Choose one newspaper or magazine article from Business Week, Forbes, The New York Times, or The Wall Street Journal (not a “blurb” or summary), published during the current semester (May-June 2022), that relates directly or indirectly to some analytical concept discussed in the course.  Demonstrate your understanding of your readings of this concept, making clear how you would interpret it, how you would use it, what it is important for, and any other relevant issues.

PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS, Summer 2022 – News Review Paper

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. You are to critically analyze or expand on the economic content of an article from The Wall Street Journal.  Your paper should be at least two but no more than three typed (Times New Roman or CG Times, 12 Point) pages in length. Single or double spacing is acceptable.  Place all of your graphs on separate sheets attached to the back of your paper.  Graph pages are not part of your three-page restriction.  This paper is worth 100 points. If you do not turn in this assignment, you will receive an INCOMPLETEin the assignment and a resulting 10-page paper will be due.  If your paper is late, it will not be accepted, except under extenuating circumstances. You must post/attach your paper into SafeAssign in the Assignments section of Blackboard dedicated for this project no later than the due date.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Choose one newspaper or magazine article from Business Week, Forbes, The New York Times, or The Wall Street Journal (not a “blurb” or summary), published during the current semester (May-June 2022), that relates directly or indirectly to some analytical concept discussed in the course.  Your write-up should:
    1. Demonstrate your understanding of your readings of this concept, making clear how you would interpret it, how you would use it, what it is important for, and any other relevant issues;
    2. Make clear the relevance of your concept to an article you picked by connecting them, i.e., explain point(s) made by author using concept.  Be careful to explain statements you make—don’t simply make assertions you don’t support.  The statement(s) you focus on from the article will generally report that “something happened”; your task is to fully explain why, using your concept.  Don’t simply use the article to illustrate your concept—your task is to explain the article using the concept. (For example, your concept may be a product demand function and your article might report that increased consumer income has raised the demand for cars; to simply describe a demand function graphically or algebraically, and then describe how higher income will increase demand fails to explain why higher income causes demand to increase, and that would be your task in this case).
  2. The first sentence of your 2 to 3 page paper, (excluding any graphs), should state which analytical concept you have selected.
  3. Highlight selection(s) of article your write-up addresses and somehow get the article to the professor by attaching it to an email or brining it into campus, with your write-up.  State source of article—title of newspaper or magazine, author, page, date—early in paper, somewhere in first paragraph.
  4. The more “challenging” the concept and/or article statement(s) you choose, the higher the probability of earning a higher grade for your effort.  I/we recognize this assignment is not easy—it is harder still if you do not take it seriously.  In that spirit, you are encouraged to begin your search for articles now so as to provide yourself with a reasonable number, from which you can choose the one most likely to result in the most satisfactory grade for the effort made.
  5. Papers will be graded primarily on content; however, your writing will also be considered, and if not at least satisfactory, could reduce the evaluation of your paper by as much as one letter grade.  Your write-up should be organized, logical, and clear with minimal spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.  Collaboration with peers is permitted only prior to initial write-up; if initial write-up is the final one, so be it, though you are encouraged to prepare a rough draft before the final write-up submission.
  6. Papers submitted after the “deadline” date will not be accepted for full credit, except in extenuating circumstances.

III. Your paper should include the following:

  1. Name, section, course, and instructor; left justified at the top of the first page.
  2. A title centered at the top of the first page.
  3. Number each page right justified at the top (smith 2, smith 3, etc.)
  4. Main text of analysis:

Discuss your views and/or experiences on how question types can effect the mood of the interview, the tone and tempo of an interview, the pace of the interview, the results of the interview, or any other effect you believe it may have.

Interviews

Instructions:

Interviews are an integral part of nearly every selection process in nearly every organization. In this discussion, I will give you three different interview-related topics to choose from to post your initial post on. You need only select one of the three for your initial post. Your reply can be to someone who posted on a different topic than your initial post.

Topic Option #1:

The interview style and approach you choose makes a large impact on how the interview is conducted and the results you obtain. Discuss your views and/or experiences on how one (or several) of the interview styles (structured, unstructured, semistructured) and/or their associated variants (one-on-one interviews, panel interviews, group interviews, stress interviews, etc.) can effect the mood of the interview, the tone and tempo of an interview, the pace of the interview, the results of the interview, or any other effect you believe it may have. You can approach this from either the interviewer or the applicant point of view, or both.

