Discuss the current policy responses relating to the attainment gap in Scotland and ONE other country

(Writer’s job is to write sections part of a larger essay – introduction and conclusion is NOT needed).

Question – Why does the attainment gap persist, and what can we do about it? (Scottish Context – Primary school mainly).

Draw upon both recommended theoretical and research resources and additional reading to provide a synthesis of the CURRENT policy landscapes and debates in Scotland. BUILD AN ARGUMENT FOR HOW EDUCATION PRACTICE AND POLICY IN RELATION TO THE ATTAINMENT GAP COULD BETTER CONTRIBUTE TO CREATING SUSTAINABLE, EQUITABLE AND PRODUCTIVE FUTURES FOR ALL YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND AND BEYOND.

Introduction and conclusion is not needed. Please write under these headings:

– Current Public Debates:

Outline current public debates within the media; what has been discussed? Covid19 impact (school closures, home learning, widened the gap?) choose another 1 or 2 current debates on the attainment gap in the media (suggestion – how all the pressure and responsibility is on teachers, where is the collective effort? Maybe the government need to address deeper issues in inequality that widen the gap, social reform?) – BBC News, articles, documentaries etc.

– Governmental Policy:

Discuss the current policy responses relating to the attainment gap in Scotland and ONE other country (comparison); heavily link with Curriculum for Excellence, Scottish government and educational documents – GIRFEC, SHANARRI? What does this show? Teaching practices and methods?

– Academic Literature:

Evaluate how academic literature addresses this topic; views? descriptions of better practice/responses from teachers and schools. Explore how this literature help us think about FUTURE educational options.

*Throughout the sections please remember to refer back to the question of why the attainment gap persists and what we can do about it and how we can help to create sustainable, equitable and productive futures. Link this not only with teacher practices and responsibility but the government too. CRITICALITY IS KEY.

LO3 How provision is planned for meeting individual needs across all areas of the EYFS

Word Count 3500w

Introduction 350w

Main Body 2800w

Conclusion 400-w

These elements are non-optional as these word counts form the structure 10% introduction and 10-15% conclusion.

Before you begin the written assignment 7 activity plans should be completed as these will be referenced throughout the work as App1. These are not optional as they form part of the title. However, the marking will be on the critical rationale which will focus on how these plans meet the needs of a specific child. The child does not need to have any additional needs such as SEN or EAL all children have individual needs because of age, gender, place in family etc.

Introduce the work using the title and LO, explain chosen child and the need for provision to cover all areas of the EYFS and address CoEL . Make sure you signpost to the activity plans as App1 from the start. (300w)

Content needs to cover the LO and the title and could include the following ideas:

Identify a wide range of needs this could include age, gender, developmentally appropriate provision, SEN, EAL, families in need, link to research. (LO1)

What does the EYFS say about meeting individual needs? Why should we? What is your role? How -Key person and work with parents and wider professionals. Reference these ideas do not just describe them.

In addition, How is provision planned and why – eg why continuous provision inside and out, accessibility, baby rooms, needs of two year olds, CFS, how does it meet the needs of this group of children ?. (LO3) Reference these aspects and think about historical legacies, indoors/ outdoors the EYFS/Ofsted requirements, SEN Code of Practice. Ensure all areas of EYFS are covered, prime/specific/CoEL are met. Use your activity plans to connect them with reading, research and references. Look at what has been covered in the module and your vast learning. Show this off!

Reflect on what, why and how throughout your work

Ensure that you use EHU Harvard referencing throughout and in the bibliography, proof read before submission. Easy marks can be lost and between  three areas on the mark grid –  referencing, language and structure. The marks lost can move work from one grade band to a lower band and from pass to fail.
