Theory Building and Theory Testing: A Theory at The Individual Level

We are all theorists. That is, we build theories every day. However, a theory that is not tested is a stereotype. Practitioners and researchers of organizational behavior create and apply theories at one of three levels of analysis. That is, practitioners and researchers create and apply theories at the individual level, at the group level and at the organizational level.

Using Appendix A’s Exhibit A1A: A Model Depicting the Scientific Method, and drawing on your personal observations, create a theory that can be used to explain and predict behaviors at the individual level. Fully explain the theory’s constructs, propositions, and boundaries.

Using Appendix A’s Exhibit A2A: A Model of the Empirical Research Process, create a means to test the theory. State the study’s research question(s), hypothesis/hypotheses, research design, and variables used. Tell how the hypothesis/hypotheses would be tested.

How does the use of HR forecasting reflect Honeywell’s strategy and culture? What options did Honeywell use to overcome the projected labor surplus during the recession? Other available options?

Written Case Assignment

Gauging Employment at Honeywell
Case written by Herbert Sherman

Honeywell is a diverse differentiated industrial conglomerate with segments such as transportation systems, performance materials & technologies, aerospace and automation & control solutions yet they are best known by the average consumer for their thermostats. According to the 2013 Fortune 500 list Honeywell ranked 78th position out of all US companies with a revenue of $39 billion. [2]

In 1999, Honeywell merged with AlliedSignal and Pittway but encountered problems when they realized that each company possessed their own unique corporate culture. During the next several years, Honeywell found itself addressing new challenges while trying to absorb its acquisitions. For example, environmental-related business liabilities had never been addressed and now required real attention while managers were disinvesting in research and development because their divisions showed higher profits – new product development ceased. Honeywell also experienced high turnover in upper management having 3 different CEOs in four years. [1]

Honeywell’s main focus in the past decade has been resolving these issues by first implementing their “One Honeywell” culture. This strategy increased overseas sales by 10% while also helping them become more aware and responsive to their environmental responsibilities. Investments in new products and services increased while their turnover rate started to decrease with employees filling more than 85% of the vacancies in top-level positions. Just as Honeywell turned the corner in 2008, the US entered a recession and Honeywell’s orders were being cancelled or postponed. No new orders were being placed and sales were decreasing. As a result, direct costs of production were decreasing because the company simply did not need to purchase raw materials to make new products. [1]
In the manufacturing industry, the cost of people covers more than 30% of the total expenses and most firms responded to the recession by restructuring their workforce by firing thousands of employees. Cutting costs for production was not an option because a loss of customers is a major risk for the company therefore; the only option left was cutting costs through employees. Honeywell knew though that even the worst recessions are not permanent and that they usually last about 12-18 months; they wanted to be prepared when the economy started to heal.

With its new culture in place Honeywell took a different approach than their competitors. They projected the possible impact of economic recovery on their business noting that they would have to rehire many of the employees they would lay off during the recession. Given this projection they then followed a different method of restructuring and let their workers take temporarily unpaid leaves of absences: furloughs. Honeywell also knew that furloughs would harm the morale and the loyalty of its employees. Even the employees who stayed would be distracted, thinking that their own jobs might be at stake. In order to benefit from furloughs, Honeywell limited their use by implementing more diligent performance reviews and avoiding hiring for new positions.

Honeywell CEO David Cote believed that most of his managers still overestimated their savings and underestimated how disruptive layoffs would be given that the average employee received six months’ worth of severance pay – Honeywell could only start saving money 6 months after the firm laid off an employee. However, the value of the employees’ contributions was intangible; they might be losing their most skilled employees. The results for keeping their valuable employees have bounced back quicker than their competitors after the recession and their business was increasing at a higher pace. [1]

  • Questions:

How does the use of HR forecasting reflect Honeywell’s strategy and culture?
What options did Honeywell use to overcome the projected labor surplus during the recession? Other available options?
How might job analysis and job design minimize the impact of furloughs on organizational performance and productivity? How does hoteling fit into this scenario?

How does your company integrate innovation and entrepreneurship into its long-term planning and, based on learnings from class, what would you change about your organization?

Business Presentation

Option 1: Written Exam
These questions will cover major, pertinent business issues covered in the DBA coursework. This is an “open-note exam”, but concepts presented in the questions will not have cut-and-dried answers. They will require critical and thinking and concept integration from all DBA courses.
Once the exams are collected, the DBA faculty will grade the questions based on completeness of theory and thinking from a rubric. Then, a grade will be assigned to each question of:
Pass
Marginal Pass
Fail
If you receive a Pass on a question, nothing more needs to be done. If you receive a Marginal Pass on a question, a faculty member will reach out to you for additional information that may be shared via email. If a question is a Fail, you must completely re-do that question as separate Microsoft Word document.
Grading should be completed before the beginning of Spring Block I.

