Build upon your work from Week 8 of the previous course (DDBA 8161) to gain a deeper understanding of the alignment between research method (quantitative and qualitative) and the Problem Statement, specifically the “specific business problem.”

Revised Problem Statement

The University model for writing the DBA Problem Statement comprises four elements, to include the (a) hook, (b) anchor, (c) general business problem, and (d) specific business problem.

As you explore the DBA model for writing an effective business problem, you will notice the hook, anchor, and the general business problem can be very similar (if not exactly the same) for a quantitative and qualitative study addressing the same problem/phenomenon. However, a clear distinction exists between the specific business problem for a quantitative and qualitative study.

In this Assignment, you will build upon your work from Week 8 of the previous course (DDBA 8161) to gain a deeper understanding of the alignment between research method (quantitative and qualitative) and the Problem Statement, specifically the “specific business problem.”

Case Study: Opening Your New Dunkin’ Donuts Locations

Prior to completing this assignment, review the pertinent sections of Chapter 3. You have been the manager of a Dunkin’ Donuts store in the Midwest for the past two years. The store is owned by a Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee who owns 20 other Dunkin’ Donuts locations. Your employer took an employee inventory and examined all current employees. It has been noted by the owner that you have a highly successful track record. You have been recognized for doing an exceptional job staffing, leading, training, coaching, and managing people. You have been recognized for successfully managing all key components of your store and have successfully managed key business drivers such as cash, profits, growth, asset utilization, and people. In regards to the metrics that are used to measure their stores for sales, quality, and customer service, your store is the top performing store in their system.

Congratulations! You have just been promoted to district manager! The Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee sees your growth potential and the growth potential in your geographic area. The owner now has committed significant capital and plans to open five new locations over the next two years. You will be given complete autonomy, authority, and responsibility to structure, staff, and operate these five new locations. You will be playing a key role in this expansion for growth.

For this assignment, you will prepare a four to five-page paper in which you explain your chosen job design and organizational design as the new District Manager for Dunkin’ Donuts.

You must organize your paper using the following section headings and include additional section headings as needed:

Introduction—Provide a well-organized introduction to the paper.
Job Design—Explain your chosen job design including job analysis, job description and job specification.
Organizational Design—Explain why the chosen organizational design was chosen.

Create a correlation table of the 6 variables. Use Excel Data Analysis ToolPak to perform this procedure. Construct 2 scatter plots: (a) savings vs. salary, and (b) SC index vs salary. How are they related?

Fictional data

Consider the (fictional) data in the file C03_02.xlsx. For several hundred couples, it lists their education level, their annual combined salary, the market value of their home and cars, the amount of savings they have accumulated (in savings accounts, stocks, retirement accounts, and so on), and a self-reported “social climber index” on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being very unconcerned about social status and material items and 10 being very concerned about these). Prepare a report based on these data, supported by relevant charts and/or tables, that could be used in a book such as The Millionaire Next Door. Your conclusions can either support or contradict those of Stanley and Danko.

  1. Create a correlation (see section 3-4b from your textbook) table of the 6 variables (don’t include couple). You can use Excel Data Analysis ToolPak to perform this procedure (see Module 2: Video_chapter 3)
  2. Construct 2 scatter plots: (a) savings vs. salary, and (b) SC index vs salary. How are they related? Make sure to interpret your findings.
