Was there any other evidence in the case that concerns you as an Investigator, why or why not? What is the first officer’s responsibility at a crime scene and what was done or not done in the Ramsey case?

Assignment 2: Ramsey Case Scenario

It is important to understand evidence and its importance to the investigative process.

In a minimum of 2 pages, write a paper that starts by identifying at least four different types of evidence that is found in the Ramsey case and then focuses specifically on the glass evidence in the Ramsey case.

After reviewing Ramsey case, you learned that the broken window in the basement in the middle of December was a key piece of evidence in the case.

  1. What is the first officer’s responsibility at a crime scene and what was done or not done in the Ramsey case?
  2. Describe how to collect and preserve glass evidence.
  3. Would the way the glass evidence at the crime scene was documented, collected, and preserved have any impact on the examination results at the lab? Support your conclusions.

Identify three crime prevention programs currently being utilized in communities and found in the K–12 school system, either national, state or local programs.

Assume the role of a social science researcher in charge of developing a new crime prevention program targeted toward juveniles in the K–12 school system. Review current crime prevention programs that target juveniles and adults. There are several crime prevention programs that are designed for adults and which are also in K–12 schools nationwide with a standardized curriculum (i.e., Neighborhood Watch, D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T.) with many more programs created at the local level (i.e., Citizens Academy, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and YMCA after school programs are unique to the community).
Identify three programs currently being utilized in communities and in the K–12 school system, national, state, or local programs. Compare and contrast the programs in terms of goals and objectives, target population (e.g., who is receiving and participating in the program), and how and by whom the programs are delivered (i.e., taught by law enforcement officers, school counselors, individuals outside of the school system, etc.). Based on these comparisons, explain which elements you would place in your program and how your program will be delivered to the students.
Create a proposal for a new crime prevention program that targets juveniles and determine how you will evaluate its effectiveness. Use elements of the three crime prevention programs you researched or come up with completely different components.
In the analysis of how your program will deter juvenile delinquency, you will want to use data from your three comparison programs to support your new program. For example, how many juveniles are enrolled in the program? In order to deliver the best programming possible for juveniles in the K–12 school system, calculate the optimal ratio of staff to the target population, based on the average ratio of the comparison programs.
Your analysis should specifically identify the data source and include a summary of the data.
Specifically address how the data was used to inform your thinking on the development of your new program (i.e., how you used the data to solve a real-world problem).

Create an 8 page word document to include the following:

• Identify three crime prevention programs currently being utilized in communities and found in the K–12 school system, either national, state or local programs.
• Tell about each program, explaining its goals, target population (i.e., adults, elementary school kids, 5th graders only, kids in each grade level, etc.), and how/where it is delivered.
• List and explain the pros and cons of each program.
• Compare each program to the others.
• Discuss the differences in methods used in the programs between youth and adults.
• Tell how successful you believe each program has been and justify your opinions.
• Explain which elements of each program you would include in your program and why you feel they are important.

• Who is your target population, what are your goals, and how will your program be implemented?
• Explain your program, detailing the elements of it and why it will be effective.
• Describe how the program’s effectiveness will be analyzed and how the objectives will be evaluated.
• Specify how deterrence will be measured and what will be considered effective deterrence.

Select any crime problem or type of crime, and after supplying an overview of the issue, apply criminological theories that tend to explain the causes of the criminal activity.

Each student will prepare a paper written in APA style that has eight to ten pages of text.
•Select any crime problem or type of crime, and after supplying an overview of the issue, apply criminological theories that tend to explain the causes of the criminal activity.
• References should include a balance of journal articles, text books, and current popular literature.
• An example of a paper might include an overview of recent riots with a criminological explanation that the crime is so because people in authority are abusing their power. This might be explained through the application of Conflict Theory. A more simplistic approach could be that according to Classical Theory, people are making a free choice to riot and break the law.

Which one do you like best? What are its strengths and weaknesses (each of them has both). Then identify the category of theories that you feel does the poorest job of explaining crime?

Chapters 4-9 in our text examine a number of broad categories of theories concerning why crime occurs, ranging from Rational Choice to Social Conflict/Critical Criminology, Strain Theory, exc..

In your view, which of these broad categories makes the most sense to you in explaining criminal activity?

Which one do you like best? What are its strengths and weaknesses (each of them has both). Identify the category of theories that you feel does the poorest job of explaining crime?

Provide some support for why you believe this to be the case. You do not specifically have to compare/contrast the two categories, but you may if you wish.

Should hunger strikes be considered “protected speech” under the 1st Amendment? Should the government be able force-feed inmates who refuse to eat? If so, at what point in a hunger strike should this take place?

read a supplemental article on Canvas, and read/watch the content at the hyperlinks provided in this document.

From July to September of 2013, 30,000 prisoners in California participated in a 2-month long hunger strike in order to raise awareness about issues facing inmates in the CA prison system. You should watch the following video to familiarize yourself with this topic

In late August 2013, just weeks before the hunger strike ended, a California judge gave prison officials the authority to force feed some of the prisoners on hunger strike.

On Canvas I have placed a reading by Joel Greenberg regarding the constitutional protection of hunger strikes.

  • What did you learn about the hunger strike from the video that you viewed? What were the main issues surrounding this hunger strike?
  • Summarize the article that you read regarding the CA judge’s approval of force-feeding hunger strike participants.
  • The Greenberg article basically outlines several arguments. I would like you to summarize what the author states in terms of:
    1. The Constitutional protection of a hunger strike
    2. Governmental interests in preventing hunger strikes
    3. Societal interests in hunger strikes
  • Overall, what is your opinion on this topic? Should hunger strikes be considered “protected speech” under the 1st Amendment? Should the government be able force-feed inmates who refuse to eat? If so, at what point in a hunger strike should this take place?

Select one individual who was exonerated by DNA evidence that you would like to research. Do you believe this individual was convicted based on systematic discrimination or was in contextual in nature?

Select one individual who was exonerated by DNA evidence that you would like to research. Relate to how the criminal justice system failed this individual. Do you believe this individual was convicted based on systematic discrimination or was in contextual in nature? Argue your case and try to explain what went wrong. In arguing your case, you need to explain the details of the person you chose- you may want to look at where in the CJ system failed the individual (ex: bad police practice, bias, jury selection, eye witness ID, etc.) Explain if you feel the failure in the CJ system is systematic, institutionalized, contextual, an individual act of discrimination or that there was no racial or ethic discrimination, also known as pure justice. Some of the questions you may want to ask yourself are: Have reforms been enacted as a result of this injustice? How has this injustice impacted the CJ system? What could have been done to better ensure that an innocent person would not be wrongfully accused:
● how much time in jail or awaiting trial? ● age at time of conviction? ● race of defendant, race of victim? ● how long spent in prison? ● were they serving on death row? ● what was the crime they were convicted for? ● how many times were they denied parole? ● how were they convicted? ex: eyewitness ID, etc ● what was the race of the victim and do you believe it played a role? ● were there witnesses to the crime? ● was forensic science used? ● was there a confession, admission or a guilty plea?
● is there any type of disability/ mental illness involved? ● was the defendant indigent- was their lawyer private or public? ● was there a use of informants? ● after release- was there some type of compensatory award? ● did the accused receive a monetary award and was it appropriate for time spent in prison? ● was the true perpetrator of the crime ever identified?
