Describe the setting, the persons involved, what was said or not said and analyze what you think caused the miscommunication.

2 pages and each question half page, no question title needed.

In this week’s lecture we discussed the communication process. The communication process is a dynamic two-way exchange of information requiring both parties to seek meaning, sending and receiving, providing ongoing feedback through various channels while paying attention to the barriers to communication in the form of noise. When communication is clearly sent and received working and personal relationships are able to function at optimal levels. When communication breaks down, for a variety of different reasons, the door to conflict opens wide.

Noise gets in the way of clarity. As discussed, noise comes in many forms, both obvious and subtle. In the communication process, we need to pay attention to noise and seek ways to reduce, minimize or eliminate it if we want to improve the communication process.

For your initial post, find and share a communication example that produced less than desirable outcomes, i.e. a bad example of communication. This example can be personal or sourced from the media, TV or the internet.

  1.  Describe the setting, the persons involved, what was said or not said and analyze what you think caused the miscommunication.
  2.  What examples of noise can you identify in this example? Explain.
  3.  What would you recommend to the persons involved to get a different, positive result?
  4. From this example and this week’s lecture, how might you approach communicating differently in the future?

Find two arguments on the issue of immigration policy in America, one supporting tighter restrictions on undocumented immigrants, the other opposing them.

Communication class, logic and argumentation

Deductive Argument Paper

Find two arguments on the issue of immigration policy in America, one supporting tighter restrictions on undocumented immigrants, the other opposing them.

The sources, which should be identified in your work, may be blogs or articles from a website, a newspaper, or a magazine.

First, reconstruct the arguments as deductive, and then discuss whether they are sound. The simpler the argument, the easier it is to determine whether it is sound.

Papers must be between 700 – 800 words (thus 350-350 per article).

Notes:

  • You are looking for opinion pieces. Try searching for “editorials on immigration.”
  • Reconstruct the arguments in the paper. Specifically recognize the premises and conclusion(s)
  • Be sure that you are clear on what a deductive argument is.
  • Discuss the soundness of the argument. This will require use of the text to back your thoughts.

Explain which were a product of enculturation and which were a product of inculturation?

Respond to the following questions

Unscramble the following statements to create a logical outline for an upcoming business presentation.

This week, you will have an opportunity to work in a team and to put into practice many of the communication strategies about which we are learning. Your instructor has already assigned you to a group of team members. You need to solve a communication business problem outline together by the end of the week. Remember, what makes a group a team is a shared common goal, and this team will be no exception. In this case, your shared goal is to create and deliver an A+ solution to a communication business outline.

The following is a list of ideas that were brainstormed in a meeting with your company employees. The company needs to include all these ideas in an all-company presentation, but the list is very disorganized right now. What would be the best way to sort these ideas into some sequence of main points with sub points?

Hints

There are 3 main points, and the rest are sub points.
There is no introduction or conclusion.

Identify a problem in the representation of a particular group in media (related to gender for paper 2, and race for paper 3) and describe what you think would be a more positive or healthy portrayal

This semester, you will write two papers in which you identify a problem in the representation of a particular group in media (related to gender for paper 2, and race for paper 3) and describe what you think would be a more positive or healthy portrayal. For example, you might identify a TV show that reinforces stereotypes about women as unintelligent and passive, and describe how the show could be revised to challenge this stereotype.

This paper involves a five step process: 1) identification of the cultural artifact; 2) discussion of applied concepts; 3) critique of ideologies; 4) de/reconstruction of the popular cultural artifact so that ideologies in original popular cultural artifact are subverted; and 5) interpretation of and reasoning behind reconstruction.

Template for Media Literacy Paper 1 (gender):

  • Identify the artifact
    1. What type of media is it? (Book, TV show, etc)
    2. Genre?
    3. Premise? Basic “thing” the show is about?
  • Applied concepts
    1. What is gender?
    2. Other concepts from the course that are relevant to part 3 of your paper: define them (For example: objectification, hegemonic masculinity, “superwoman ideal,” etc)
    3. Remember: use in-text APA citations for the readings, as well as a reference list at the end of the paper.
    4. You MUST cite at least one paper from this course (for example, the “Doing Gender” piece may be useful for you). You can cite papers from outside of this course as well. Your citation must be relevant to your argument.
  • Critique of the ideologies
    1. One paragraph per claim you make
    2. Topic sentence: something like “Star Trek portrays many of the female characters as sex objects.”
    3. Evidence: “Seven of Nine wears a tight-fitting catsuit.”
    4. Reasoning: “This outfit was designed specifically to emphasize her body shape as much as possible. In fact, it was so tight that the actress, Jeri Ryan, fainted during filming [APA STYLE CITATION HERE]. Further, there is no practical explanation for why she would wear this costume instead of a Star Fleet uniform or more loose-fitting clothing. In this way, the show presents Seven of Nine in a way that focuses on her sex appeal, in a way that is decontextualized from anything her personality or job duties.”
    5. Additional evidence to support the claim (can be in new paragraph if needed): “Similarly, Deana Troi’s costumes were designed to emphasize her beauty and body shape.”
    6. Reasoning for the evidence you described in “e”
  • De/reconstruction:
    1. What changes do you propose? Be as specific as possible. Explain exactly what changes you would make, so there’s no ambiguity, confusion, or unanswered questions
    2. Remember: your changes should reverse the ideology being described above. So, I might describe how I would have Seven of Nine dress instead and whatever other changes I would propose to avoid portraying Trek characters as sex objects
  • Interpretation / reasoning:
    1. How does this subvert the original ideology?
    2. What is the new message that you are sending?

APA format is required

Do not use informal language (slang, vulgar language)

Do not use contractions (don’t, can’t, etc)

Do not quote. Instead, put it in your own words

Do not refer to yourself in this paper. No “In my opinion” or “I think”

Grading:

Grading scheme:

A: You define your terms in a way that really shows you understand them. You make claims about the ideology that are well-supported with evidence, and you lay out your reasoning very clearly and explicitly. Your writing is very specific and is detailed enough that I can tell you know what you’re talking about. There are no unanswered questions or unclear terms, and everything makes sense.

B: You make claims that are clearly supported by evidence and describe how you would subvert the original message in a way that is clear and specific. However, there may be some gaps in your reasoning, or your description of the ideology may be superficial (“The show sends the message that women are less than” when it would be more specific to say “The show sends the message that women belong in domestic spaces but not the workplace.”) Writing conventions may be weaker than in the A range.

C: Similar to B range, but one of the sections is excessively brief or vague, and some of your terms may go undefined.

D: If you do not follow directions or if your paper does not meet the standard for C work, you will be given the opportunity to redo it for up to a C.