Option 2: Portfolio Project

The Portfolio Project will be done virtually with the screen sharing of a PowerPoint slide.  In the Portfolio Project, you must look at your industry / research / future occupation through the eyes of all of the non-statistics courses of the DBA Program.  In essence, you need to be able to answer the following questions:

If you receive a Pass by all members of the voting committee, nothing more needs to be done. If you receive a Marginal Pass by a member of the voting committee, the faculty member(s) will reach out to you for additional information that may be shared via email. If you receive a Fail by any member of the committee, you must completely redo your Presentation, with suggested changes.

Prepare an Excel file with two sheets for two models. In addition to the Excel file, you need to send them a 1-page summary letter, where you explain them briefly your approach and recommendation along with appropriate justification.

Understanding And Optimizing Business Systems

There are currently 4 recycling facilities (A, B, C and D) operating in the city of Glasgow. In addition, the Glasgow city council is considering 2 potential locations E and F to locate their recycling facilities. Facilities at these locations can be opened and operated at a cost of £75,000 per facility. This expansion is to support their burgeoning metropolitan city. They have divided their city into 10 zones. Each zone has a collection point where they collect recyclable waste from the residents of that zone. The expected amount of waste material collected in these 10 zones is given in the data file. The estimated recycling cost at a facility for the materials collected from a specific zone (per kg) is also provided in the file. This variation occurs because the recycling cost incorporates various components such as transportation cost, wages, grades of the recycling materials collected, etc. In addition, there is a restriction on how many kilograms of waste material that can be processed by a particular facility. The waste material that cannot be recycled has to be disposed at a cost of £16.25/kg.
They are currently considering the following two options:

a. Do not open any new facilities and use only current facilities.

b. Open facilities in E and F in addition to current facilities.

The management would like to hire you for your consulting services as an Operational Research Analyst to advise them on which option they should take forward and why. You need to prepare an Excel file with two sheets for two models. In addition to the Excel file, you need to send them a 1page summary letter, where you explain them briefly your approach and recommendation along with appropriate justification. (Note: The administrators have business degrees and are therefore not familiar with technical terms, so your letter should not involve any technical terms.)

(Each model is worth 25 marks and the summary letter is worth 50 marks)

Explain the current, or ‘AS-IS,’ state process and illustrate it with a UML Activity Diagram with partitions, a.k.a Swimlane diagram that the customer leverages that could be improved with the use of technologies.

Individual Project 2 ISM

Directions
For this project you will work to propose a M-Commerce solution to solve a particular business problem. You will research, analyze, define, and propose a technology-based business solution. You can use an existing or fictitious organization. The end product will be both a paper and a presentation that describes the problem and the business solution.
NOTE: This project are due at the end of Module 6. Be sure to plan your work accordingly.
The project should minimally contain the following sections (at least 7 full pages in APA format):

Business and Market Overview—your client’s organization, management, business model, their products and services, and their growth strategy. Elaborate on the distinct external pressures on their business. This section must include an illustration of Porter’s Model with the unique and specific pressures that your client faces.

Problem Definition—Identify the core business problem that your client has engaged your team to solve. For that problem, identify the overarching business process. Explain the current, or ‘AS-IS,’ state process and illustrate it with a UML Activity Diagram with partitions, a.k.a Swimlane diagram that the customer leverages that could be improved with the use of technologies. Refer to your text for a sample Swimlane diagram.

Business Solution Proposal—taking the ‘AS-IS’ model from section 2, elaborate on how technology will be utilized to streamline or optimize the current process in order to solve the stated business problem. Explain the future, or ‘TO-BE’, state process and illustrate it with a UML Activity Diagram. Be sure to include any key technology in its own Swimlane. Also, elaborate on any new, updated, enhanced IT Infrastructure (hardware, databases, networks, business intelligence, RFID, sensor networks, and/or software) required to support the solution. The line items that come out of this section should be part of the investment cost details in Section 4.

Solution Assessment—Leverage the output from the previous three sections and quantify the value of the business solution. Identify and estimate the cost of key technology, training, people, resources required for the business solution, i.e. the investment. Next, identify and estimate the value of the solution in specific financial gains or costs savings, i.e. financial gain. Illustrate the ROI by using IT ROI and Related Financial Metrics (Links to an external site.) and Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator (Links to an external site.). If you aren’t sure about real costs, be sure to mark it as an assumption, i.e. best guess.

Project Management—identify potential project management and SDLC (system development life cycle) challenges and elaborate on mitigation strategies for each in order to ensure that the rollout of the business solution goes smoothly. Include a high-level project plan with key activities for each main phase of the project.
Citations that document your research are a critical part of this project. Be sure to identify all the references you use. These should be cited in the text as well as the References list.
