Module Overview

Welcome to the module guide for the Management Research Methods module of the Business Management. This module provides an introduction to academic research methods and provides an overview of the quantitative and qualitative methodologies that are needed in order to successfully carry out your dissertation research project.

The module will cover the major research methods – observation, surveys, case studies, interviews and action-based research – the implications of using them as well as the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data and presentation of findings. It identifies how to develop research questions and how to produce a research proposal and research design considering the issues of data validation and reliability.

You can discuss any of the following key topic areas:

  • Behaviours that support equality and diversity in the workplace
  • Managing cultural diversity in the workplace (CHOOSE THIS ONE)
  • Gender equality in leadership and management
  • Workplace discrimination

The tutor will then check the proposal and if approved student can progress and start working on the dissertation or resubmit again to the tutor with the required changes. PLEASE CHOOSE ONE COMPANY FROM THE LIST: TESCO, Morrison, ALDI, LIDL.

Aims and learning outcomes of the module

On completion of this module the student should be able to:

LO1: Generate, evaluate, and select a variety of appropriate research questions in the chosen discipline that will facilitate the development of academic, career and personal aspirations.

LO2: Critically discuss a variety of research designs and methods including primary and/or secondary data and assess the validity and robustness of both quantitative and qualitative research.

LO3: Present and justify a structured and coherent research proposal deploying accurately established techniques in order to enable unpredictable and complex problems to be addressed; the proposal should include considerations of ethical issues especially is the data is collected from human subjects to be in compliance with ethnical best practice.

LO4: To present research parameters in their research project topic relevant to their chosen named pathway

Within your research proposal you should include the following:

  • Have chosen an agreed topic of interest within the discipline of Business and Management.
  • Formulate a design research problem – does your dissertation ask an appropriate question?
  • Establish aims for your dissertation.
  • Prepare an introduction, highlighting the broad background of the subject and an indication of why it is your choice of study.  This should focus a little on your interest in the subject and a description of its contemporary nature.
  • Prepare an overview of the subjects you consider will be relevant for your literature review.  This should take the form of one or two paragraphs highlighting the key theories, models, best practice, journal/research articles, latest thinking, academic subjects etc.
  • Prepare an overview of your methodology, considering the method and process you are going to use to collect your primary and secondary research.  Highlight what primary and secondary research you will require, where you can find it and how easy you believe it will be.  When considering primary research, highlight who you will be contacting and the methods you have considered to achieve this, i.e. interview, questionnaire, meetings, focus groups etc.  Give a little theory of what this process will take and what its benefits are over other methods.  Highlight what form the collected data will take, i.e. quantitative or qualitative data, and why you have designed your research in this way.  How reliable is the data, can you think of any statistical methods you could use to analyse it?
  • Consider the limitations to your methodology, for example, what are your time constraints, can you ensure people will respond to your primary research, what resources do you require?
  • Prepare a comprehensive list of reference materials you consider will be useful to your dissertation.  Use books, journal articles, legal proceedings, conference reports, official data, web references, union publications, documents from support bodies such as National Training Organisations, Local Government etc.

You will develop risk and cost-benefit analyses which you will submit to your assessor for approval.

Assessment Requirements
1. Read the case study ‘A. C. Gilbert’ (Appendix 1). Assume no improvements have been made and the company is still operating in the same way today as when it closed in 1967.

2. Consider the following scenario:

Your manager, as per organisational processes for continuous improvement, has asked you to develop a performance improvement strategy.

3. Develop a one page performance improvement strategy related to competitiveness. Include:

d. discuss issues or potential problems during trailing

e. if and when applicable, accept failure of ideas and recognise successful ideas.

5. Develop a risk analysis for the improvement strategy.

6. Develop a cost-benefit analysis for the improvement strategy.

7. Submit documents to your assessor. Ensure you keep a copy of all work submitted for your records.

What should the strategy be so that the company is best positioned under each decision alternative?

