Watch 2 different news sources on the same day. Give detailed examples from the stories, utilizing concepts we discussed in class to help specify the types of bias you find in these news sources.

Media Bias News

1:Watch 2 different news sources on the same day.

2:Look for the differences in coverage and how they might reflect their biases regarding the subject matter and stories.
It will work best if you choose two sources that are known for their differences in approach (e.g., MSNBC & Fox News).
It might also help to watch news sources that are known for expressing views that are radically different from your own; it’s always easier to spot bias in others.

3:Give detailed examples from the stories, utilizing concepts we discussed in class to help specify the types of bias you find in these news sources
As this is a thought experiment or opinion paper, you will not need to conduct outside research aside from watching the two news programs.

Consider which parts of the text stand out to you. What do you agree/disagree with? What might these findings imply about how our society functions?

COM220- Annotation #4

Then scroll to the bottom of the page, where you will see two annotations listed (Sharabi and Petronio). You will only need to complete one of them (either Sharabi article or Petronio article). If you click on one of the articles, it will come up automatically and that is where you will enter your annotations. Write at least four substantial sentences (annotation) regarding a paragraph or sentence from the article.

Add an annotation to only one article: Sharabi or Petronio et al.. You may include up to three annotations (required: one). Your annotations should reflect critical thinking, connections between readings, and knowledge of the course content. Use this as an opportunity to engage directly with the text and your peers. Consider which parts of the text stand out to you. What do you agree/disagree with? What might these findings imply about how our society functions?

Describe the theory you are reviewing: Try to begin with a sentence that identifies the general focus of the theory. Analyze and expand on your points from the first section.

COM 220 Extra Credit: 1-page Summary and Expansion Paper

10 points

The goal of this extra credit assignment (Summary and Expansion paper) is to summarize and provide insight into a theory described in the chapter.

GUIDELINES

  • Your response should be no more than 1 single-spaced typed page (12 point, Times New Roman font, normal margins and type).

 Section #1:  Summarize

In section 1, you should describe the theory you are reviewing:  Try to begin with a sentence that identifies the general focus of the theory. For example, define the issue being addressed or the theorist’s general perspective. The remainder of the first paragraph should identify the theory’s major points or arguments. For example, identify the claims the theory is making or the assumptions being advanced. As an alternative, you might identify the primary variables or “things” that a theorist examines, and summarize the relationship between those variables, according to the theory.

This first section is descriptive in nature. In other words, provide enough information to present the basic framework of the theory and all its important parts; you should not evaluate the theory in this section.

 Section #2: Expand

In Section 2, you will analyze and expand on your points from the first section. You may draw connections to another theory in the lesson, identify weaknesses or strengths of the theory (think which contexts the theory’s claims do not apply), or consider practical applications of the theory. You could apply the theory to social or political events that have occurred. Please expand your points in at least two ways. This section gives you creativity in how you want to approach it. I am most interested to see that you have critically examined the theory and demonstrated your knowledge of it.

Evaluation:

  1. Accurate and comprehensive summary of main points
  2. Insights into the theory (shows original thought)
  3. Clear, grammatically correct writing, effective word choice, careful proofreading

Direct quotes from the chapter are not appropriate for this extra credit assignment; your goal is to summarize and paraphrase rather than to extract specific phrases. Do not include direct quotes in your 1-page paper.

You do not need to cite the text or online lesson in your references section.

Do you think the concepts of CPM still apply in the online environment? How do you manage private information in the online context? Can you actually claim ownership of your “private” information online?

COM220- Discussion Post #10: Communication Theories

Uncertainty Reduction Theory

1. Watch the following video clip for Q2a: Devil Wears Prada – Meeting the Boss – YouTube. Which factors (i.e., incentive value, future interaction, deviation) motivate the applicant in the clip to reduce uncertainty? Which information-seeking strategies does the character use to reduce uncertainty? Use terminology from the text and module. ( 2 points)

2. Can you think of a situation in which an individual desires to maintain his/her uncertainty? Explain. (This question is unrelated to the video clip above). ( 2 points)

Communication Privacy Management Theory:

3. Watch the following video clip:

The video clip provides a good example of Communication Privacy Management. What was the private information in the video? How did the characters manage their rules for disclosure and privacy management? How would you explain Michelle’s decision to tell her dad her secret (think about concepts ownership, permeability, and coordination patterns). How do you think the boundary turbulence in the video can be corrected? Use terminology from the text and module. ( 2 points)

4. Do you think the concepts of CPM still apply in the online environment? How do you manage private information in the online context? Can you actually claim ownership of your “private” information online? ( 2 points)

chose a cultural artefact which demonstrates an aspect of intercultural communications, and use the theories and essays we have studied in class to examine the object.

