Write a 3-4 page paper analyzing the different roles in the group, and how different roles serve different functions in a group.

Select a group to observe (HOA meeting, board meeting, team work meeting, Boy Scout Meeting, small group Bible Study). Watch as an official observer of the roles of the people in the group, and how these differences serve different group functions.

Write a 3-4 page paper analyzing the different roles in the group, and how different roles serve different functions in a group. Use the questions below to guide your analysis:

• What specific task roles (e.g., initiator-contributor, information-giver, clarifier-elaborator, devil’s advocate) were observed (see Rothwell, chapter 5, under “Types of Roles”)? What specific verbal and nonverbal behaviors were observed by group members serving task roles? Describe how group members serving task roles contribute to the overall group functioning?

• What specific maintenance roles (e.g., supporter-encourager; harmonizer-tension reliever) were observed (see Rothwell, chapter 5, under “Types of Roles”)? What specific verbal and nonverbal behaviors were observed by group members serving maintenance roles? Describe how group members serving maintenance roles contribute to the overall group functioning?

• What specific, if any, disruptive roles (e.g., stagehog, clown, blocker) were observed (see Rothwell, chapter 5, under “Types of Roles”)? What specific verbal and nonverbal behaviors were observed by group members serving disruptive roles? Describe how group members serving disruptive roles impacted group functioning?

Explain the conspiracy theory that you are going to present. What does it maintain? What groups are attracted to this conspiracy?

Slide One: Title, Heading with your name, class and date

Slides Two-: What is a conspiracy theory? Make sure you clearly explain it to the audience. Quote from the Brooks or Jimenez article in this slide.

Slide Three through Five: Explain the conspiracy theory that you are going to present. What does it maintain? What groups are attracted to this conspiracy? How did convergence lead this conspiracy theory to more mainstream audiences?

Slide Six: What are some clear “red flags” about this conspiracy theory? In other words, how could someone tell that this information about the conspiracy theory was totally unreliable?

Slide Seven: Find an article or reliable link that debunks this theory. (Scientific evidence, medical studies, etc.) and embed the link into this slide. What do fact checking sites say about this conspiracy theory? See the sources listed below.

Slides Eight through Ten: Explain who benefits from the advancement of this conspiracy theory? In other words, are there corporate interests that benefit from this conspiracy theory? Political benefits from circulating this theory?

Slide Eleven: Have people of note pushed this theory into the public forum? In other words, prominent politicians, celebrities, etc.

Slide Twelve: How close were you to believing this theory? What makes you skeptical of the theory? What did you learn about conspiracy theories from doing this project?

How are women represented in the video, or how is masculinity constructed in the video? What about social class? Ethnicity/race? Sexual orientation?

Theory Paper/Music Video: Select a visually dynamic music video that you like or want to critique

(perhaps this is a video you view as particularly creative, innovative, or conversely, one you really dislike or do not “get.”). In a 3½ to 4-page essay analyze the video using one of the theories we have or will cover in class. This is your opportunity to “read” the video from an academic perspective. Here are some basic ideas you can start with (You do NOT have to use them all. It is only a 4-page paper.): Does a person or figure in the video mean something to you that you want others to see? What aesthetics/colors are used and why do you think they are used? What do they mean? How does the video compare to the lyrics? How are women represented in the video, or how is masculinity constructed in the video? What about social class? Ethnicity/race?How are women represented in the video, or how is masculinity constructed in the video? What about social class? Ethnicity/race? Sexual orientation??

The paper will need the following format APA.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE:
Introduction
What video

“This essay examines the video Side Effects by pop duo The Chainsmokers. Specifically, it analyzes the representation of stereotypical romantic tensions after a break up.”

Why important (or, why should we care?) – Here, focus on the general topic.

“The band’s success and its hegemonic framing of the topic make it worthy of study. The essay examines the video vis-à-vis representations of a young woman presumably dealing with a romantic breakup and how those images, together with the song lyrics address the physical aspects of romantic absence.

What theory

“Building on Gerber and Gross’s (1976) concept of cultivation theory, the idea that (explain theory in a few words here, I will argue that . . .)”

Research Questions

List two research questions: “In the following essay, I will examine how representations of a young female hotel employee are used to represent romantic separation, as well as what they suggest about . . . The essay will then ask what perspectives these elements potentially cultivate in viewers.”

Video Description

Describe the video (and song lyrics if you want-just a couple of sentences. The reader can look up the lyrics online).

Side Effects depicts a young hotel worker, portrayed by Camila Mendes of Riverdale fame, who is forced to work for an entire weekend. Throughout the video, Mendes’ character dances near the hotel pool and viewers see what some hotel guests are doing. In the first scene, . . . Second, blah, blah, blah

. . . Third, the video . . . The lyrics (elaborate on the lyrics without writing them down; use a small quote or two only if you must).”

Important: Do NOT explain anything here. In APA, you first describe what you

are analyzing in the Findings Section and then explain what it means in the

following or Analysis section.

Theoretical Analysis

What does the video mean when you analyze it via the theory you selected. Answers to your research answers belong here and will be driven by the theory used. For example, cultivation analysis may suggest XYZ but standpoint theory will suggest ABC (something different). Stick to ONLY ONE THEORY The paper is simply too short for you to use more than one theory.

Provide some comments for the following essay.

The Worst Fandoms (https://www.wired.com/story/10-most-toxic-fandoms/)

This article ranks various fan groups for being the worst fanbase. Although they preface the article stating that a fandom is a “pure and precious thing” and one should not feel ashamed for being in the fandom they are in, they start off the article by generalizing fans as peevish, while also using words with negative connotations such as obsessive, petty, entitled, conspiratorial, and even abusive. So although they start the article using these words to generalize fans as weird and rude, they immediately try and take it back by saying it is okay to like what you like and this only applies to some people in the group, so then why make these generalizations in the first place? As a hook for readers to read the article? This insinuation still can reinforce the idea of fans as being abnormal even if you decide to take it back as it is already there, laid out for people, and is the first thing they read from the article. This article does point out valid arguments and criticisms to how fandoms can become toxic or participate in bad behavior that should not be tolerated.

How does the ripple effect and synergy show the interconnectedness of group members?

Use chapter 1 & 2 (attached) as the sources/references: Rothwell , J. D. (2019). In mixed company: Communicating in small groups and teams (10th ed.)

The purpose of small group communication theory is to explain and predict small group phenomena. This assignment requires you to analyze a group in terms of systems theory so that you may more clearly understand how the theory explains everyday communication.
Consider the following Small Group Communication situations:
• An engineering research and development team for an automobile manufacturer
• A jury
• A group of students working on a class project
• A family making a decision
Select a small group to analyze. This group should be one in which you either are currently or have been a participant (e.g., bible study group, work group, student project group, family decision-making group). Analyze the group in terms of systems theory. Below are some questions to consider in writing your analyses, keeping in mind that you do not need to address all of them. Please note that this assignment is to be written in an essay not a question-answer format, with a well-developed introduction and conclusion.
• What are some examples of input, throughput, and output?
• How does the ripple effect and synergy show the interconnectedness of group members?
• How does the group manage stability and change?
• How does the group establish and maintain its boundaries.
• What conclusions about group effectiveness can you derive from your analyses?
• Be sure to support your analyses with specific evidence from the group (e.g., remarks made by group members, decisions by the group, behaviors observed), text (e.g., to define systems theory concepts), and Scripture.
