thoroughly describe the work of art’s appearance: the overall scene and specific observations.

Imagine that the reader has never seen the work of art before; your description should be detailed and evocative enough for the reader to imagine the work of art in his/her head. A photograph is not a substitute for a thorough and accurate description. Use vocabulary words where applicable.

This is where you should demonstrate an understanding of the subject of the work of art (see the information about research, below). If the work of art is a story from the Bible, for instance, summarize the story and identify the characters in the scene. If the work of art depicts a subject from history, tell me what happened.

Interpretation

This should be the longest part of your essay. Try to understand the meaning of the work of art based on your observations.

What do you think the artist was trying to say? What was the artist’s objective? Does the work convey any sort of mood or idea? Do you think there is an underlying message or moral to the work of art? Is there a certain objective or agenda promoted in the artwork?

Judgment/ Conclusion

This element of your essay is similar to the interpretation. You are telling me your reaction to the piece. Why did you choose this work of art, out of all the works in the museum? Discuss the strengths and merit of the work of art. Your judgment will be based on education as well as personal preference.

Consult the instructions below for requirements on the length and formatting of the essay. Your essay should follow the exact same formula of Description, Analysis, Interpretation, Judgment, and Vocabulary.Your title page, however, will be slightly different:

Why is/isn’t this about art? How did you feel when reading this chapter? Was this about a “healthy’ relationship with art? How did the art in this chapter affect its creator? What element of art was this chapter dealing with?

“The Accidental Masterpiece, On the Art of Life and Vice Versa” by Michael Kimmelman

You need to get the amazon kindle app to access the book

After reading the entire book provide a chapter by chapter reaction. Give a brief synopsis of the content and your reaction. Include such themes as:

Why is/isn’t this about art?

How did you feel when reading this chapter?

Was this about a “healthy’ relationship with art? How did the art in this chapter affect its creator? What element of art was this chapter dealing with?

Why do you think Kimmelman gave the title “The Accidental Masterpiece” to this book?

Have you ever created an accidental masterpiece? Do you know anyone who has? Have you ever seen one-where and when? Explain thoroughly.

Now select the chapter you most identified with and expand upon it. Do some research about the content, artist, technique. Explain why you chose this chapter. Include images if you feel they are helpful.

What is your overall impression of the book? Has it changed your idea of what Art is?

This paper is to be 4-6 12point double spaced pages, not including images.

Make sure you proofread and give original thoughts. If you use other sources give them credit. Wikipedia is not an acceptable resource for this class. Avoid using amazing and awesome when describing art.

What is Indigenous knowledge? How is Indigenous knowledge is used? how is ownership of knowledge connected to colonial violence and power? how to define ‘responsibility’ and what is an ethical way to deal with Indigenous art in the context of settler societies?

Indigenous Art, Knowledge and Human Rights

Document Analysis Assignment

Cover page with title INDIGENOUS ART, KNOWLEDGE, AND HUMAN RIGHTS

There are two ‘documents’ included in this document series. You must include both in your analysis.

The 2 documents are as follows:

1) Indigenous Arts Protocols

2) “How to Steal a Canoe” by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson (Mississauga Nishnaabeg)

Document series engages a discussion about Indigenous art, knowledge production/world making (another way to think about what epistemology means), and human rights over knowledge ownership. One of the clips features several Indigenous artists, thinkers, and musicians talking about Indigenous protocols and the question of ethical engagement and ‘reciprocity’ with Indigenous epistemological creativity. The second clip is an animated version of a short story written by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. It deals with settler colonialism, stolen knowledge, and the issue of reparations/returning of Indigenous art to its rightful place/owner. You are being asked to think about: what is Indigenous knowledge? How is Indigenous knowledge is used? how is ownership of knowledge connected to colonial violence and power? how to define ‘responsibility’ and what is an ethical way to deal with Indigenous art in the context of settler societies?

Assignment can be divided in three sections:

1. a section outlining (but not summarizing) the main points and arguments made in the two clips provided;

2. a second section that includes an analysis and explanation about the history of colonial and racial violence and the stealing of Indigenous art/knowledge (there is no shortage of information on this); and

3. a third section that includes an analysis of how the material in the documents can help you directly illustrate the theoretical concepts about ethics, epistemic violence, solidarity, colonial violence, etc.

NOTE: You are required to do research for this assignment. Include the “Land as Pedagogy’ by Leanne Simpson article. Also, you must find peer- reviewed articles, chapters in books, or monographs to complete this assignment .

You might want to consult work done by Linda Tuhiwai Smith such as her book titled, Decolonizing Methodologies.