Cultural Artefact

You will chose a cultural artefact (a film, a painting, a poem, a song or anything created by humans) which demonstrates an aspect of intercultural communications, and use the theories and essays we have studied in class to examine the object. You can use two artefacts or objects if you plan to compare the two. do not use more than two.You must use at least two readings we studied in this class to analyse the object. Do not write a paper without connecting the object to the theories we studied. For example, you could pick an ‘ethnic’ or ‘exotic’ object (can be music, food, and so forth) and examine how it is marketed and sold to the mainstream. This is just an example. There are many possible topics but it must be related to intercultural communications. You should list at least six works in the bibliography with at least two from your assigned readings. The paper should be at least 1500 words. You must cite page numbers when using print publications. Do not rely only on internet sources. Naturally, your paper should have a thesis statement and the entire paper should support this thesis.

Create an infographic using the software of your preference.

Infographic Assignment

For this assignment, you are required to create an infographic using the software of your preference (e.g. PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop, and Online infographic software, like canva.com). An Infographic presents information in a graphic, visually attractive format and aims to make data easily understandable at a glance. A well-designed infographic can help you simplify a complicated subject or turn an otherwise boring subject into a captivating experience. We will discuss best practices in class and will provide you with resources.

Why this assignment?
The field of youth, media, and technology, is rich with research which is of interest to many parties, e.g. parents, teachers, policymakers, and youth themselves. However, the original academic sources are hard to understand for a wider audience.

As a youth, media and technology expert it is not only your task to stay on top of the latest developments within the field, but also to be able to communicate this to specific audiences in an accessible way. An infographic (IG) allows you to do just that. Your infographic needs to be complemented with a detailed account of the literature you have used; reflecting on your topic (part 1) and your audience (part 2). Please use the template provided here and review the grading rubric (see below). Your grade will be based both on your arguments as well as your creative effort.

Your infographic must provide a synthesis of at least three academic peer-reviewed articles to highlight the topic of your choice. At least two of these articles should have been published post-2019. Using more articles is appreciated but not required.

Pagina-einde

Part 1: Topic
First, you need to select a topic for your IG and argue why discussing this topic is timely (why this topic at this time). Also specify the age group that is most important for this topic, using information about their developmental characteristics to substantiate your claim.  In part 1 all your claims should be supported with references; the information you present in part 1 will likely come from one or more of your selected articles.
Length: ca. 500 words

Part 2: Infographic Audience
Second, you need to define the audience for whom you are creating your IG (e.g., teachers, clinicians, youth, app developers) and clearly formulate the question that is addressed in your IG. Describe why the information is especially important for the audience you have selected.
In part 2 you also need to describe the most important take-aways for your reader – thus the audience of your choice.  Your IG should include at least 3 interesting take-aways. These take-aways are of course based on your selected academic articles. Similar to Part 1, you need to make sure it is clear to the reader which references belong to which take-away points.
Length: ca. 500 words

Part 3: Annotated Reference List
Third, include an annotated reference list. This means that you are expected to write an annotation for three of your selected peer-reviewed academic articles. Please note that a peer-reviewed article is NOT a book chapter.

An annotated bibliography is a list of references that includes annotations that summarize, assess, and reflect upon each work. Each annotation includes (1) the full APA reference, (2) the original abstract, and (3) your ca. 100-word impression of the paper. Your impression should at least refer to the sample and method of the paper, and identify what you learned from this paper – and importantly, should not simply be a replication of the article abstract.

Overview of all references
In the last section, you will add the full reference list, which includes the three papers for which you have provided your impression, but also any other article or book chapter you might have used.

Deadline
The IG and Appendix should be submitted here. Assignments handed in after the deadline will automatically be graded as failed.

What does the text have to do with media studies/communications and what kind of concepts/ideas does it contribute to the field? How might it engage with other concepts we’ve talked about in the class?

Reading Response

You will be required to write two 2-page (double spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman) reading responses throughout the course of the semester on one of the primary sources we read during the semester.

1) A brief one-paragraph summary of the author’s argument in the reading you are responding to. What is their line of reasoning? Re-construct their position in your own words.

2) Your critical reaction to the reading, i.e. your thought process and engagement with the reading itself. It should demonstrate that you’ve engaged carefully with the reading and developed connections between the reading and concepts we’ve talked about in class. This should comprise the bulk of your response paper. Some questions you can consider here include (but are not limited to):

a. What does the text have to do with media studies/communications and what kind of concepts/ideas does it contribute to the field? How might it engage with other concepts we’ve talked about in the class?
b. How did you feel about what you read, and why do you think the text provoked this response in you?
c. Did the reading reflect or challenge your own values and assumptions, and how so?

3) Interwoven throughout your response, an example of how the text’s argument might or might not apply to a contemporary example of media/communication taken from your own environment. E.g. Does Anderson’s argument about nationalism hold up with regard to modern Internet culture? Why or why not?
