Describe your perceptions and interpretations of the symbolic and spatial meanings and your conclusions regarding this subject’s response to the assessment.

The work to go off of will be in additional materials

Please submit your edited Assessment here. The 3-4 page written report should include:

An image of the subject’s artwork.
Brief background of the subject. Do not use their real name or disclose any identifying information. Do include an initial or pseudonym, gender identity and/or pronouns, age, and brief details of your relationship (i.e. are you close or distant, is this a family member), and how they presented for the assessment—did they seem comfortable, confident, happy, etc. and how can you tell? This is the WHO of your paper.
Assessment chosen, reasoning, and method employed. This is the WHY section validating your choice of approach, materials, and assessment. If you gave them lots of choices to make, explain this approach. A high-functioning young adult participant that appears comfortable with art materials, for example, may benefit from having creative choices and find them empowering and enticing. An ageing adult that has not touched art supplies since childhood or a regressed and upset individual may benefit from more containment, guidance, and boundaries so as to avoid overwhelm.
Subject’s Response: Describe the verbal and non-verbal responses you observe in the participant, method of execution, receptivity to the directive, etc. This is the HOW. How did your participant approach the task? Where on the page did they start, and with what materials? Did they appear excited, hesitant, self-deprecating, etc.? What sort of pressure did they use; how much time did they take; did their demeanor change during the process? You can quote yourself and your participant in this section for brevity and clarity.
Analysis of the Art Product: Describe your perceptions and interpretations of the symbolic and spatial meanings and your conclusions regarding this subject’s response to the assessment. Follow the art closely! Refer to Focal Points and other assessment reading materials for guidance.
Use at least TWO properly cited sources to support your conclusions. These can be drawn from class reading materials, lecture content, or independent research.

Explain your redesign. Provide a narrative description (about 150 words) explaining the purpose and significance of your street redesign

Mapping Streets and Making Improvements

In this assignment, you will create maps of conditions on a street in your hometown, analyze how it could be improved and propose a redesign of the street.

1.) Create a Hometown Street Plan map. Choose a street in your hometown neighborhood. Choose a segment equivalent to about one lengthy city block and draw an overhead or aerial view of it, either manually (with paper and pencils, markers, colored pens, etc.) or digitally (using computer-aided tools such as Autodesk CAD, Adobe Illustrator, Google SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop, etc.). Label various elements of the street that you have learned about in this and other modules: sidewalks, travel lanes, street trees, bike ways, public transit stops, street furniture (e.g. benches or trash cans), traffic control devices (e.g. stop signs or traffic lights). No aerial view Google images will be accepted. Scan your drawings and upload them as a PDF. Scanners are available on campus in the libraries. If on-campus scanners are unavailable for you, you can consider downloading scanner apps on your mobile phones. Here is an option: If you want to take a photo of your map, please make sure the map is clear with an high resolution to view by your peers and TAs.

2.) Create a Hometown Street Cross-Section map. Draw a horizontal slice of the same street section that you focused on in Step 1. (Think of cutting a submarine sandwich and then looking at its layered contents). Label the street elements. Scan your drawings and upload them as a PDF. Scanners are available on campus in the libraries. Here is an example for your understanding:

3.) Analyze the street. Provide a narrative description (about 150 words) of your maps that gives an overview of your hometown street and an interpretation of neighborhood street patterns (including advantages and disadvantages). Discuss one particular street design element that makes an impression on you, for positive or negative reasons, and explain how that element could be further developed. Here is a helpful resource on street design elements:

4.) Create an updated Hometown Street Plan map and Cross-Section map. Create a new version of each of your original maps in which you experiment with ways to improve the street design as presented in this and other modules. Options include converting it to a “complete street,” which provides access opportunities in equal measure for walking, bicycling, riding public transit and driving. Label street elements as described above.

5.) Explain your redesign. Provide a narrative description (about 150 words) explaining the purpose and significance of your street redesign, explaining why you added or omitted certain street design elements.

In addition to the requirements above:

– All elements of your maps MUST be your original work. You may NOT use a base map from another source (though you may look at an online mapping service such as Google Maps to refresh yourself on the configuration of your site).

– Present your work on only 2 pages (fit drawings on one and written work on the other), letter size (8.5” x 11”). The maps must be large enough for labels to be legible.

– Include an original and creative title, and your name.

– Include the name of your street and hometown.

– Label each section accordingly. Example – Street Plan Map: Aerial view, Street Plan Map: Cross section, Redesign, Street Analysis (or as you see fit)

What impact do you think depictions such as this have on public opinion about prisons and punishment?

