NEW York Times

Instructions for this Activity

In undertaking this activity, we are looking to recognize how news organizations are using innovative communication practices in order to both succeed as businesses and maintain their central mission of informing the public. We also want to analyze these practices as a way of understanding how these organizations are finding new ways of communicating with the public. All of you within your group should engage in thorough analysis of your news organization across platforms: print, television, online, social media. Even though these are print and television networks, they still seek to engage audiences and platforms online.

It is imperative that you gather information quickly, monitor the discussion often, and post as soon as possible so that the leader can post the video presentation on time.

Required Questions:

Is this, in your collective mind, an objective news organization? Explain through examples.
Does this news organization, in your collective mind, serve the public interest in a healthy manner? That is, does it provide information that is in the best interest of the audience and that promotes healthy engagement in civic life? If so, how? If not, articulate “the problems.” These can range from sensationalism to clickbait to bias to outright misleading or questionable information. Remember: It’s ok to have a news mix that offers hard news and soft news (the latter being more entertaining, lighter stories), but news should also be like a doctor-patient relationship, telling us what we need to know about our community or the world.
If you could make any changes to this news organization and the way in which it delivers information, what would it be?

Research and compile a total of ten sources. Once you have located and evaluated relevant articles, books, web sources, etc., and decided that they support your topic and tentative thesis or approach, then you need to create your annotated bibliography.

News Media

Why do professors make students complete an annotated bibliography? To give students a hard time and task-master them to death? No, of course not. It’s not just an assignment in and of itself; it is an important step in the research process. Your first stage was choosing a topic and doing some tentative research. Now you are going to find several relevant sources and provided a summary and evaluation of them. This is the topic you chose in Module 3, and this work will culminate in your final research project in Module 7.

An annotated bibliography is a listing of sources compiled from research that you will use in your completed essay. However, the “annotated” part shows that it is not only a list, but an elaboration and evaluation of your sources – that is, you express, in a paragraph, two things: that you understand and can encapsulate the source and that your source is relevant to your topic and approach. Your reading for this module includes a guide to annotated bibliographies. Be sure that you have read the information at that link before you proceed.

This activity aligns with course outcome 3.

Requirements

You need to research and compile a total of ten sources. Once you have located and evaluated relevant articles, books, web sources, etc., and decided that they support your topic and tentative thesis or approach, then you need to create your annotated bibliography.

First, cite the source in APA style. (Your annotated bibliography tutorial offers an example that you can follow.) Your sources should be listed in alphabetical order (as they will be on your “References” page in your completed essay).

Having read and sought to understand the source, in a paragraph (below the citation) summarize the central ideas and offer an evaluation that looks at the following. The most important is the fourth bullet:

  • the credentials, expertise, or background of the writer
  • the audience for the source (as best as you can gauge)
  • how it is similar or different from another work or works on your list
  • how this source relates to and supports and develops your own topic and approach

Select one area from either your professional life or from your personal life. Review the concepts you have studied in Modules 01-03. Choose at least one concept from each of the three modules and briefly explain how you can use the knowledge you acquired to improve your communication skills in your selected area.

Communiation

The following textbook is required for this course:

  • Butcher, Joni. Fundamental Communication Skills. 3rd ed. Kendall Hunt, 2020.

Assignment 1 Chapters 1,2,4 of book *This assignment is complete*

Select one area from either your professional life (e.g., your current place of employment or the career you hope to have in the future) or from your personal life (e.g., a club in which you are a member, volunteer work that you do, a cause you support, etc.). Review the concepts you have studied in Modules 01-03. Choose at least one concept from each of the three modules and briefly explain how you can use the knowledge you acquired to improve your communication skills in your selected area.

For example, maybe you currently work in a salon as a hairstylist (professional life). You might explain how, as a hairstylist, it is important to achieve shared meaning (Module 01) with your clients in order to cut their hair exactly how they want it. You might also discuss the resource-related conflict (Module 02) that occurs when you and your co-workers need to compete for limited supplies or appointment slots. Finally, you might elaborate on the need to develop good conversation skills (Module 03) in order to initiate, maintain, and end conversations with clients while you are cutting their hair.