Strategic Management Scenario: Assume you are the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a company that manufactures and sells packaged snack foods (chips, candies, nuts) in the U.S. (which is your home or domestic market). As part of your firm’s growth strategy you are considering expanding in one or more foreign countries, markets, or regions across the globe. As CEO you have decided that you will begin by considering expansion into Brazil and Japan. When deciding to expand, two major issues that you face is choosing an international strategy and the mode of entry that your company will use to compete across each international market.
Pre Report Analysis
1) Using cross discipline knowledge you have gained from prior courses, analyze the global packaged snack foods (chips, candies, nuts) industry and describe what is required to successfully compete in this industry. This should be about 1-2 pages.
2) Discuss relevant components of the international business environment for each country (trade restrictions such as tariffs, cost of labor, energy costs, etc.) and (b) the impact, if any, of cross cultural differences on the choice of the international strategy to use (ex. cultural preferences for the product itself or domestic vs. import product). This should be about 2-3 pages.
The Pre Report Analysis should be included as an appendix in the back of the report and thus will be submitted at the same time as your report.
Report
In a well-written, typed, 5-7 page, double spaced essay carefully address the questions below. Keep in mind the non bolded question are general Gen Ed questions for university curriculum assessment. The bolded question are specific to the scenario for this project and that is what you should address and answer. In other words, by answering the bold questions you are answering the more general question but with more specificity relative to the given scenario. So you only need to address the bolded questions.
1) What do you see as plausible decision alternatives to the business scenario you have been provided? Describe at least three alternatives; each should be discussed in detail and address different stakeholder perspectives.

Specifically, in each market in the scenario, what strategies (if any) are plausible? How would these alternatives impact stockholders, employees, and suppliers?

2) What would be the implications of each decision alternative? Describe any ethical implications associated with each of the decision alternatives.

Explain the implications of your international strategy and mode of entry choices on local and global communities. Specifically, what impact does it have on the company and home market as well local employment, local tax revenues, and the natural environment?
3) What should the strategy be so that the company is best positioned under each decision alternative?

Which decision alternative(s) do you recommend and why? Make sure you fully describe your choice of international strategy and mode of entry and explain why they are the optimal solution.

4) As implications of your recommended decision, what are the actions needed in the next year for each function in the company: Marketing, Finance, Human Resource, Technology, Operations, etc.?

Describe the impact of your choice of international strategy and mode of entry on how various functional area strategies should be performed. For example, would operations need to expand aboard? Would marketing strategies need to be adjusted for the new country?

What procedures will be used for monitoring overall business performance?

This is step 3 of completing your Business Plan. Remember 2-3 paragraphs each section.

Financial Plan

A. Financial Projections
How will you fund the business?
What are your desired debt and equity position?
Who will provide capital debt funds?
What role will leasing play in your financial strategy?
Will you use outside investors for equity capital?
How will you manage the financial risks your business faces?
What operating procedures, such as developing cash flow budgets or spending limits, will you have to ensure adequate money for debt repayment?
What are the important assumptions that underlie your projections? These assumptions may be associated with both external or internal factors.
What financial aspects of your business (equity, asset growth, ROA, ROE, etc.) will you monitor?
What procedures will be used for monitoring overall business performance?
What level of performance will your business shoot for? These should be targets for next year and in five years. They should be financial performance standards used to monitor the overall business.

What yield and output levels could you attain? What efficiency levels will you reach?

B. Contingency Plan
What will you do if you can’t follow through with your primary plan?
How are you preparing for an emergency in your business?
How will the business function if something happens to one of the key members of the management team?

Executive Summary

This section is a summary of the information from the pages that follow. Prepare it last, after the business plan has been written. It should not exceed two pages. Headings to use in the Executive Summary:
A. Vision/Mission Statement
B. Company Summary
C. Products/Services
D. Market Assessment
E. Strategic Implementation
F. Expected Outcomes

This is to complete the last part of the Cucciolo business plan you completed in the past few weeks. Great job!