Word length: 500 words (including in-text references in the Harvard referencing system). The 10% +/- rule applies for this assessment.

Marks:

The marking for this final Reflection Journal Submission (as with the two earlier Reflections) will be done with the standard marking rubric where students are awarded an N, P, C, D and HD. See the Marking Rubric for detailed marking criteria.

Purpose: This assessment provides important opportunities for self-reflection in relation to a particular reading, topic or case study, without the formal requirements of an essay.

Instructions: For this final piece of assessment, you will be asked to watch an episode of a fictional TV prison drama. The way prisons, prisoners, and prison staff are portrayed in popular media might differ quite a lot from the reality of imprisonment. Or, conversely, are they more accurate than one may assume? Based on what you have learned throughout this semester, write 500 words reflecting on how accurately the popular depiction of prison life corresponds with reality. What are the main differences? What impact do you think depictions such as this have on public opinion about prisons and punishment? And what can be the consequences of such possibly distorted views on actual practice and policy?

*it can be any prison crime show episode, so like orange is the new black, prison break, Wentworth etc.

What do you think the role of public policy and/or government is with regard to the arts?

What do you think the role of public policy and/or government is with regard to the arts? How do we decide issues like this? What’s the role of the artist or the creative in making such policies? What’s the relationship between creativity, culture, and civil society? Or what would you like that relationship to be?

Lots of questions! What are your thoughts? Play around in this.

Why does the social status of the artist/artisan appear to vary in different periods of human history?

Artist’s Materials and Techniques

Note: You will be expected to submit an annotated bibliography. This comprises 5% of the total mark for the course. The bibliography can comprise print sources (books, articles, and chapters – these may be in physical or online form), websites, podcasts, and videos. You are strongly encouraged to use websites created by an academic institution or a museum (these are websites that end with .edu, .ac.uk, and so on). While it may be necessary to make use of commercial websites in some cases,. The annotated bibliography should contain the full citation of the publication or website, including details such as author(s), editor(s), article/chapter title, book title, name of publisher, location of publication, year of publication, page range, website title, URL, and so on. The annotations should provide brief details about the content/nature of the publication, the arguments advanced by the scholar (where relevant), and what you drew from it. Write about three or four sentences for each one. You do not need to include websites that you have used only for gathering images. For your projects you should be consulting 5-8 publications, and at least half of them should be print sources (i.e. books, e-books, articles, and chapters).

Essay

The essay should be 4-5 page in length. Remember that the goal of an essay is to put forward an interpretation of a body of evidence and not merely to summarize it. In other words, you need to collect some data on your chosen topic and then introduce your own insights in order to tell the reader something new. Hence, you will need in the introduction to state what your essay will be about (i.e. the subject matter) but also make a statement of what you will argue through your presentation of the evidence. You should also make space at the end to have a conclusion. This needs to be more than just a summary of the content of the previous paragraphs; leave the reader with some additional insight into the topic. When you have collected your evidence, don’t start writing immediately; an effective strategy is to plan out on a piece of paper how you will arrange the content and interpretation. If you have a plan laid out it will be easier to write the introduction, and the ordering of the remaining paragraphs will be more straightforward. When you have fixed on a topic get in contact with me by email to discuss it, and do make an appointment for the office hour.

Choose one of the following subjects for your essay.

Note: Most of the essay subjects deal with general issues, but you are advised to focus your attention when you approach your essay. For instance, you may choose to limit your argument to a single region or period. In some of the essay subjects it may be a good idea to restrict your discussion to one or two media.

  1. Why does the social status of the artist/artisan appear to vary in different periods of human history? Should the consideration of social status have an impact on the way we understand the objects we study?
  2. Carving is a common technique for forming objects. What differences exist between the carving techniques used in organic materials, such as wood and ivory, and in various types of stone?
  3. What do we learn from about traditional craft practices by reading the accounts of artists/craftspeople, contracts, or the descriptions of art and architecture written during the Renaissance or Medieval periods?
  4. To what extent does a consideration of gender contribute to our understanding of traditional craft practices? In your answer you can also reflect on whether there are cultural and geographical factors that define gendered divisions in craft
  5. How well do major museum websites communicate information about the materials and methods that were involved in the manufacture of paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts? In this essay, pick on one or two major museum collections and offer critical responses to the ways in which manufacturing practices and materials are dealt with. How might greater attention to these issues enrich the experience of users of such sites?
