Analysis of the Port Macquarie-Sydney Route

Answer the following questions:

(a) Using an appropriate database, determine the share that the Port Macquarie-Sydney route has in the passenger throughput of Port Macquarie Airport between 2009 and 2019. Using calendar annual data, draw a line graph of this share between 2009 and 2019. Comment on the movements that you see in the graph. (5 Marks)

(b) Use an appropriate database to find the calendar annual seats operated on the Port Macquarie- Sydney route between 2009 and 2019. Graph the rate of change in Port-Macquarie-Sydney seats against the percentage change in passengers. Research the use of the “=correl (Datarange 1, Data range 2)” function in Microsoft Excel and find the correlation between passenger growth and seats growth for the route. Comment on your findings, discussing what is likely to be driving the strength of the correlation. (7 Marks)

(c) Use an appropriate database to find the monthly movement in Port-Macquarie-Sydney route passenger numbers between February 2008 and the most recent month. If there is no data available for particular months leave the observation point blank. Draw a line graph of the passenger numbers and comment on the seasonality, including the peak and off-peak months and why these months are peak and off-peak. (5 Marks)

(d) Use the monthly passenger data from (d) to comment on the recovery of the route from the impact of the Coronavirus. (3 Marks)

(e) Assume that the fuel cost per ASK for the market is 2.5 AU c/ASK and the non-fuel cost is 17.5 c/ASK. Also assume that the EBIT margin for the route is 10%. Use this information to find the 12 following for the aggregate of all airlines operating on the Port Macquarie-Sydney route for Calendar 2019: (i) the total operating costs, (ii) the total operating revenue, (iii) the level of EBIT, (iv) the passenger seat factor, (v) the RASK. Weather Hazards

Recently, several major airlines have experienced significant flight delays due to a weather phenomenon known as a “thunderstorm”. These thunderstorms have caused massive amounts of disruption to travelers, as well as the airlines themselves. Earlier this week, American Airlines cancelled more than three fifty flights due to thunderstorms across the southeastern United States. Delta Airlines also experienced significant delays, with more than five hundred flight delays in total. The cancellations and delays have been attributed to the intense thunderstorm that has been plaguing the region.

The impact of a thunderstorm on aviation is a serious issue that cannot be ignored. A thunderstorm can cause turbulence and wind shear, resulting in higher fuel consumption and increased risk of structural damage to aircraft (Olaganathan, 2020). Additionally, a thunderstorm can cause visibility to drop significantly, resulting in landing and take-off delays. These delays can be a huge inconvenience for both travelers and airlines alike. For travelers, a delay can mean missed connections and wasted time. For airlines, it can mean a significant loss in revenue due to the extra fuel and crew costs associated with the delays.

It is crucial to understand the weather patterns in the area and take preventable measures to minimize the impact of a thunderstorm on aviation. Airlines should use weather forecasting tools to anticipate potential thunderstorms and take steps to avoid them. Airlines should also be prepared to take extra precautions if a thunderstorm is encountered. These precautions could include slowing the aircraft to avoid turbulence or increasing the altitude to reduce the risk of structural damage. The impact of thunderstorms on aviation cannot be ignored. By understanding the weather patterns in the area and taking preventable measures, airlines can limit the disruption to travelers and the financial losses associated with thunderstorms.

Select a design problem, and describe how ergonomics and/or human factors in design, technology, or automation may help to mitigate/reduce/remedy this problem. Provide data from a scholarly source or related case to back up this proposal.

DISCUSSION ESSAY

You work for a large aviation company in the design section. In a high-level meeting today, your bosses have gathered all the design engineers together to discuss the fact that our aviation partners have reported an alarming increase in cockpit errors, flight crew mistakes, and other human performance problems in every aspect of industry operations in the past year. Customers are frustrated, management is unhappy, and this is trickling back to you, the design engineers, to see if you can offer some solutions for improvement based on your knowledge of the industry, design, ergonomics, and human factors.

Select a design problem, and describe how ergonomics and/or human factors in design, technology, or automation may help to mitigate/reduce/remedy this problem. Provide data from a scholarly source or related case to back up this proposal. Finally, explain how you will implement this proposal, track the success measures, and include a feedback loop and timeline.

In developing its Excellence through Quality program, Ames initially benchmarked against Xerox. Is benchmarking against another company’s quality program a good idea? What are the potential hazards and benefits involved?

Assignment 2

Write a 200-300 word paper answering the following question. question at the bottom.

Ames Rubber, headquartered in Hamburg, New Jersey, produces rubber rollers for office machines and specialized parts for the assembly of front-wheel-drive vehicles. The company was founded in 1949, has annual sales of $45 million to $50 million, and employs 445 people at three New Jersey sites. At first glance, Ames Rubber appears to be a typical small- to medium-sized manufacturing firm. However, the company has some truly extraordinary aspects that make it deserving of a second look, particularly in the area of quality.

Unlike other companies that have used quality as part of a turnaround strategy, Ames Rubber has been successful throughout its corporate life. During its early history, the company flourished by providing component parts to the high-growth copier and printer industries. In the early 1980s, the global environment changed, and even though the company had achieved benchmark status in the copier industry, its customers were demanding products that met more stringent quality requirements at a lower cost. This challenge was exacerbated by the emergence of increased competition from foreign competitors. It was clear to the managers at Ames that “business as usual” was no longer sufficient to satisfy their customers’ needs.

The company conducted an internal review of its operations. At this point, the company was unsure of how to improve its product quality in a cost effective manner. The review indicated that Ames was expending considerable effort to meet the quality, cost, and delivery requirements of its customers with no coherent quality plan in place to guide its efforts or anticipate customer requirements. As a result of this analysis, Ames decided to focus on the effectiveness of its manufacturing operations and quality efforts. Remembering that Xerox had launched a program called Leadership through Quality, Ames’ CEO Joe Marvel put his entire management team through Xerox’s supplier training program. Using Xerox as its benchmark, Ames announced that it was embarking on a new quality program entitled Excellence through Quality. The program was designed to achieve one common goal—the satisfaction of both internal and external customers.

Since it was introduced, the Excellence through Quality program has been effectively embraced by the entire Ames Rubber organization. The program involved the following key initiatives:

• Involvement groups. Everyone at Ames is a member of an involvement group, which meets a minimum of once a month. Involvement groups use team processes to improve product quality.

• Cost of quality and reject tracking. Reject tracking and cost of quality collection systems were established.

• Yield improvement teams. The company isolates the processes causing the greatest problems (“Pareto thinking”).

• Strategy review/operations review. Strategy review and operations review meetings were established to review short- and long-term progress toward quality objectives.

• Extensive training. The company provides its employees extensive training in such areas as statistical quality control, communication skills, leadership skills, and quality management.

Cultural changes also were made to facilitate the Excellence through Quality program. All Ames’s employees are called “teammates” to promote an egalitarian philosophy. Safety committees, made up of rank-and-file employees, were set up to ensure safety throughout the company’s facilities. To demonstrate his personal commitment to satisfying internal and external customers, CEO Marvel redesigned the company’s organization chart, with external customers on the top,
