First, review the articles from the Module Five resources, Evidence-Based Practice, Evidence-Based Policing, and the website Center for Evidence-Based

Corrections.
Next, consider the following scenario: Your colleagues need to be convinced of the need to implement EBP into a response to a public policy issue that your criminal justice agency must address.
Use the Memorandum Template to complete the assignment. Address the following critical elements as they are reflected in the Sample Policy Memorandum. Prompt: Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
1. Issue Presented: In a brief one-sentence question, summarize the importance of implementing at least one new EBP into a response to your previously selected public policy issue.
2. Short Answer: Provide a short answer that summarizes the conclusion of the memorandum.
3. Statement of Facts: Describe how implementing EBP will result in more effective policy making.
4. Discussion: Briefly discuss at least one recent example of a departmental policy (from law enforcement, the courts, or corrections) that has effectively been revised to incorporate EBP.
5. Conclusion: Provide a conclusion based on the research you have done and the details you have gathered.
6. Recommendations: Recommend at least one new EBP to your colleagues and include reasons why it will improve the response to the public policy that your criminal justice agency must address.

Overview: For this assignment, due in Module Five, you will submit a 2–3 page draft of your historical analysis as well as your analysis of criminological theories relevant to your public policy issue selection. You will analyze the history of the public policies (related decisions, actions, laws, and or positions of both the state and federal government) related to your selected public policy issue. This draft should be as detailed as possible in order to allow the instructor to provide significant feedback, which you can incorporate into your final project.
Completing an analysis of the history of your selected public policy issue and analyzing the criminological theory that best explains the development of the public policies related to it in this milestone will lay the groundwork you for your Milestone Three submission in Module Seven, where you will identify the specific public needs that are targeted by the issue and determine how well the policy addresses those needs. You will then be examining how the policy can be changed or improved upon to continue to address the identified need and how these changes can be accomplished while at the same time improving upon the delivery of necessary criminal justice services.

Prompt: Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Historical Analysis: To inform your recommendations for the departmental public policy, you will analyze the history of the selected public policy issue, identifying key influential trends, and predict the potential future direction of the state or federal policies in supporting this issue. Specifically:
a) Identify key trends, both modern and historical, that have shaped the evolution of the state or federal public policies surrounding your selected public policy issue, justifying your identifications. How have the policies around this issue evolved, and what trends have influenced this evolution?
b) Identify court cases that have shaped the evolution of the public policies related to your chosen public policy issue, justifying your identifications.
c) How have the previously identified historical events impacted the public’s perception of the relevant state or federal public policies? Provide
specific examples. How has public perception evolved in relation to these specified events?
d) Predict the potential future direction of the state or federal public policies based on the previously identified historical and modern trends. How
might the state or federal public policy continue to evolve?

II. Criminological Theory: Now that you have analyzed the related state or federal public policies, you will analyze relevant criminological theory.
a) Select a criminological theory that best explains the development of the public policies related to the issue, justifying your selection. Consider how the theory explains the previously identified influence of the trends or court cases on the development of the policies.
b) Draw connections between the selected criminological theory and the departmental policy. Where are there specific connections between the theory and the departmental policy?
c) Draw connections between the selected criminological theory and the related state or federal public policies. Where are there specific connections between the theory and the selected state or federal policies?

Identify the articles chosen for the comparison at the beginning of the reflection through citing or mentioning the articles.

Reaction 5

Throughout the semester, students will be required to regularly submit three-page reflections that will provide an integrated comparison of the research of two of the four assigned articles for the week of the assigned reflection. Each reflection will be 12-point, double-spaced, Times New Roman and the students will present their comparison of their chosen articles throughout the length of each reflection. Students will need to identify the articles chosen for the comparison at the beginning of the reflection through citing or mentioning the articles (please do not include the titles).

Students will be required to use 7th edition APA citation and referencing style for the chosen articles. The instructor has provided the correct 7th edition APA style references and parenthetical citations in the course schedule for each of the readings. There will also be a class on 7th edition APA citation and referencing style during the second week, so students will have no excuse for getting citations and references wrong.

If they wish, students may cite and reference popular press articles to provide additional comparison, but they are not required to give additional sources for any reflection. If students choose to bring in other sources, they will need to cite and reference them according to the guidelines of the 7th edition APA citation and referencing style. The instructor forbids the usage of quotes in the reflections and restricts the usage of paraphrases to no more than one-quarter the length of the assignment. There will be five readings reflections.

Students will suffer a reduction of grades for the following:
1. -5% per quoted sentence (-10% if the quoted sentence is not cited correctly)
2. -5% for incorrect citations (-10% if they have no citations)
3. -5% for incorrect references (-10% if they have no reference)
4. -5% for incomplete comparison (-10% if they have no comparison)
5. -5% for incomplete integration (-10% if they have no integration)
6. -5% for missing an identification block or a title (-10% if missing both)
7. -10% per half page of text below 2.5 pages (cumulative with the above).

    • In your answer, discuss (at length) how these two things affect contemporary police-community relations. (2-3 paragraphs at least)
  • Brainstorm 2-3 other ways (or things that can be done) to bridge the gaps in police-community relations (especially in terms of racism, sexism, and homophobia/transphobia). Note: while there are things that citizens can do, I am asking you to think in terms of what police, state, and federal agencies can be held accountable for doing.

Why might you make a decision to forgive? What types of factors influenced the person to act the way he or she did? If you decided to forgive this person, how would that be different than forgetting?

CRM 475: Personal Reflection Paper #3

Forgiveness
Write a brief paper about the possibility of forgiving someone for a situation that occurred in the past that you still feel some anger about today. To guide your discussion, answer some of the
questions below.
Keep in mind that you do not have to actually forgive this person. Just consider it. Also, you do not have to discuss the most difficult experience of your life history. Just an example where forgiveness might be relevant.

All papers should be double spaced and approximately 23 pages in length. Final drafts are Due December 5th by 11:59PM. Post your final drafts on Blackboard.
Provide some background about the situation?
How have you coped with the situation so far?
How has your anger helped you cope? How has it interfered with your life?
Why might you make a decision to forgive?
What types of factors influenced the person to act the way he or she did?
If you decided to forgive this person, how would that be different than forgetting?

Excusing? Justifying?
What could you do to remove yourself from the victim role?
Think of one or two small ways that you might give something to the person who offended you?
How would forgiving help you to move forward with this situation?

Briefly explain the theory you used. Give us a quick overview of the theory and then tell us how that theory explains your problem. What are you recommending? Should we keep an existing policy, update or revise the policy, end a policy, or introduce a new policy entirely?

Week 9: Putting Theory to Work

This week, instead of discussing the readings, you’ll discuss your final paper. Share parts of your final paper with the class.

Briefly discuss your problem.
Briefly explain the theory you used. Give us a quick overview of the theory and then tell us how that theory explains your problem.
What are you recommending? Should we keep an existing policy, update or revise the policy, end a policy, or introduce a new policy entirely?

In your discussion (for this post, not in the final paper), let us know why your theory is such a good fit to explain and solve the problem you identified. In what ways is your theory limited to explain your problem? Talk about how difficult or easy it is to create a policy based on that theory. Remember that this is a theory class. Your final paper needs to be strong on theory, so use this time to work out any lingering confusion you have with your theory.
