Speech details:

Your speech should be 3 – 5 minutes long. Read the Speech Timing policy on Moodle to make sure you understand the parameters of the speech format. Record your speech and upload it to Connect in the Introduction Speech assignment.

Once you establish your topic, consider the following for a good outline:

  • Grab the attention of the audience. Immediately introduce your central message and establish the main point.
  • Provide background information. Give context so the audience understands the relevance of this person.
  • Work out the focus of your discussion in a few sentences. Why is this person important to the communications industry? What is this person’s crowning achievement?
  • Give an example; expand on the achievement that makes this person important.
  • In conclusion, explain how the communications industry might be different without this person and/or their discoveries. What do we have today because of this person’s contributions? What polices or procedures have we changed based on previous historical events/procedures?

Speech Delivery Advice:

  • Plan the speech and rehearse it. You want to leave the audience with a good impression of you. You also want to begin to get used to speaking with a time limit.
  • Organize your ideas. Make sure the speech has an introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Deliver the speech from one 4″ x 6″ note card with just key ideas on it. This will be the best way to practice for the speeches to come.
  • Aim to address the audience (the video camera) with as much eye contact as possible.
  • CONSIDER THE BACKDROP OR BACKGROUND FROM WHICH YOUR SPEECH IS CREATED! Remember that the background can distract the viewer/listener if you are not careful. Remember that any noises, visual distractions, etc., that can negatively impact your speech will result in point deductions.

Here are Some Things I Look For in ANY Speech:

___ Did the speaker have an introduction? ___ Body? ___ Conclusion?

___ Did the speaker express ideas in an orderly way?

___ Did the speaker maintain audience attention with content? ___  delivery?

___ Did the speaker have good eye contact with the audience?

___ Did the speaker avoid filling pauses with words such as “like,” “you know,” “um,” “uh,” or “and”?

___ Did the speaker use vocal variation?

___ Did the speaker use hand gestures effectively?

___ Did the speaker use good posture and have a confident stance/presence on camera?

___ Did the speaker have appropriate facial animation?

___ Was the flow of words smooth and uninterrupted?

___ Did the speaker put the audience at ease?

Submit two short essays, which demonstrate critical thinking in regards to the course topics.

The Winners and Loosers of Technology- Important Issues in Computer Media

During this course, students will be responsible for submitting two short essays, which demonstrate critical thinking in regards to the course topics. Each essay will be worth 15% of the final grade and be approximately two to three pages in length. The essays can be written about ANY TOPIC RELATABLE TO ITEMS COVERED IN CLASS. In other words, the goal is to provide students with the opportunity to dig a little deeper on a topic of interest. (If you are unsure of your selected topic, feel free to email me for discussion or approval.)

Students may utilize in class readings for the paper, but it is expected that AT LEAST THREE ADDITIONAL OUTSIDE SOURCES will be incorporated to expand the learning process. Though the essays are intended to be less formal than the midterm paper, they should be carefully written, proofread, and must include citations in APA format for any works referenced. Those who simply use the short essays as expressions of their personal opinions will likely receive a lower grade, because unsupported opinions are unconvincing and carry less weight than knowledge claims that are based on evidence, such as research or expert knowledge.

Read the Castells chapter “Lessons from the History of the Internet” from his book The Internet Galaxy. What is one of the lessons that Castells describes?

Discussion board prompt:

Read the Castells chapter “Lessons from the History of the Internet” from his book The Internet Galaxy. You can download a PDF of this chapter from this week’s unit.
Our question as we read Castells is “What are the lessons?” and this assignment will guide you in responding to the reading and its “lessons.”

Make sure you carefully read it — it asks for a specific type of response. It is more complicated than most of our discussion board prompts and will take some time and thought.
What is one of the lessons that Castells describes?

This question is a little more complicated than at first it appears. It is actually a challenge in cooperation and close reading. If you are one of the first to answer, you could pre-empt other answers. The idea is not to launch a pre-emptive strike on other answers but rather to add one item to a succession of small, incremental contributions.

You should start a new thread and identify one lesson in the title. Then expand on this lesson in your post. You will need to say whether Castells explicitly says this is a lesson to be learned from the history of the Internet. (You can also, of course, find and state lessons he is not explicit about.)

What do you normally think about this subject, and what do you think after reading the story? Who (or what?) do you think is sending the messages about helping people, and why?

 A Good Old-Fashioned Future

Read the Bruce Sterling short story, “Maneki Neko,” from his collection A Good Old-Fashioned Future. The story in brief: the gift economy of a future Japan is made possible by (or driven by?) networked communications. People follow instructions sent to them anonymously via their hand-held devices to carry out random acts of kindness.
One idea to consider: the main character says of technology, “I really believe that computers help human beings to relate in a much more human way.” What do you normally think about this subject, and what do you think after reading the story? Who (or what?) do you think is sending the messages about helping people, and why?
