This cultural work should meet the following conditions:

  • It can take any form and be from any physical modality (visual, aural, tactile, and so on).

Unit 2 Assessment – Amendments and Personal Liberty

In Unit 2, you learned about specific government artifacts, including the Constitution, the amendments to the Constitution, Acts of Congress, and Executive Orders. You also explored the processes used to create these tools that molded modern culture into what it is today.

The research paper is designed to help you analyze the topics and issues presented in the readings and class discussions and relate them to and analyze current events and issues.

You should choose recent newspaper/magazine article(s) relating to current events/issues (within the last two years) concerning Latin@s in the United States and build and formulate an analysis of the topics and issues raised in those current event articles by incorporating them with the topics and issues raised in the readings and class discussions. You may select a topic from the list provided or create your own topic (subject to Professor Morales’s approval prior to start). You should present and support all arguments to be made on an issue when formulating your analysis and you may utilize novels, movies, documentaries or your own life experiences to enhance your points and arguments. *Must attach a works cited page to your paper and ensure to cite anything that is not an original thought, Your paper should be a min. 5 pages – max. 7 pages (double spaced- 12 font), at least 5 sources.

1. Discuss the reasons for segregating Mexican children (U.S. born and immigrant) according to San Miguel. Be sure to add the consequences explained by the author (he says there were positive and negative ones). What do you think?

2. The educational pipeline is defined as the flow of knowledge, skills and students. According to Yasso and Solórzano, what are some of the school conditions that hold back Mexican-origin students from successfully navigating the pipeline?

3. On page 78, second paragraph, Diaz-Soto describes the function of critical bilingual-bicultural pedagogy. The focus is on students and families. What are the three goals bilingual-bicultural educators should ensure to help students and families achieve?

4. What does Helen Rowan mean by the “educational deprivation” of migrant students? That is, what are the experiences that affect schooling outcomes? Explain.

Just in case: Migrant students are the children of migrant workers who generally work in agriculture and because of a lack of work (end of the harvest) must journey to other parts of the country to locate work and support their families. Many times, children are pulled out of school (say, Socorro elementary) and enrolled in a new one (South Texas). From their they are taken out of school and journey to still another site and reenrolled in school. This can go on for a year until the family returns home to work in the harvest and after a couple months, they are back on the road. This alone can affect achievement.
