(deliverables: e.g. market survey, design product components, initial production & test and validation).
  1. 4. Resource allocation: you need to assign only human resource to the selected project. Less than 25% of the project budget should be allocated to your proposed human resources for the experts). How will you introduce, market and distribute your product or service? How do you anticipate pricing your product? How will that compare with your competitors? What market share do you hope to obtain by year 3 and year 5?

Business Idea: Commercialized Drip Irrigation Systems

Assignment Instructions:

Part A) Customer Discovery to Date

In one page (double spaced or single spaced is fine), describe and detail how many potential customers you have spoken with and what feedback they have given you. What changes have you made as a result of that interaction? What have you learned so far? The potential customer group can include the feedback you got from the MBA cohort but should include more than just that group.

Part B) Business Plan: The Executive Summary

Traditionally, this should be done last, not first. Remember, the goal of the Executive Summary is to get the investor to look at the business plan and the goal of the business plan is to get the investor to talk to you. Short, attractive presentation, good writing are critical here. Obviously, when you build the final plan, put this back at the front.

Part C) Business Plan: Production

The critical issue here is how you intend to produce your product or service. Focus on keeping capital expenditures low to minimize the start-up risk. Second, try to describe if and by how much costs will fall as volume increases. Do these costs savings provide a barrier to entry?

Create a 3-page section on how you will produce your product or service. Estimate what it will cost. It is better to out-source in the early stages, so you may wish to go to a firm and get actual estimates.

Although not required for this submission, the final project will need cash flow, income statements and balance sheet projections for 5 years, so be sure to put in as much detail during this stage as possible.

Part D) Business Plan: Marketing

Nothing happens until you have sales. Can you identify your customers; do they have money to purchase; what do they have to change to purchase your product or service; do you have a way to reach them; how will you get your product to them?

Now your team will develop a 3 page section on marketing, distribution, pricing and market share.

How will you introduce, market and distribute your product or service? How do you anticipate pricing your product? How will that compare with your competitors? What market share do you hope to obtain by year 3 and year 5?

Try to build your model based on a concept of growing from the first sale. For example, “The first sale will take X weeks, or we anticipate contacting X customers each month and converting Y into sales.” Do not provide estimates based on “If we only gain 1% market share, we will be as big as X.” Try to justify your answers as much as possible.

In the Oregon State University resource on business writing style, review carefully the table showing differences between academic and business writing styles. Choose a difference that you find surprising and discuss why you find this difference particularly surprising and/or challenging

D3

WRTG 394 is a business writing course. Business writing has certain significant differences in style (approach to how the writer presents the subject matter) and format (arrangement of text on the page, i.e., how the writing looks to the reader) from the type of college writing that students are familiar with, academic writing. Therefore, it is important that you review some resources and make yourself acquainted (and eventually knowledgeable) with both business writing style expectations and with business writing format expectations.

In this WRTG 394 course, you will expected to complete all writing assignments using appropriate business writing style and business writing format.

Both here and in the Week 1 Content area of the WRTG 394 classroom you will find links to resources that will help you understand business writing style and business writing format. You should find the following resource very helpful for becoming acquainted with business style and how it differs from academic style:

Business Writing Style (Oregon State University)

This source gives you some examples of what business writing format looks like:

Business Document Formats (Lumen Learning)https://open.oregonstate.education/businesswriting/chapter/3/

There are two (2) questions for you to consider responding to for this topic. You should only choose one question to respond to for your initial response. Respond to that question in a minimum of 40 words. Then, in your reply to a classmate, try to choose a classmate who responded to the question you did not choose. If that’s not possible, try to choose a classmate who hasn’t gotten a reply from anyone.

Questions/Discussion:

1. In the Oregon State University resource on business writing style, review carefully the table showing differences between academic and business writing styles. Choose a difference that you find surprising (or that you think might be challenging to remember and practice as you are learning business writing) and discuss why you find this difference particularly surprising and/or challenging.

What additional research demands are placed upon the writer for this assignment compared to WA #2? How can you as writer best present your report so that it is most readily accessible for your primary audience?

D2

Use these sample papers to help you answer the following questions:

1. Examine the Research Proposal Memo (WA#1) instructions. What permission must you request? To whom should your memo be addressed? What information about your research must you provide?

2. Examine the Synthesis Lit Review (WA#2) instructions. This assignment calls for the student writer to use scholarly (academic) and professional (trade) sources. Explain what you understand a scholarly source and a professional/trade source to be. You should consider offering an example of each type of source.

3. Take a look at the Research Report (WA#3) instructions. What additional research demands are placed upon the writer for this assignment compared to WA #2? How can you as writer best present your report so that it is most readily accessible for your primary audience?

4. Writing on the same topic for WA#2 and WA#3 make the writing of the research report an easier task than it would have been if different topics had been chosen. Comment on how the writing on the same topic for both these assignments can help you as you write your research report.

What do you want your family, friends, and communities to remember? What do you want them to know about you? How can you guarantee that this happens? What DON’T you want to leave behind? What WON’T you saddle the next generation with? What kinds of legacies, both financial and spiritual, do you wish to leave in your wake?

Will

Write a discussion board response of about 200-300 words where you talk about what you want to happen to your stuff when you die.

This isn’t just about writing a will and handing out your slightly-used vehicles to your grand kids. You can write a sort of “will” here if you want, but this is an opportunity to think about what sorts of legacies you want to leave for those you leave behind at the end of your life. What do you want your family, friends, and communities to remember? What do you want them to know about you? How can you guarantee that this happens?

What DON’T you want to leave behind? What WON’T you saddle the next generation with? What kinds of legacies, both financial and spiritual, do you wish to leave in your wake?
