How relevant are these grouping strategies for classroom instruction?

Critical thinking requires skill at analyzing the reliability and validity of information, as well as the attitude or disposition to do so. The skill and attitude may be displayed with regard to a particular subject matter or topic, but in principle, it can occur in any realm of knowledge (Halterneck, 2003; Williams, Oliver, & Stockade, 2004).

A critical thinker does not necessarily have a negative attitude in the everyday sense of constantly criticizing someone or something.

Instead, he or she can be thought of as astute:

The critical thinker asks key questions, evaluates the evidence for ideas, reasons for problems both logically and objectively, and expresses ideas and conclusions clearly and precisely.

Last (but not least), the critical thinker can apply these habits of mind in more than one realm of life or knowledge.

Select 4 of the grouping strategies and then write an essay to include the following ideas.

Your essay should not be more than two pages long.

Discuss each idea in separate paragraphs. Do not number your paragraphs.

List the grouping strategies that you selected?

Why did you select these four grouping strategies?

How relevant are these grouping strategies for classroom instruction?

What is the role of the teacher in grouping students for instruction?

Based upon the research, do you think students should be allowed to join a group of their choice?

Transition Project Part I: Assessment Plan

PURPOSE: The purpose of this assignment is to gain experience transition planning for a student. Note: these assignments are not part of an actual IEP transition plan. We will complete one of those forms together.

These assignments are more about moving you through a thinking process as you plan for students.

RELEVANCE: All educators are typically involved in the IEP planning process at some point—even general education teachers and related service providers. And most educators will have students with disabilities included in their classrooms. Special educators work as a team with families, students, and a wide range of school-based professionals (e.g., administrators, general educators, related services providers, school counselors) to plan and implement IEPs and to develop transition plans.
PART 1: Assessment/Student characteristics
This section focuses on (a) identifying assessment tools that align with specific transition domains, evaluating assessment tools and their strengths and weaknesses, and modifying assessment tools to fit the needs of a wide range of students.
Using the Transition TN website www.transitiontn.org explore transition assessment tools. You will need to create a login. Make sure to explore the following tool:

Password: assessment
Complete the Casey Life Skills assessment as if you were Angelica’s teacher (it’s OK to make things up if needed). Then look at the resources on the website and the report that gets generated to respond to the rubric items.

You will need to access the video lecture and textbook for context. If you need additional information or resources, please email me and I can point you in the right direction. TransitionTN also has a great module on modifying assessments that can help you with this assignment (wink wink).

Discuss the rationale for the screening and assessment approach.

Develop a MOCK district or school wide (if the school is not part of a district) approach for screening and identifying gifted and talented students.

Think about how you would identify students for a gifted program.

Think about who will be tested and when (school hours/ on the weekend).

Also think about equity (are you testing an entire grade, age group, etc.) Discuss the rationale for the screening and assessment approach. Prepare a flyer to create an online display of the approach. Make sure you add images, links, and videos. (See attached rubric for flyer)