Topic Option #2:

Much like the interview style, the type of questions you use can have a huge impact on the interview and its results. Open-ended questions, closed-ended questions, behavioral questions, situational questions, and probing questions can all be used appropriately towards getting the information you want from an applicant. However, for best results, most interviewers will choose to use a mix of these different question types to achieve the right information balance for the role they are interviewing applicants for. The most important things are that your questions are designed well in the chosen style, your questions are job related, and your questions are not potentially inappropriate or illegal in what they are asking. Discuss your views and/or experiences on how question types can effect the mood of the interview, the tone and tempo of an interview, the pace of the interview, the results of the interview, or any other effect you believe it may have. You can approach this from either the interviewer or the applicant point of view, or both.

Topic Option #3:

One thing that is certain in life is that we all have biases (conscious or unconscious) which can be hard to recognize on our own and even harder to overcome on our own. The textbook identifies several different potential biases that can be easy to fall into as an interviewer. Discuss your views and/or experiences with how these potential biases can effect the mood of the interview, the tone and tempo of an interview, the pace of the interview, the results of the interview, or any other effect you believe it may have. You can approach this from either the interviewer or the applicant point of view, or both.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Each student will make one (1) original post in reply to the discussion instructions NLT than Friday of the Module week. Your original post should be a minimum of 100 words of your own thoughts on the matter. If you cite or quote other material, ensure that you include an APA citation and reference for the cited material.

Discuss how the idea demonstrates corporate social responsibility (CSR). Identify what the company has invested in as it relates to the communities they serve. Discuss how a good CSR plan helps the company gain competitive advantage.

Project Submission

Competencies

In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:

Determine how an organization gains a competitive advantage
Determine organizational risk and growth opportunities in order to develop a strategic plan
Defend business decisions in support of an organization’s strategic plan

Scenario

It’s the moment of truth: your opportunity to demonstrate why your new product or service is worth funding. You have done the research and know that the funding you seek can be a game changer for the company. Not only will it produce revenue and profitability, but more importantly, it will strategically set the company apart from its competition.

You just have to convince senior management.

In preparation, you have created a checklist for yourself to use in compiling information that includes research, feasibility of the idea via the BMC, scope of project (timeline included), project risk mitigation, DEI, CSR, and 24-month pro forma.

You know that anything can happen in a funding pitch. With this in mind, you are prepared to answer questions that encompass all aspects of the project.
Directions

Create a pitch for funding. In this pitch, you will have to convince senior management to greenlight the new product or service. Aspects of the pitch that must be addressed:

Value proposition: Describe the company’s current value proposition in the market.
Describe the selected company’s main product or service.
Discuss the company’s overall strategic plan.
Competitive advantage: Describe the competitive advantage the company will gain by funding the project.
Describe how you discovered an opportunity to do something better than your competitors.
Determine how the new product or service shifts the value proposition of the company.
Risks and opportunities: Establish the risks and growth opportunities of the company.
Determine if the new product or service could disrupt the current industry.
Identify the risks associated with the development of this new product or service.
Growth opportunities: Describe the areas of potential growth for the company.
Identify the growth opportunities within the company.
Explain how the competitive advantage allows for growth.
Distinguish as a new product or innovation: Distinguish the new product/service as an innovation or improvement on an existing product/service.
Determine if the product or service fits within the capabilities of the company.

Note: a company’s SWOT analysis or 10-K is an indicator of whether the new product or service could be feasible.

Explain how the new product or service adds to the portfolio of the company.
Target segment: Describe the targeted segment.
Identify the target customer.
Explain your blue ocean strategy.

Note: The new market is identified here.

Speculate sales: Speculate on the projected sales.
Justify your product or service by the numbers; discuss your projected revenue gain.

Note: it MUST have an ROI that justifies the project for investors and/or senior management.

Explain the risks associated with projected sales.
Speculate profitability: Speculate on the profitability of your proposed product or service.
Determine if the project is profitable.

Note: In this pitch for funding, senior management has to know that the project, based on market research, is speculated to be profitable. Use the company’s current income statement to project how the company’s profitability will be affected. Look to other companies in the marketplace with products or services similar to the one you are proposing as a basis for your projections. Note: these numbers are purely speculative.

Determine the impact on the functional areas of the business (accounting, marketing, sales, and so on).

