What should we tell the media? How can we avoid a public relations fiasco, given the fact that much time has transpired without full resolution?

Part 1. Press Conference Document

In this single-player simulation, you will play the role of a product manager at Matterhorn Health, a medical device manufacturer. The company recently launched the GlucoGauge blood glucose monitor, the company’s most expensive product development effort to date. In spite of vigorous pre-release testing, there are problems reported by customers almost immediately after launch. Throughout the simulation, you will use a series of desktop applications to receive communications from your colleagues at Matterhorn Health about the problem at hand. You will receive a barrage of information through various channels – email, video messages, voicemail messages, and instant message chats – requesting that you determine the root cause of the issue and make recommendations on how Matterhorn can get ahead of this problem. This simulation explores issues related to human judgment, decision-making, and communication during a crisis. You must examine all data carefully and use it to inform your decisions.

Part 1. Press Conference Document (6% of Course Grade)
After going through the stimulation you will be requested by the CEO for input to a press conference to address mounting questions about the unfolding situation. The public wants some answers. Although the company would have communicated to the press several times during the crisis, but the time has come for another significant push in terms of external communication.
• What should we tell the media?
• How can we avoid a public relations fiasco, given the fact that much time has transpired without full resolution?
You would be expected to think about the many constituents (customers, healthcare professionals, insurers, government regulators, and shareholders), and craft an opening statement for the press conference. The CEO would like your recommendations on what should be said to the public. The nature of your draft to the CEO should reflect your responses and actions throughout the simulation.

Communication Breakdown

One does not have to search hard to find conflict. It’s everywhere—in our personal relationships, our communities, our state, our nation, and our world. Conflict is an inevitable part of life. For this assignment, reflect on one interaction you have had recently with someone you interact with regularly (classmate, co-worker, family member, friend, etc.,) which resulted in conflict. It would be best if you considered using the conflict chosen for last week’s discussion forum.

Which (of the five types of conflict (described in our course textbook) did you experience? Can you identify a specific pattern used in the conflict? Did any of the factors that can influence interpersonal conflict (sex and gender, culture, context, etc.) come to play in your scenario? Explain how your conflict style (based on the conflict management assessment posted last week) affected your interpersonal conflict. A summary (4-5 sentences) of the conflict should be included in the introduction of your paper.

Week Three Post #1

This week, we’ve acquired a new terminology for discussing power. In this forum, we will apply that terminology to our own experiences.

In one post, briefly describe a situation in which you felt you enjoyed a position of power. Using the language we’ve gained this week, describe the nature and sources of the power you felt. Did you apply that power in any way (in other words, actively employ it vis-à-vis the other party)? How did this affect the situation? What have you learned regarding the concept of power from this situation?

In a separate post, briefly describe a second situation in which you felt you were relatively weak, or at a lost for power. Using the language we’ve gained this week, describe the nature and sources of the power you felt the other party enjoyed over the situation and the types of power you felt you lacked.

Week three post #2

In a separate post, briefly describe a second situation in which you felt you were relatively weak, or at a lost for power. Using the language we’ve gained this week, describe the nature and sources of the power you felt the other party enjoyed over the situation and the types of power you felt you lacked. Did the other party apply their power in any way (in other words, actively employ it to achieve an advantage over you)? How did this affect the situation? What did you do (if anything) to try and change the unbalanced power situation? What have you learned regarding the concept of power from this situation?

Post these in two separate posts, one describing your relatively powerful situation and another sharing your relatively powerless situation. Note each in the header (e.g., Susan Smith – ‘I ruled all!!!’ or ‘John Jones’ – ‘Powerless in Poughkeepsie’). Please make these initial 2 posts by Wednesday. In addition, reply to (at least) one posting by another student.

With a rise in online platforms dedicated to social and professional networking, are cover letters and resumes out of date or even obsolete? Why or why not? Include information from one external source in your response.

Unit 1 e-Discussion – communication

Separate your response to questions 1 and 2 with section headings such as Q1 and Q2
You must cite your sources in your discussion post using an in-text citation and a corresponding full References citation

Question 1 – With a rise in online platforms dedicated to social and professional networking, are cover letters and resumes out of date or even obsolete? Why or why not? Include information from one external source in your response. Cite the source in APA style within your response and provide a link to the source at the end of your response to that question. You must mention at least one topic from Chapter 1 or Chapter 4 of the textbook within your response, and state how it relates to your response to this question.

Question 2 – What would a hiring manager think of a candidate when the manager notices spelling or grammatical errors on the candidate’s cover letter, resume, LinkedIn or other social media site? Do spelling or grammatical errors on cover letter or resume matter to hiring managers? Why or why not? Again, do a little research to inform your thinking and include information from one external source in your response. Cite the source in APA style within your response and provide a link to the source at the end of your response to that question. You must mention at least one topic from Chapter 1 or Chapter 4 of the textbook within your response, and state how it relates to your response to this question.
