To what extent culture affects or influences an individual

What is your definition of “culture?”

It is my hope that this assignment will give you a fresh perspective on your own culture and beliefs as you interview someone that is different from you. Realize that this person does not speak for their entire culture or people group. They and their perspective are their own. But rarely are people given a chance to talk about their beliefs. In the process of talking with this person, I think you may be surprised at the commonalities that you both share as well as your different viewpoints.
Print off the attached list of 28 questions that I obtained from Professor Linda Levine of San Jose State University. Select 5-8 questions that you want to ask your interviewee. Your goal is to understand more about another person’s perspective, get a good conversation going by creating a comfortable atmosphere.

Then write up a single page paper with 3 paragraphs- the first one tells about your interviewee, the second paragraph on what you learned about this person’s culture/beliefs/values/faith that was different from your own, the third paragraph on what you found you had in common. I do not want to see a script of the questions you asked and their answers. Do not ask every single one of the 28 questions.Cultural_Intervxw_Questions from San Jose State University Linda Levine.doc

Describe some of the unequal conditions that have pushed students out and away from the pipeline.

Reflect on your journey through the pipeline. Was it expected that you would graduate from college or was this always your goal? Was it easy or difficult? Explain. Think of learning a new language; even thinking in a new language. did your teachers mentor you or ignore you? Did your friends follow you through the pipeline or did they take a different path?

You don’t have to write on all these questions. They are designed to jog your memory and get you thinking. You decide on the narrative – the story you want to tell.

Write 3 pages. Be sure your name is one the paper. Double-space and have one-inch margins all around. Do not worry about style – MLA or APA, but be sure your paper contains an introduction, a body of three to four paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Uploaded the material provided by my professor that can be useful to help answer

“According to Yosso and Solarzano, the education pipeline is defined as the “flow of knowledge, skills and students” the move through the pipeline. This means that as you pass through each grade, the flow of knowledge and skills become more complex. The authors also mention that Mexican-origin students “suffer the lowest educational attainment of and major racial or ethnic groups in the United States.”

On page 42, the authors describe the pipeline in demographic form. This is an example. Beginning in elementary school, 100 Mexican-origin students (immigrant and native born enrolled in U.S. schools) begin their journey. You are one of those 100. You will notice the number of Mexican-origin students decrease as you scan down the pipeline. On pages 42-43, the authors describe some of the unequal conditions that have pushed students out and away from the pipeline. Have you or anyone you know been affected by these conditions?

Of these, only 8 graduate from college with a B.A. Will you be one of them? 2 earn a graduate or professional degree (M.A., JD or MD), but only .2 earn a doctoral degree (PhD). Although the data is 20years old, not much has changed. On page 44, the authors describe the persistence of Mexican-origin students to try and complete their schooling.”

What are/were some foods, celebrations, rituals, clothing, etc. that are/were meaningful to you and your family, which symbolize your cultural background?

The purpose of this learning activity is to make you aware of how a patient’s culture and/or ethnic background could impact how they react in certain situations regarding their health.

Do not use “official” or technical definitions. Use the words that would be used by you and your family’s concept of these topics. These are reflective questions and will require more than a few words to help me understand what you are telling me.

From the perspective of what culture are you writing? ________________________________ (your definition) ***(Im cuban*****

What are the benefits and consequences of associating culture with ethnicity?

first assignment:Discussion Question #2: This discussion question relates to the lecture on cultural identities, which focuses on how cultural identities are formed and the multiple cultural identities within each person. The lecture states that culture is described as a group of people who share meaning (meaning such as clothing, food, language, music, beliefs, traditions, rituals, etc.) Therefore, each person has multiple groups (sub-cultures) they share meaning with; for instance, a person could be a member of an ethnic group, religious group, gender group, sports group, music group, etc. An example from the lecture on cultural identities suggested that a person could be from the Armenian culture, female culture, Northern Californian culture, basketball culture, hip hop culture, and rave culture. This example highlights one of the main points of the lecture that people are multicultural (made up of many sub-cultures). For this assignment, you will be required to watch the following video and provide your opinion. In summary, the video is a stand-up comedy routine by Trevor Noah that uses humor to explain his experiences trying to learn and apply the norms of his culture. The video highlights the subtle and unconscious ways culture (and cultural practices) are passed on to us, which becomes integrated into our personalities, and then expressed in our behaviors. This assignment will require you to do the following: 1) Watch the Video, 2) Post a response to all or some of the following questions (your response needs to be about a paragraph long, which would include about 4-5 complete sentences) (2.5 points): Do you agree or disagree with the idea that cultural behaviors are learned? Who did you learn your cultural behaviors from, and how where they taught to you? What are some behaviors and values that members of your culture share? Have you ever experienced someone misperceive your cultural identity? Why do you think they misperceived you in the way they did? Have you experienced people expecting you to act a certain way due to your cultural identity? (in what ways?). Do all (or most) people within your culture act the same way? If not, what are the differences and why do you think they present their cultural behaviors different than you? Do you think people are multicultural (have many sub-cultures?). If so, where and how did you learn the practices of your other sub-cultures? What are your sub-cultures? Out of all of your sub-cultures, which ones do you identity with most? (and why?). Why do you think we have been taught to associate “culture” with “ethnicity?” Where did we learn this from? What are the benefits and consequences of associating culture with ethnicity? How can be learn to value people as both members of a different ethnic group and also as members of our same sub-cultural group? link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=YqciCFLxfEE&feature=emb_logo Second assigment: What is the ethical dilemma about? (Trolley, Stealing, Motive) Tell us how you voted and why? the files uploaded are for second assignment only, those are what I voted for second assignments second question

What sort of people and institutions might acquire special economic and political power because of technological change?

I have attached an example of what the powerpoint should look like. I also attached my outline that you should follow.

The final project is a presentation for an imaginary technology conference called in order to evaluate the impact of technology on culture. Students will pose questions of cultural concern in regard to new or emerging technologies and answer these questions in a multimedia presentation that uses scholarly research. The project will be completed in stages throughout the course and shared with the class in the final week. Students choose a new or emerging technology and ask the following questions about it (from Neil Postman, Building a Bridge to the Eighteenth Century):

What is the problem for which this technology is the solution?
Whose problem is it?
Which people and what institutions might be most seriously harmed by a technological solution?
What new problems might be created because we have solved this problem?
What sort of people and institutions might acquire special economic and political power because of technological change?
Students answer these questions by doing research in the UMUC library. At least six scholarly sources must be employed to answer the questions.

Your exhibit will consist of a multimedia presentation on a particular technology and its relationship to culture. The exhibit will address the following issues regarding technology and culture