CSR plan: Outline the plan to service the community or customers that purchase the product or service.
Discuss how the idea demonstrates corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Identify what the company has invested in as it relates to the communities they serve.
Discuss how a good CSR plan helps the company gain competitive advantage.

DEI plan: Summarize how the project will include a variety of perspectives to get a better unique value proposition.
Determine if the company has a corporate culture built on DEI.
Discuss how the project’s DEI plan fits into the company’s overall strategic plan.

Think about a recent workplace challenge that impacted team motivation consider a recent workplace challenge that impacted team motivation, and discuss the recent workplace challenge that you are addressing. Analyze the potential causes for the impact on team motivation. Identify how you used the three-step approach to create a pep talk .

Workplace challenge

In your paper, you will think about a recent workplace challenge that impacted team motivation consider a recent workplace challenge that impacted team motivation, and discuss the recent workplace challenge that you are addressing.
Analyze the potential causes for the impact on team motivation.
Identify how you used the three-step approach to create a pep talk .
Evaluate three additional research-based strategies you could use to motivate the team.

Assume that the result is a sample size beyond what you can obtain. Use the compromise function to compute alpha and beta for a sample half the size. Indicate the resulting alpha and beta. Analyze the result and decide if the study should be conducted with a smaller sample size. Explain your rationale.

This assignment consists of three parts:

(1) Sample Selection
Recommend the steps that should be taken to draw the particular sample described below. Format your response as a procedure.
a. A stratified sample of 75 doctors, 75 lawyers and 75 engineers who belong to a professional organization in that you belong to.
b. A simple random sample of 150 subscribers to your local newspaper.
c. A systematic sample of 250 subscribers from a subscriber list of a trade publication.

(2) A Priori Power Analysis
https://www.psychologie.hhu.de/arbeitsgruppen/allgemeine-psychologie-und-arbeitspsychologie/gpower.html
Download the G*Power software provided, and then use the software to submit the following:

a. Calculate the estimated sample size needed when given these factors:
• one-tailed t-test with two independent groups of equal size
• small effect size (see Piasta, S.B., & Justice, L.M., 2010)
• alpha =.05
• beta = .2 (Reminder: Power = 1 – beta)
• Assume that the result is a sample size beyond what you can obtain. Use the compromise function to compute alpha and beta for a sample half the size.
o Indicate the resulting alpha and beta.
o Analyze the result and decide if the study should be conducted with a smaller sample size. Explain your rationale.
o In the context of Type I and Type II error.
o Include a visual of the G* Power output matrix.

b. Calculate the estimated sample size needed to perform an ANOVA (fixed effects, omnibus, one-way) when given these factors:
• ANOVA (fixed effects, omnibus, one-way)
• small effect size
• alpha =.05
• beta = .2
• 3 groups
• Include a visual of the G* Power output matrix.

(3) Intended Research Sampling Method
Describe the sampling method that would be appropriate for your intended research.

a. Outline the problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions.
b. Describe the population of interest (also referred to as the theoretical population).
c. Identify the sampling frame to be used to recruit participants.
d. List criteria to be met for an interested person to participate in the research study.
e. Compute an estimated sample size.
f. Describe the recruitment procedure that might be used to draw the actual sample.

Length: Your paper should be between 5 – 10 pages not including title and reference page. Results of the G* power analysis that will add length to the paper.
References: Include a minimum of five (5) scholarly sources.

Research how other researchers have defined and operationalized constructs. Research three constructs selected from a given list. Provide a conceptual and operational definition of a construct you might measure for your intended research or quantitative example for this course.

Operationalized constructs

Research how other researchers have defined and operationalized constructs. You will research three constructs selected from a given list. You will also provide a conceptual and operational definition of a construct you might measure for your intended research or quantitative example for this course. Your full assignment response will include four constructs in total.

Conduct scholarly research that has been published within the past five years that measures three constructs selected from the list of constructs provided. Rather than present a traditional paper, organize the document by your selected constructs.

Provide a conceptual definition. Feel free to use direct quotes from the research article. Include appropriate APA style format. Then provide an operational definition that includes a measurement for the variable, and explain the level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio) that is generated.

List of Constructs. Select three constructs from the following list.
• Cognitive dissonance
• Customer delight
• Employee productivity
• Job satisfaction
• Leadership style
• Organizational commitment
• Organizational Culture
• Self-Concept

Once this is completed, provide a conceptual and operational definition of a construct you might measure for your intended research or quantitative example for this course.
