Contextual information
If you were a medical professional in the 1980s, the pager, a one-way communication medium, was probably part of your daily life. However, the pager is one of the mobile technologies that has failed, and you are unlikely to find one in a hospital today. Not only was the device very expensive, but it also proved to be of little use in that it merely notified a user that someone was looking for them. Despite providing little value to the user, pagers remained on the market for years to come, yet never made a real breakthrough. In contrast to this unsuccessful technology, think about the huge success and pervasiveness of mobile phone technology.
For the purposes of this activity submission, select one item from this list of successful and unsuccessful technologies:
• VHS

HU200 Course Assessment Module Five: Television

In this Assignment, you will investigate how creative expressions can broaden your perspective. You will do this by reflection on the impact that television and video art had upon a person. You may write about your own experiences, or you may interview a friend or family member. In either case, you should remain focused on the objective of evaluating and demonstrating how a point of view is changed through the influence of television and video art.

The television programs in this Assignment could have been viewed on a traditional television set, but they could also be from an internet series, streaming on a smartphone, or viewed through another medium. While movies are often shown on television, for this Assignment, you will want to look into television programs or series in particular. Please check with your instructor if you have a question about programming that may suit the Assignment.

  1. Open with an introduction to the paper. Give the reader a sense of context for the Assignment. Offer a preview of main points and a thesis statement.

In a new 2- to 3-page Word document, record the crimes reported in a local news media source in a table or bulleted list.

In a new 2- to 3-page Word document, record the crimes reported in a local news media source in a table or bulleted list. You will provide a written summary of the crimes you listed.
Select a local news media source that you would like to research—for example, a local print newspaper or local TV newscast.
Monitor the source for five days and make a list of the crimes that the source reported. Make sure to record the date range and name of the source you are monitoring.
Then, make a table with 3 columns or provide a bulleted list for each crime you listed: Crime category, description of crime, and details about representation.
In the table or bulleted list, list all the crimes you find in your source for that date.
For each entry, fill in the columns—type of crime (homicide, theft, disorderly conduct, etc.), a sentence describing its circumstances, and some details about the representation. For example, think about the following questions in your summary:
How was the story situated in relation to other elements in the source? For instance, was the story on the front page of a newspaper or at the beginning of a newscast?
Were there many details reported? Were people’s names used?
Was the crime solved? If so, how?
Were there multiple modes of representation—for example, pictures and text, text and video, and so on?
Assignment Submission:
This assignment requires the use of outside sources, and all sources must be cited.

Write two essays to critically reflect on media’s impact on society.

You will write two essays to critically reflect on media’s impact on society. For each essay, you will select an artifact (e.g. a music album, a tape recorder, an iPhone app, a Facebook profile page, a video game, a concert ticket, a baseball jersey, a tattoo, a fingerprint, as long as you can make a case that it can be considered as a medium), analyze it in relation to course concepts, and discuss its impact on society.
Grading Criteria: Content-wise: 1) describing the key facts of the media artifact; 2) briefly situating the artifact in a larger social historical context (e.g. where/when it came from, what forces shaped the way it is now—outside research needed) 3) applying one or more course concept(s) from the readings of the past 3 weeks—quality over quantity; 4) analyzing how this medium influences culture and society; 5) assessing its implications for larger questions or societal values concerning identity, privacy, intimacy, literacy, democracy, environment, etc. (i.e. the “so what” question);
Form-wise: 1) clear structure with a thesis; 2) written in good academic English with no grammatical or syntactical errors; 3) attaching multimedia aids—e.g. photographs, web links, video clips, etc.—to your argument; 4) including a MLA-format Works Cited list; 5) between 600 and 800 words.
