In your short response (5-7 sentences), what work(s) by Ai Weiwei do you consider social practice and why?  Be sure to justify using the definition you read from the Tate.

Ai Weiwei and Social Practice

1. In your short response (5-7 sentences), what work(s) by Ai Weiwei do you consider social practice and why?  Be sure to justify using the definition you read from the Tate!

Not all of Ai Weiwei’s work can be classified as social practice but some definitely can!
First, read the Tate Modern’s definition of (https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/s/socially-engaged-practice) art form.
Does this still feel a little unusual?  We have seen architecture, and many art objects, and we have deliberated on the value of performance.  Social practice is different and can involve traditional art objects or processes, but the engagement of the public is a big part of the work.  Here is French street artist JR if you would like to see another example of social practice.

A paragraph that places the object into its cultural context. What was the nature of the culture in which the artist/architect/sculptor produced this object? What was going on in society at this time?
A paragraph or two that compares this object with other objects made at the same time in different parts of the world. How is this object unique and how is it the same? What do you think that it says about the culture in which it was produced?

Non-Western and Western Art

The following discussion is worth 80 points. Using the Heilbrunn Timeline, identify one non-Western work of art and one Western work of art that is similar. For example, if you find one non-Western bowl for your non-Western piece, chose something similar, like a bowl or dish for your Western choice. In addition to posting your own thread, read and comment on at least TWO of your fellow classmates’ posts. These peer responses are worth 10 points of your total score.

Based on the answers they have provided, your reply should discuss whether you agree or disagree with their choices. Support your responses.

This discussion is worth 80 points and will be evaluated using the HUM 106 Discussion Rubric. This rubric is available under the Grading Information tab of the Discussion area, as well as in the course Grade Center.

Identify the work of art, telling me the name of the title of the work, the approximate date it was made, and the culture that produced it.

The Kongo Power Figure

Instructions:
* Go the Metropolitan Museum’s website www.metmuseum.org
* Type the accession number of the assigned work of art into “search” at the top right of the page. The number is 2008.30
* Look at the image carefully and thoroughly. Zoom in on details.
* When you are ready to write, follow these three steps:

1) Identify the work of art, telling me the name of the title of the work, the approximate date it was made, and the culture that produced it. (This can be done in one or two sentences.)

2) Describe the physical appearance of the work of art––carefully putting what you see into your own words. This is called formal analysis. Write about the colors, textures, and overall form of the work of art. Then methodically describe the piece. You could, for instance, describe this work starting at the edges and moving toward the center. Apply relevant vocabulary terms. (Aim for writing at least four to five sentences of formal analysis.)

3) Discuss briefly what the original function of this work of art was. (This can be done in about two sentences.)
Important: Do not depend on the text of the Met’s website for your writing. Use your own eyes, your notes, and what you have learned in class to guide you. Do not copy or paraphrase what you see on metmuseum.org or any other source. This is plagiarism.

Does changing our eating habits have an impact on environmental sustainability, or is the growing popularity just good marketing from companies?

Eating habits

Does changing our eating habits have an impact on environmental sustainability, or is the growing popularity just good marketing from companies?

The change in eating habits have an impact on environmental sustainability because an eating pattern that is higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods can decrease the negative impact of food on the environment.
