Apply Porter’s 5-Forces industry analysis framework to a real industry and provide an analysis of at least two interesting forces (from the 5-Forces framework) in that industry.

Reaction Assignment: External (Industry) Analysis
For this week’s topic on External (Industry) Analysis, apply Porter’s 5-Forces industry analysis framework to a real industry and provide an analysis of at least two interesting forces (from the 5-Forces framework) in that industry. Provide your opinion on whether this industry is attractive (profitable) or not, and how that is likely to change in the future (based on changes in the broader environment of the industry).
Reaction and Interaction General Instructions
An important aspect of learning strategic management is the application of concepts and frameworks to real-world situations, including your own company and familiar industry contexts. Online education also provides access to a variety of other professionals and an opportunity to learn from them. Therefore. this assignment asks you to reflect on and apply strategy concepts and tools in a discussion board post (reaction). and then to engage in conversation by responding to your classmates on their posts (interaction). In order to undertake this assignment. you may choose a real-world context or example (company, industry, etc.) already familiar to you such as your current or former employer, or pick an example or context from the news. What is critical is that you apply what you learn in the course to this context or example … think of yourself as an expert being called on to discuss your expert view on the real-world example you picked. After you have posted your “reaction”, also respond to two other classmates’ reactions in your “interaction”.
Requirements (Reaction)
1. Make sure you actually CONNECT the example/context with the strategy framework and tools you are applying (from this week). And then try to say something interesting or insightful about what’s going on (you have leeway here to be creative and take intellectual risks). Please make sure you have responded adequately to the discussion prompt provided.

2. Please ensure that the links you provide relate to the company/organization (and the specific issue within it) that you are discussing. You need to provide a link even if you are discussing your own company/organization. If you do not have such a link. please find a different example/company for your assignment.

3. We want you to learn through this exercise. To this end, do not pick an example or context that has already been discussed in that module’s lecture video. Ride hailing services, food delivery, and video streaming are off limits, for example, in week

1. Similarly. airlines. pharmaceuticals and cafes / restaurants are off limits for week 2: and so on. Essentially avoid an example that plagiarizes an application of the weeks framework illustrated by the instructor (in the lecture video or live session). At first, you may experience some ambiguity about this requirement. but it’s quite easy to find an example that is In the clear” … just use good judgment: as a manager you’ll need to do that all the time.

4. At the bottom of your reaction post. please include links (a minimum of one) to your source material(s). You must ensure that this link is accessible (not broken, not behind a pay wall) so that your classmates and our graders can access it.

5. Ensure that your write-up is in the 400-500 word range. The target should be around 450 words … don’t try to meet the bare minimum. as word counts can vary depending on the software used. Make sure the write-up does not include quotes that go beyond 5-6 words … the reaction should be essentially in your own words. Quotes are understood to be from your uploaded article: so no citation is needed.

6. Use professional language throughout. and make sure you write the ‘reaction- well. with clear organized sentences. Think of it like a professional note/blog or email.

7. You have to post your reaction post before you can see your peers’ reaction post.

8. If you are unsatisfied with your reaction post. please post your new reaction post by replying to your original reaction post.

9. The last reaction post attempt will be graded. and the first two interaction post attempts that exceed the word limit will be graded.

Why a firm must measure productivity?

Respond to classmate repsonse on question: Why a firm must measure productivity? Find a specific business and discuss the productivity measures and importance of productivity measurement in evaluating operations performance. Indicate the output/input measures of productive efficiency.

Classmate Response:

All businesses require measurable indicators to calculate productivity rates influenced by marketing strategies to create profits and mitigate loss. It doesn’t matter if the company is in the manufacturing, retail, or service industry because all businesses operate for profit. To operate profitably, an enterprise must adopt the formula that profits equal outputs greater than inputs. There are strategies developed to interpret economic performance markers—otherwise known as productivity measures. And, these measure business efficiency and overall profitability (“Canada,” 2006).

There are various types of productivity measures (“Canada,” 2006)

Single-factor productivity (SFP) measures output quantity, such as the number of manufactured units.
Labor productivity (LP)which measure output rate to labor input. E.g., total hours worked to product output.
Multifactor productivity (MFP) combines inputs like capital, labor, and materials used to produce output.
Total factor productivity (TFP) measures the total productivity output calculated against the total average productivity inputs. E.g., The average work hours, quantity of material and overhead cost to produce a measured output.

Delta Airlines is one of the world’s top three airlines by revenue passenger miles (Gay, n.d.). Delta calculates the minimum number of seats (service capacity level) per flight hour needed to profit. The calculations need to overcome landing and gate fees, jet fuel, leasing, aircraft maintenance, and labor cost while remaining competitive (Gay, n.d.) Because of its myriad of varying factors, Delta must use computers to develop matrix algorithms to calculate profitability using various productivity measures in a very competitive market. That is extremely critical as the commercial aviation industry remains hamstrung in this economy.

As a matter of routine we check your similarity score on Turnitin & those with a score above 30% may be subject to investigation. More guidance will be given in lectures & tutorials but please speak to your tutor if you have any concerns or questions.

Use Case Maria is a 25-year-old US Army veteran, newly returned to the civilian workforce. She has recently completed a six-year commitment with the Army. During her time in theArmy, she worked in supply management and logistics. She has decided to pursue a degree in Management Systems and Information Technology.Maria has asked you to use your skill with data to help her search for the best school for her. She is willing to relocate anywhere in the continental United States, but she has a few criteria that her ideal schools must satisfy: 1) safety (low crime), 2) urban –Maria wants to live the big city life, and 3) start-ups –the school should be in a metropolitan area that ranks highly in entrepreneurialism (she plans to find an internship at a startup while she studies).Maria would like you to help her narrow down her search to a list of schools that she can investigate more closely before making her decision.Your Task1.Produce a dataset of schools which satisfy all of Maria’s criteria2.Rank them from best to worst according to the same criteria.Maria’s schools must:1.be in an urban/metropolitan area.2.be in a state(drill down for city for an extra challenge) that ranks 70thpercentile or higher on Kauffman’s start-up rankings.3.The 50thpercentileand belowin overall crime.4.offer a 2-year or 4-year degree in Information Technology/Science.You will need to know your cip codes https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/browse.aspx?y=55All the data you need is provided with the exception of the entrepreneurial data, which can be accessed athttp://www.kauffman.org/microsites/kauffman-

1.Read the data dictionaries or codebooks to figure out what the variables mean and which ones you will need to use.

2.Eliminate unneeded columns.

3.Perform any cleaning and standardization needed, be sure to document your process and reasoning.

4.Engineer a summary variable for school crime so that we can compare schools by levels of crime overall.

5.Engineer a method for ranking the schools in consideration of all of Maria’s criteria taken together.Explain your ranking scheme and reasoning.

6.Develop an Excel model which will allow a user to adjust variables to search for possible schools.(i.e. Urban/Metro, Rural), City Ranking using KauffmansStart Up Rankings, Crime rate. Test using Maria’s use case. Model should show rankings starting with the top recommendation. We will assume to simplify the model that all students want to take an IT or CS degree. Essentially this model will allow Maria to tweak the city size, crime rate and kauffmans rankings to create and adjust her list. You can house data in a database (access or SQL Server)if you want but the goalis to build at minimum an interface in Excel. Document your process!7.For submission, you need to write a report explaining your process and highlighting steps 1 –7 as necessary. The purpose of your report is to explain how the excel model you build works, why you built the model with the layout and functionality you did. You will also include your user guide on how to manage and use the excel model. Any research needs to be in APA format and the paper must be written in APA. You will also need to submit your excel model for review and validity testing.
