The Judiciary

Topic: The Judiciary is a powerful branch of government in Canada. While the function of the courts is to administrate law, we know its powers are far more wide reaching. Given the court’s impact on the development, evaluation, and administration of public law in Canada the question remains whether or not judges should be elected for the purposes of ensuring democratic accountability. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of subjecting judges to the electoral process. Remember to address the following issues: democratic legitimacy, the appointment process, judicial independence and impartiality.

Writing assignment for the movie The Monuments Men
Synopsis:
Several middle aged men, many art historians, artists, scholars, museum staff and curators, left comfortable jobs and families to enlist in the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MMFA). They found themselves traipsing through bombed-out Europe tracking down elusive paintings, statues and protecting architecture that would otherwise be lost or destroyed.
These men, originally American and then later British, petitioned President Franklin D. Roosevelt to consider creating this division of the military. While they had support from FDR, Eisenhower and Churchill, they had little to no supplies and sometimes met with resistance once in Europe.
All the while, Hitler, obsessively confiscated art that supported his Nationalist ideology and at the same time purged Europe of modern artists. Their task was to find and return the artistic and cultural treasures that were stolen and hidden throughout Europe.
The movie focuses on characters derived from the original dozen of Monuments Men who were on the ground in Normandy after D-Day (June 6, 1944). Another twenty or so men where gradually added until the end of the hostilities with the awesome responsibility of covering all of Northern Europe.
