What is President Bush’s task at hand? More generally, in times of crisis, what are the core framing tasks of a leader? Does his framing accomplish that task? What is good or bad about it?

In the clip (2:02 minutes), President George W. Bush is addressing the construction workers and firefighters at Ground Zero only three days after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. In the middle of his remarks, someone from the crowd yelled that he can’t hear him. Notice Bush’s spontaneous framing of “the situation here and now” from that point, and discuss the following questions:

What is President Bush’s task at hand? More generally, in times of crisis, what are the core framing tasks of a leader?
Does his framing accomplish that task? What is good or bad about it?
Does Bush have more than one audience in this speech? If so, who might also be making attributions of leadership?
How does President Bush use that information to frame his message?

Format
Review the MSL Applied Case Study again (the Starbucks case you downloaded at the beginning of the program). Where do the concepts we’ve studied in this class emerge in the case? Select three areas of focus from our course content. In what ways are the concepts you’ve selected demonstrated in the case? The demonstration of the content might be in a positive or negative manner – you decide. Based on what you know now, recommend one course of action. Use specific examples to support your work.

Prepare a 4-6 page paper to present your analysis and application of the course content to the applied case. Incorporate references from our course texts to support your work.

Large medical facility

You are working in a large medical facility. You work with several doctors and nurses from other cultures. How might cultural differences impact your ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others? What can you do to ensure messages are clearly exchanged with others?

Define each of the two listening problems and then provide specific examples from your own experience. Briefly discuss how you plan on improving your own listening in these two areas.

Week 4

In this discussion forum, you will assess your own listening by using the concepts we learned in chapter six. Specifically, identify TWO forms of ineffective listening (choose from: pseudolistening, monopolizing, selective listening, defensive listening, ambushing, and literal listening) that you personally have the most trouble with. In your post, first define each of the two listening problems and then provide specific examples from your own experience. Lastly, briefly discuss how you plan on improving your own listening in these two areas.

Why is your ability to express yourself non-verbally in an electronic setting important? What are some ways you express emotion in a text message or email and have you had to adjust your nonverbal cues over time to ensure you are understood?

COM 352-Module 2 Discussion

1.Many of us pay close attention to and interpret nonverbal messages more easily when communicating face to face, but in today’s world, much of our communication is done virtually.

2. Why is your ability to express yourself non-verbally in an electronic setting important? What are some ways you express emotion in a text message or email and have you had to adjust your nonverbal cues over time to ensure you are understood?

3. What things to you have to consider when cross cultural communication occurs. For instance, idioms are widely used, however, it can be confusing to other cultures if it’s not apart of their norms. For example, saying the phrase “I am a happy camper” might actually imply to a person you literally are a camper. What are some idom phrases that may cause confusion cross culturally.

4. List a few steps by which we can prevent some of our nonverbal messages from being misconstrued.

Would you judge Secretary Clinton’s response as an emotionally intelligent one? How could Secretary Clinton frame her response so that it gave the same or similar message without the edge? Is it likely to have been more effective or less?

Disc5

In August of 2009, then U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at a press conference in the country of Congo in Central Africa. During the interview, one of the questions asked upset her. Although the questioner said afterwards that he misspoke, it did not lessen the drama of the situation. Watch the clip (1:00 mintue) and pay close attention to Secretary Clinton’s emotions.

Discuss the questions below:

How does the emotion shown by Secretary Clinton credit or discredit her position as leader?
Would you judge Secretary Clinton’s response as an emotionally intelligent one? Explain.
How could Secretary Clinton frame her response so that it gave the same or similar message without the edge? Is it likely to have been more effective or less?

Describe the impact of the humor within the setting. How did it change the dynamics of the situation? Reflect on how leaders can or should use humor. That is, when have you seen humor used effectively? When have you seen it fail?

Exercise

Class: Communication across Culture

This week you will apply the construct of framing humor through observations in your own professional or personal life. Observe a typically non-humorous setting (work meeting, church sermon, political speech or some other otherwise normal situation- not a comedy show or funny movie) – for at least 30-60 minutes. During that time, observe the types and amount of humor being displayed: aggressive (poking fun at someone else’s expense), affiliative (humor that helps build comradeie and relationships), self-enhancing (humor about oneself in a positive fashion) and self-defeating (poking fun at oneself in a demeaning way in order to build relationships) (you can read more about each at Psychology Today (Links to an external site.). Keep track of each and compile the frequency of each. Then, in a 4-5 page reflective paper:

Describe the types of humor you observed and what you believe the intended purpose of the humor was in the moment;
Describe the impact of the humor within the setting. How did it change the dynamics of the situation?
Reflect on how leaders can or should use humor. That is, when have you seen humor used effectively? When have you seen it fail?
Incorporating what you’ve read about framing, how does your understanding of humor fit within a framing construct?
Your paper should comply with all APA requirements, including but not limited to proper citations and references, page numbering, margins, and use of a title page, abstract, and reference page.

How does the context of the speech lend itself to humor? What cultural discourses does Mr. Buffet or the leader in your video draw from? What terminology and arguments suggest these discourses?

Class: Communication across Culture

In the video(attached) (6:33 minutes), billionaire Warren Buffett is in the middle of a speech to MBA students in Florida. As he is discussing his leadership of See’s Candy, you will hear him use a significant amount of humor; notice the power of narrative in which it is embedded.

Find your own video example of a leader exhibiting humor (this can be any type of leader – a politician, a business leader, a community leader, etc.) Include the link to your video in your post. Then answer the following questions:

How does the context of the speech lend itself to humor?
What cultural discourses does Mr. Buffet or the leader in your video draw from? What terminology and arguments suggest these discourses?
How can you use opportunities to inject humor into your framing?
