Demonstrate a sound understanding of one of the research methods discussed in the course and how it has been used in practice.

Chosen Research Method: Observational
Students are each required to submit a 500-word reflection as either a Word doc or a PDF. The aim of this task is to demonstrate a sound understanding of one of the research methods discussed in the course and how it has been used in practice.
Students will summarise one of the methods discussed in the course and also locate and summarise one academic journal article that uses the same method. Students are encouraged to use formal academic language but can use a structure that best suits their personal preference. The reflection should also include an in-text citation for both the method (found in the textbook) and for the journal article. The reflection should ideally attempt to link the method and the article.
This can be done via a number of approaches:
• students can discuss how the method was used in the journal article
• students can critique the effectiveness of the article’s method
• students can discuss how the article extends/modifies the method
You have completed the same assignment for me before, please pick a communications article that you prefer within the communications field. Thank you!

Choose a speech to analyze and develop an outline and a thesis statement for your analytical paper.

Analytical Paper Outline and Thesis Statement
This week, you will choose a speech to analyze and develop an outline and a thesis statement for your analytical paper.
Using the critical reading skills practiced during this course, you will formulate a thesis statement that presents a unique and specific interpretation of the speech. In order to analyze effectively, you will need to engage in close reading, or reading “between the lines.” This means that you will be choosing representative passages and carefully deconstructing them, highlighting connotations that may not be immediately obvious to fellow readers.
This week’s assignment:
Review the instructions and requirements for the analytical paper.
Choose and read ONE of the following options to analyze:
Donald Trump’s 2018 rally speech (excerpts)
Develop a thesis statement in which you present your interpretation of the speech.
Develop an outline using the provided template to help you organize your points to support your thesis statement. Think of it as a skeleton that you will “flesh out” when you write your paper.
You must write full sentences for the thesis statement, the topic/transition sentences, the passages, and the restatement of thesis.
Note: The passages will be direct quotes from the text, so include quotation marks and a citation in APA style.
Do not include any information from research yet. You first want to make sure that you have enough evidence from the text itself to defend your thesis.
Now that you have written a thesis statement and created an outline for your paper, you will use the critical reading skills practiced in this course to defend your interpretation of the speech you have chosen to analyze. Keep in mind the framework for critical reading that we have explored: Audience, Purpose, Content, Mood, Style, and Structure. You should also include commentary on rhetoric and propaganda as discussed during this course.
Your paper must include the following:
An introduction that provides relevant background information and ends with your thesis statement
A minimum of six body paragraphs that defend your thesis statement
A minimum of three references from reliable sources; one must be a scholarly, academic article, and all must be cited at least once in the paper
A conclusion that reaffirms your thesis statement and addresses wider implications
Formatting, citations, and references must all adhere to APA style

What kinds of conversations are you having about the health behavior, and how is that/will that affect your adherence?

Instructions
Four Health Inquiry (HI) Papers (20 pts each/80 pts total). During our semester, students will complete 4 HI’s that reflect material and application of ideas corresponding to our readings. We have in total of 7 HI topics. Students can choose 4 (four) topics they want to work on and submit the work according to each deadline. Each of these papers requires the use of at least one source to cite. Our book is a great source. Please cite the source using APA formatting. The HI is a short 2-3 page paper (double-spaced) and will address the following subjects:
HI 1: Do Something
How often can you say that a school assignment makes you healthier? This one does! For this assignment, you may choose to start doing one healthy thing or you may choose to give up one unhealthy thing. If the ideas below do not appeal to you, you are free to think of something else, but please make it relatively challenging. We’ll learn about many ways that health and interpersonal communication intersect. For your report, keep track of any troubles you are having or predict having as you attempt to adhere to this new behavior regimen. Also keep track of the things that seem to make it easier for you to change. Focus specifically on the role that others—your friends, family, co-workers—play in influencing your adherence. Will other people help you to develop or break your habit, or did they tempt you to fall back into unhealthier behavior? Will others’ opinions of your behavior matter? What kinds of conversations are you having about the health behavior, and how is that/will that affect your adherence? Be sure to pay attention to both the direct and the indirect ways that others influence your health behavior.
Option A: Develop a healthy habit: Drink eight 8oz glasses of water a day; Exercise at least 20 minutes a day, 3-5 days a week; Eat 2-4 servings of fruit a day; Eat 3-5 servings of vegetables a day; Park far away from where you need to be and walk; Floss your teeth consistently; Take the stairs instead of the elevator; Get enough sleep.
Option B: Break an unhealthy habit: Stop smoking cigarettes; Stop drinking alcohol; Stop drinking caffeine; Stop eating candy and other sweets; Stop eating unhealthy snacks (e.g., potato chips); Stop eating red (or all) meat; Stop drinking soda; Cut down on fat consumption (no more than 30% of calories); Stop texting while you drive.

Analyze the consequences of the concepts effective or ineffective application.

DIRECTIONS for paper:
After reading the autobiography of Luis Rodriguez and participating in our discussions of the book, now it is your turn to communicate what you learned from the book.
In a 2-3 page essay follow the guidelines below to complete the assignment.
In your first paragraph
briefly summarize the book to give a general idea of the overall story. End your introduction with a thesis statement about two intercultural communication concepts that will be developed in the body of your essay.
In the body of your essay
For each intercultural concept you have chosen, identify examples of how each is demonstrated by the characters and/or development of the plot.
Describe how the concept is applied in the story. Be specific as you describe the character(s) and/or event(s) where this concept is demonstrated. Use appropriate terms from the text.
Evaluate whether the concept is applied effectively or ineffectively (good example or bad example).
Analyze the consequences of the concepts effective or ineffective application. Consider the short-term and long-term consequences to the character(s) and/or plot. Go beyond the actual book
In a concluding paragraph
summarize your insights regarding intercultural communication as demonstrated in the book. What are the major lessons to be learned?

How do communication styles of conflict management differ on task and social dimensions of small groups?

Reflect on Conflicts within Small Groups
Based on your personal experience in being either a member or leader of a small group respond to the questions below:
1. How do communication styles of conflict management differ on task and social dimensions of small groups?
2. When would you use a competing (power-forcing) style or a collaborating style? Explain and provide examples. Is there a spiritual basis for your choice?
3. How might group members short-circuit conflict spirals?

Propose a solution to the problem or issue, and to present that solution to a decision-maker or group of decision-makers who can implement the recommendation.

For the researched proposal, you will identify a problem or issue in your present or past workplace, or in your community. The assignment objective as provided in Unit 4, is to propose a solution to the problem or issue, and to present that solution to a decision-maker or group of decision-makers who can implement the recommendation. You will support your proposal with research.
You will develop a concrete, practical solution to the problem that can be implemented. Reference sources will be included that explain the problem, issue, and/or support the solution.
The proposal must be between 2,500 to 3,000 words using APA format for your citations and references. The proposal itself should be single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs. The word count includes all components. The purpose of establishing a word count is to ensure the topic chosen is neither too big nor too small. Also, writing within parameters is a common requirement in business communications.
Checklist:
Contains no fewer than 2,500 words; no more than 3,000.
Includes a minimum of one original graphic.
Clearly identifies the audience and purpose.
Shows research has been conducted and preliminary integration of research material is in place following current APA formatted in-text citations.
No fewer than five references are cited, at least one of which is a peer-reviewed article.
