Individual Artifact Analysis / Paper
AP/HRM 3450, Section A+B, Fall 2020
Task: Individual Artifact Analysis / Paper
Deadline: December 9, 2020 (last day to submit written work for the fall term)
Weighting: 15% of course grade
Purpose and Basics
• The purpose of this paper is to provide you with an opportunity to further your individual
learning through in-depth examination of EDI aspects of a specific situation or example.
• You have flexibility is the way you approach the paper. You may build on your Dialogue Café
materials as a starting point or start fresh with a new idea.
o It is recommended, that you carefully read the expectations, so that your artifact/topic
meets those expectations. You do *not* need to get approval from Dr. Ophir for your
idea for the paper (opportunities for questions will be provided in drop-ins, if you wish
to ask questions).
• Students seeking alternate provisions are expected to follow York University policies and
guidelines regarding accommodation procedures.
Selecting a situation/example
• A situation or example would usually be a recent artifact(s) or description of a lived experience,
preferably from 2020 or late 2019. Many of you have had such in your Dialogue Café
preparation. If you had a very general approach in your Dialogue Café, you may want to look for
a specific artifact to work with.
• An artifact is a primary source in the form of written text, image or video. It can be an ad
(image, commercial, social media post), a company webpage, as well as a blog post or a
newspaper article that describes a person’s lived experience or a point of view.
• It is best that your artifact/situation/example go beyond non-dominant group such as women,
or general such as visible minority or people with disabilities. Consider other social identity
dimensions and intersectionality.
What to include in the analysis/paper
• Critical reflection of artifact, identifying 2-4 main themes/arguments that are the most
important in your view.
o For example, in the Intel Ad we looked at in Module 1, one theme can be labeled as
replication of white supremacy, as depicted in the relative positioning and poses of the
individuals in the picture, the use of identical pictures for the sprinters, and more.
Other themes could be the use of male models only (related in the analysis to the
specific industry), and ableism (how strength and speed are depicted).
o Another example, with the Victorian Hearing Aids we’ve looked at in Module 3, where
one of the themes we discussed was how stigma is portrayed in the ad (applying stigma
characteristics).

• The discussion of the themes/arguments should include analysis of your artifact, where you
apply relevant theoretical concepts from the course (specific concepts, *not* “discrimination
based on X”, whereby X is a non-dominant group).
• In addition, expand on our readings by providing “added value” for your analysis. Identify and
apply concepts or aspects of EDI that were not covered in the assigned course materials.
o Good sources for such are scholarly articles or articles from practitioner-oriented
publications1 on EDI. How many sources? 2-3 such sources would be appropriate.
o Also, you may use any relevant concepts from eBook Chapters 8 (Immigration) and 9
(Multiculturalism), which were listed in the assigned readings but would not be covered.
topics are: Gender, ability, race, Indigenous Peoples

Potential conflicts : two arenas around neonic pesticides and land use or neonic pesticides and renewable energy / biomass production.
1,500 words academics essay
Coursework Specification Guidance
1. Familiarise yourself with the materials around ‘The Business of Bees’ and the arena model. The focus should be on the critical analysis, i.e. make sure you understand why the arena model was used in the paper for stakeholder conflicts, what the model is designed to achieve and how it can address the stakeholder conflict around pesticides and bee decline.
You should look for material published by the different stakeholders that make up the arena.
2. Identify the arena(s) in which the conflict takes place. This includes identifying the stakeholders and their motivations and interests.
You should look for academic, industry or NGO sources that discuss the conflicts as well as the interests and motivations.
3. Identify a company in the agrochemical industry that is involved in the conflict. In the process you should analyse company materials, as well as additional materials targeted at the company written by other stakeholders, e.g. NGOs or investors.
You should look for academic, industry or NGO sources that discuss the role of the agrochemical company of your choosing.
4. Based on the previous steps you should now create conflict arenas from the perspective of your chosen company, that will enable the company to manage its stakeholder conflicts. For your analysis pick two arenas that you determine as most relevant to the company.
You should look into the two papers on your reading list for week 3 – regarding the Ash vs. BAT conflict and the Salmon farming conflict. The arena approach is applied to stakeholder management in these two papers. Use this as the basis for your modelling.
5. Presentation of your case study. You should present your case study in a clear and coherent way. Your case should include an explanation of the issue at hand, a justification of why the company chosen is relevant, an analysis of the company’s stakeholder conflict arenas – focus on the two arenas that you picked in (4).
The first two additional materials linked below are an example of an arena model which should be used as a basis for the essay. The key part of the paper that is relevant for us is the arena model.
In the paper they are using BAT’s accounting information to gain the information in order to be able to create the arenas and track the conflict.

The case assignment should include the following:
Element 010
Task: Coursework 3000 words
You may access the assignment here.
The assessment for this module consists of one element with two questions. You must answer both questions.
In both questions, you must use appropriate case law in order to support your answers.
In particular, the first part comprises an essay question relating to aspects of the English Legal System. The second part will concern a case scenario where the student is required to apply the law to a given problem, manage this information and communicate appropriately and effectively their advice to the parties.
For Question 1 and 2:
Please make sure all cases are given a citation, preferably in the text or, as a minimum, in the list of references /bibliography. For example, ‘Ali v Baba (2015) 1 WLR 239’. The list of references should include a list of the legal cases and legislation mentioned in the answer. The legal cases and legislation are the primary sources of information in a law essay – you do not have to cite the secondary source where they viewed a case. You should only give the legal citation, not the website or book where they accessed details of the case. For example, this is the correct reference for this case – London Borough of Tower Hamlets v Mr J Wooster [2009] All ER (D) 160 – not London Borough of Tower Hamlets v Mr J Wooster, Turner, C (2013) Unlocking Employment Law, 383.
Please make sure all direct and indirect quotations from textbooks, journals or electronic resources are properly referenced (using an ‘in text citation’ or footnote reference in the main body of your answer) and any resources used must be listed in the bibliography.
Do not use abbreviations such as ‘eq’, ‘ie’ or simplify words such as ‘because’ to ‘cos’ or ‘for’ to ‘4’. It is important to observe and use good academic English in answering assignment questions, be it an essay or a problem question.
Please use proper paragraphs and paraphrasing. A paragraph should not consist of one sentence. There are excellent Guides to writing essays at and
As a recommendation, use either ‘Times New Roman’ or ‘Arial’ with a minimum font size of 10, and maximum of 12, with 1.5 spacing.
The answer must not be purely descriptive and efforts must be taken to relate the answer to the question throughout the discussion. However, if you make an assertion you must support it with an academic reference or legal authority.
Do not use bullet points (it is a law essay).
For Question 2: The Problem Scenario
You may wish to follow the ‘IRAC’ formula in forming discussions for the problem question.
‘I’ – IDENTIFY’ the legal issue
‘R’ – Explain the ‘RULES’ (the law – legislation/judicial precedents from legal cases) surrounding the relevant area/ issue
‘A’ – APPLY the RULES – the relevant legal principles – to the issue and APPLY legal cases to support the opinion.
‘C’ give a CONCLUSION to the issue. This formula may be used over and over again in addressing all of the issues relating to each of the parties in the assignment question.
An overall conclusion should be given which summarises the situation and suggestions as to how to deal with/prevent this type of problem occurring in the future.
