Brands and the usage of Social Media Right

Introduction
Read “How Brands Using Social Media Ignite Marketing and Drive Growth” and “5 Brands That Got Social Media Right in 2015” to prepare for this discussion. As you read through these articles, really focus in on how the authors are rating and defining social media usage. It’s one thing to talk about a successful social media campaign, while it’s completely another to actually try to categorize, analyze, and articulate what makes it successful. These ideas will also be useful for you when you move on to our case studies in the next discussion. This activity aligns with Module Outcome 1.

Questions
• Based on your own reading of the two articles, your exposure to social media, and awareness of marketing in general, what, in your mind, are the two most important findings here? (Keep in mind that we will use these ideas moving forward.) In your opinion, what are the two most important strategies that organizations can employ to “ignite marketing” and get “social media right”? Why these in particular?

• We talked a bit about “emotional attachment” in our module notes. As you look through the examples of marketing campaigns in “5 Brands That Got Social Media Right in 2015,” which most resonates with you? Analyze the message – why do you think this is? What makes you connect with it?

In what ways has this shift been innovative, at both the personal and professional level? From your own experience and viewpoint, how has it innovated communication? What strategies do you see individuals and organizations employing?

The Social Media Revolution

• The short video we watched, “The Social Media Revolution,” tells us at the 3:48 minute mark that social media “isn’t a fad. It’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.” In what ways has this shift been innovative, at both the personal and professional level? From your own experience and viewpoint, how has it innovated communication? What strategies do you see individuals and organizations employing?

• After reading “Integrating Social Media into the Workplace,” begin to look at things from a management perspective. What, in your mind, are some of the deeper implications of the introduction of social media into the workplace? How does this innovation stand to both strengthen and problematize the work environment

Online collaboration and innovation

In Brief you are asked to write an essay in response to the question:
Q: What facilitates effective online collaboration and innovation? You should illustrate your answer with discussion of at least two of the nine examples from Module 2. You should also use one or more of the theories of online collaboration and innovation covered in Module 1.

In Detail
This question brings together the theories explored in the unit so far with the research we have conducted together in Module 2. There are many thesis statements you could formulate to answer the question well. For instance, you may focus on technical features and design, social structures and conditions that effect participation, or theories of motivation. You should approach this essay like a research project: select your case studies/examples to research further, take notes, plan your argument, and refine your thesis statement in response to the research as you start to draft your essay. You should make good use of some of the research material collected for Assignment 1, the required readings from Module 1, and carefully construct an argument drawing on these resources.

Present a clear and coherent argument in response to the question;
Engage the reader and effectively communicate;
Engage critically and meaningfully with relevant unit required readings;
Select and engage with relevant further references from your own research;
Follow conventions of referencing (APA), grammar and expression appropriate for an academic writing.

Identify the key arguments/relevant concepts in the videos and the readings. Summarize what the authors meant, or at least what you think the authors meant, and try to see the world with that theoretical lense.

Encoding and Decoding

Write a response to Stuart Hall’s essay “The television Discourse: Encoding and Decoding” and Linda Steiner’s (1988) essay “ Oppositional Decoding as an Act of Resistance.” You should also refer to the three short videos assigned for this week. Pay particular attention to each author’s discussion of various forms of decoding. The essay is in additional materials, and the three videos are below!

As always, the paper should reflect a critical reading of the texts and your reaction. Think of the paper as having two parts:

1) Make sure to identify the key arguments/relevant concepts in the videos and the readings. Summarize what the authors meant, or at least what you think the authors meant, and try to see the world with that theoretical lense.

2) Critique the theory (encoding and decoding) from an outside perspective, finding its strengths but also its flaws. Use proper APA in-text citations and include reference page at the end.

Ideology

You should write a response to Althusser’s (1970) and Brummett (2013). You may find Althusser a bit challenging. Be sure to focus on his discussion of Ideological State Apparatuses and especially of the media as ISA. The Brummett article is more accessible but do not be tempted to focus primarily on this reading since this is an application of the theory of ideology, not the theory itself.
