Does the desire to preserve these icons become a form of worship?

Students will write a five (5) page paper, including a bibliography, investigating the history of Iconoclasm, including the current destruction of religious and historic artworks by Islamic fundamentalist groups. According to Mark Getlein, writing the 10th edition of Living with Art, “Images have played an important role in almost every religion in the world.” Through the ages much of the world’s religious art has been transferred from places of religion to museums and are now looked upon as cultural and historical icons. Does the desire to preserve these icons become a form of worship? If so, is worshiping works of art not the same as worshiping what they represent? That is the iconoclastic point of view.

Through well-reasoned, logical supported conclusions, students will demonstrate how communities—regional, national, and global—can effectively respond in a socially responsible manner to both religious needs and the preservation of our historical culture.

Papers should be written following the MLA format and guidelines. Papers should be five (5) pages, including a bibliography page. Each page should be numbered and double-spaced with the font no larger than 12. I do not require a cover page, however page 1 should include the following header in the upper left corner:

What color scheme is used? How does this affect the meaning?

Critical Thinking Paper Art Appreciation
The critical thinking paper will be an analysis of a work of art of your choice at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Museum will be open again June 30. Considering Covid-19, you have the option of going in person or looking on their website for an artwork. There is no comparison of looking at an artwork in person, but it might not be realistic. I am leaving that up to you to decide. Your paper will be submitted in the Journal the week it is due. The Journal can be found under Course Content. You must include an image of the work with your paper, both can be submitted as an attachment (make sure the image is small enough to see easily). You must cite any references you use although references are not required. This is not a research paper, but a paper demonstrating your observation and critical thinking process.
Cleveland Museum of Art 11150 East Blvd
Cleveland, OH 44106
Paper Format: 300-500 words. If citing a source, you can use any method, but make sure it is consistent. No plagiarism.
Questions to ask when analyzing the artwork:
7 questions on critical thinking from your preface.
What is the role of the artists?
Is the work representational or nonrepresentational?
Describe the formal elements – line, space, color & light, texture, pattern, design elements.
Is the work expressive (emotional) or analytical?
What color scheme is used? How does this affect the meaning?
What medium is used?
The above list is for ideas. Each work will be different and what is written about may vary. Everyone should start by looking at the artwork and describing what you see (the subject matter), then what that means (content). Remember artwork can be open ended. If you think this is the case with your artwork, you need to make this clear. You can give more than one interpretation if you feel it is necessary. If you go to the museum, you can write about your experience at the museum. How it is different seeing an artwork in person. Make sure to have a clear introduction, body, & conclusion for your paper. This means you should have at least 3 paragraphs, not one giant paragraph. I do not want a list, but a well written analysis of the artwork & museum experience. Your introduction should be something that captures your
reader’s attention, the body should lay-out the nuts and bolts of the artwork, and the conclusion should sum up your experience with the artwork &/or the museum. Remember to spell check and use complete sentences!

Create a playlist to promote your own personal health – either physical or mental health.

Final Assessment Outline

In this assignment you need to create a playlist to promote your own personal health – either physical or mental health. To do this, you will carefully choose music that suits the purpose of the playlist and draw on concepts and theory covered in lectures to strategically organise the order of songs. Actively listen to the music you choose for your playlist to test that it meets your intended purpose.

Word count:

2000 words – Undergraduate and Honours students

3000 words – Masters students

Introduction (approx. 500 words):

In the introduction, describe your selected purpose for the playlist and summarise key theories about how music could be used to promote the desired outcome. Clearly describe the process you used to create the playlist, stating how you went about selecting the songs and the order.

Assignment body (approx. 1200 words):

In the body of the assignment, list the order of the 10 pieces of music included in the playlist. The songs must be recorded and released pieces of music that your marker could look up and listen to if need be. Discuss your experience of each track and use the literature to explain how it either contributed to your identified health purpose, or how and why it was unsuccessful. Include descriptions of the musical aspects (the beat, style, structure etc) and non-musical aspects (associations, artists, lyrics etc) of the track that are relevant. You must draw on academic literature throughout the assignment to justify your claims about the benefits of music for this purpose. Dedicate approximately 120 words per song and include the song title and reference details as the subheading for each song (these titles are not included in the word count).

Conclusion (approx. 300 words):

In the conclusion, reflect on any potential mental or physical health benefits that may result for others through the construction of a playlist similar to yours, including any ideas you have about the use of music to promote health in the community.

Headings: Use the songs as Headings for the body of the assignment. Please include reference to each song as the subheadings including Track Title, Performing Artist and year of publication, with information about the Composer and Record Company if information is relevant.

  • We recommend APA6 referencing style, however, your references can be in any style as long as they are consistent. As stated in the description, you must include a full reference to the songs you use.