Or maybe you volunteer at an animal rescue organization (personal life). You might explain the importance of using the communication channel of social media (Module 01) in order to relay information about adoption days and the pets that are available for adoption. Resource-related conflict (Module 02) may also be a problem here because you don’t receive enough donations to cover all your expenses for food and veterinary care. Finally, you might discuss the simple conflict based on individual differences you encounter (Module 03) when speaking to prospective adopters about the negative aspects of declawing cats.

Write a paper, approx. 6-8 pages in length that analyzes an assigned case study in communication law. Explain in your own words the background and history of the case.

Moot Court Assignment

COMM 420, Sp. 22 – Communication Law

Outline for Legal Case Study Paper/Moot Court Arguments

  1. Write a paper, approx. 6-8 pages in length that analyzes an assigned case study in communication law. The paper should include legal citations for sources used.

  1. The paper must adhere to acceptable grammar and spelling rules, and must be typed, double-space with acceptable (no more than 1″) margins. Type face may be no larger than 12-point.  Points will be deducted for misspellings and grammatical errors.

  1. All papers are due by 11:59 pm on May 16. No late papers will be accepted. No exceptions!  They will be processed and sent to peer reviewers the next day.  Please note:  If you do not submit a paper, you will not be able to participate in the Peer jury reviews.  Again, no exceptions to this.

  1. Papers should investigate the case study as it relates to a fundamental legal principle. An outline for the case study evaluation should include:  Your paper should use this outline format:

  1. Introduction to the case study

Explain in your own words the background and history of the case; what’s it about, what’s really going on with this situation, etc.  You can take this from the case study I provided, but you need to explain it in your  own words. Include:

Background

History of the events that led to the lawsuit

  1. List and explain the tort standard for this area of law. Don’t just list, be sure you explain each tort.    You did this on the exam and in case studies so this isn’t new

III. Rule on the case – from the perspective of the Plaintiff or Defendant (you’ve been assigned to one                       side)

  • Apply the current standard of law that explained above
  • Be sure to apply all tort standards of the law to your ruling. If you think one doesn’t apply, say             that but you also have to explain why it doesn’t relate.
  • Use legal citations to support your arguments. Don’t forget First Amendment Principles, the 3 C’s, etc. I’ve provided cases for you and there’s a tutorial attached on how to find cases.
  • Argue the law/restriction constitutional or unconstitutional?

*Base this on any important cases/case law. In other words, support your arguments — explain why you came to that conclusion and how your argument is based on legal reasoning.

  1. State why your side should win this case! State your strongest legal arguments based on the application of the standards you applied above and make a persuasive argument as to why your client        should win the case.

  1. You should write this as a paper – do NOT pretend that you’re making argument in a court. This s not an exercise in oral arguments.

  1. Your paper, and your opponent’s paper, will be sent to the peer jurors without your name on it. Jurors will review your arguments, complete a review form and vote on which side one. The winning paper will receive extra credit added to their grade.

What strategies work or don’t work in their use of social media? Do you see a reflection of the impacts discussed in our article? Are you personally drawn in – does the strategy emotionally connect you to the brand? Would you share it in your social network(s)?

How Brands Using Social Media Ignite Marketing and Drive Growth

Our module notes and our two articles have provided us with a foundation and some critical-thinking tools with which we can examine social-media marketing. Keep those texts in mind as you move on to the next discussion module. Where possible (and where helpful) use some of the ideas from our readings as we look at actual social media campaigns in this discussion. Think about the strategy, think about the goal, and consider how well it conveys its message, in your mind. This activity aligns with Module Outcomes 1 and 2.

Discussion Questions

400 words

Seek out the social media presence of three of the following organizations/companies and analyze their strategies: Coca-Cola, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Chobani, Nike, Lowe’s, American Red Cross, Reese’s, and/or World Wildlife Fund. Examine the social media presence on one platform as well.
What strategies work or don’t work in their use of social media? Do you see a reflection of the impacts discussed in our article? Are you personally drawn in – does the strategy emotionally connect you to the brand? Would you share it in your social network(s)?
Within these ads, do you see any potential ethical implications or potential for pitfalls (or failure)? Explain. For example, are there any potential ethical implications regarding what they are “selling” (product or idea)? If that is not the case, then can you see any potential for pitfalls or failure in the social-media marketing approach? Failure, of course, would mean the media doesn’t resonate and/or is not shared widely. (That is, it’s just not good marketing, plain and simple, especially for this kind of platform.)
