Evaluate and discuss the impact of the B.A.S.I.C. Coaching model in promoting leadership development among senior leaders within an educational setting.

Conduct a literature review into the issues faced by the GTRSB (Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen and Boater) community in accessing higher education, particularly within a Scottish context. Flesh out the previous report by selecting one or two themes to expand upon. Consider which themes might be considered as the most compelling barriers in accessing University for the group.

Individual Reflection on Experience

An individual reflection on the students’ experience on the Social Responsibility pathway.

For the pathway I tasked with conducting research in order to write a literature review and then convert it into a presentation to present to fellow staff members of the university involved with the widening access programs.

In semester 1 I completed task 1. In semester 2 I completed task 2 and task 3.

Task 1 – Conduct a literature review into the issues faced by the GTRSB (Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen and Boater) community in accessing higher education, particularly within a Scottish context.

Task 2 – Flesh out the previous report by selecting one or two themes to expand upon. Consider which themes might be considered as the most compelling barriers in accessing University for the group.

Consider expanding the conclusion section of the report to include recommendations to the University based on the findings (such as improvements that could be implemented, or worthwhile student support offerings that may benefit this group, etc.)

Task 3 – Prepare a presentation to be given virtually to Widening Access staff members, briefly summarising the report and highlighting the key findings and recommendations.

The essay will include:

Overview of the programme:

Roles and Responsibilities:

An overview of what you were assigned to do. Responsible for conducting my own research…

Work completed:

A more in-depth assessment of what was actually achieved. Task 1, 2, and 3.

Impact of the experience on student: development of skills and abilities, raising of awareness:

Conducting research and writing the literature review has enhanced my skills and prepped me for writing my dissertation next year. Before this I did not know much about the GTRSB communities through this I have learned a lot….

Impact of the student’s work on target groups and stakeholders:

Impact of my work has given the widening access programme and staff involved an insight into the issues these communities face and that more need to be done.

Problematic issues faced and how these were overcome:

Critical assessment of own performance:

Looking for evidence of learning and students honestly appraising what they could have done better and what they might do differently in the future

Recommendations:

What advice would you give students doing this option next year?

Which of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals did your work address? How successful was it in doing so?

Design your test and include any texts, samples of test items, rubrics, prompts and marking criteria in appendices. Justify your test design based on testing principles and research studies.

Degree programmes

The details of the curriculum and content of the programme are as follows:

Around 60 students are expected on the programme (divided into four groups). Students arrive with a range of IELTS scores (6.5 – 8.0) and already have the requirement to begin degree programmes in a number of different departments on completion of the pre-sessional. Despite the range of scores, however, many students will have very similar IELTS profiles, making it difficult to divide them into four groups. The first morning of the course will be given over to testing- which means up to 3 hours may be available for various tests and assessments.

Task detail

Design your test and include any texts, samples of test items [note that we do not need to see a complete test], rubrics, prompts and marking criteria in appendices. In the main assignment, justify your test design based on testing principles (aspects of validity, reliability, practicality etc.) and research studies. Make sure that you define concepts based on the literature and that you apply them to the context above.

Why is this topic/theory/approach important (drawing on research literature)? Explain this both in terms of its value to children and the subject/ discipline. What possible approaches exist to teaching this topic/approach (drawing on research literature)? How is this topic/approach currently taught in schools (drawing on experience and literature)? Why might this topic theory/approach not be taught at present?

ASSIGNMENT/COURSEWORK GUIDANCE

  • You should produce a six to eight lesson unit plan. A suggested format is given in appendix 2, but students may wish to adapt this.
  • This lesson plan should be accompanied by a research-informed scholarly justification of not more than 2500 words (not including references)
  • A possible structure for your scholarly justification is as follows (but students may wish to diverge from this.)
    • Why is this topic/theory/approach important (drawing on research literature)? Explain this both in terms of its value to children and the subject/ discipline.
    • What possible approaches exist to teaching this topic/approach (drawing on research literature)? How is this topic/approach currently taught in schools (drawing on experience and literature? Why might this topic theory/approach not be taught at present?
    • What difficulties/ pitfalls are associated with teaching and learning this topic/approach (drawing on literature)?
    • What significant research exists in your subject domain about this topic/approach and how would you incorporate it?  What significant educational research exists which might be relevant?
    • Why have you chosen the resources/ activities/ examples that you have?
    • How would you assess student understanding (drawing on research literature)?

What strategies will you use to build relationships with your students? How will you physically organize the classroom to ensure flexibility and accommodate the learning needs of all students including those with disabilities? Consider things such as the three zones of proximity and furniture.

The Learning Environment

Component 1:

You will explain your vision of the ideal learning environment for the age and subject you intend to teach (KINDERGARTEN) in a 3 – 5 page original paper (12 point font, double spaced) The paper should be professionally written and typed using correct grammar and spelling. Use the response template downloaded below to respond to each question.

-How do you create and maintain a mutually respectful and collaborative class of actively engaged learners? Include how you respond to student needs and incorporate student strengths and personal experiences.

-What strategies will you use to build relationships with your students?

-How will you physically organize the classroom to ensure flexibility and accommodate the learning needs of all students including those with disabilities? Consider things such as the three zones of proximity and furniture.

-Explain how your behavior management plan (see below) supports this vision.

Support the strategies you choose with research. For example, you could say something like “According to the work of Dr. I.M. Authority, primary students need structure to feel secure. Therefore, our day will be structured in the following ways…” Note that you will not pass the project if you do not properly cite your research. You can use any recognized style format (APA, MLA, Chicago) with which you are comfortable.

Component 2:

After fully explaining the environment you wish to create you will consider how you will accomplish this. You will create a behavior management plan using the template provided. Your behavior management system should help create and maintain the environment explained in the paper. The behavior management plan must include the following:

-Three to five positively worded rules that you can consistently enforce.

-Expectations (3 – 5) that encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and instill a culture of individual and group accountability.

-Procedures for at least 3 common classroom tasks (Examples: handing back graded work, turning in make-up work, handing out materials, going to lunch, sharpening a pencil, etc.) Once you are teaching you will have more than 3. These should be fully explained and able to be followed by the target age group. Include the expectations for student behavior.

Drawing on the evidence of your reading, with examples to support, in what ways do narratives of youth depicted support to explain the concept of youth and introduce the discourse? Why are young people seen as problematic?

Youth Participation and Identity

Assignment task:

In what ways, drawing upon your chosen topic as your focus, can you introduce the subject of youth:

  •  Issues related to the challenges for youth themselves, in terms of their identity formation and participation in society preparing for adulthood;
  •  The ideological perceptions of youth by the adult world, or external environment. (schools, youth setting, or policy makers)

The numbered sections, below, are designed to help you structure your response. Look at reading from each week and the Talis plug in to support you. Each week we have looked at topics and developed the discussion around the challenges of being a youth and how sub-cultures and different variables that intersect within the discourse help to explain and justify claims about some the issues that relate to the experience of being a young person in society, the opportunities and challenges faced.

  1. Drawing on the evidence of your reading, with examples to support, in what ways do narratives of youth depicted support to explain the concept of youth and introduce the discourse? Why are young people seen as problematic?  (approx. 750 words)
  2. Looking at key areas within the discourse, and with reference to relevant literature, present some of the issues faced when looking at youth identities and participation in society. How do schools, or youth settings, contribute to the issues or questions raised? Think about sub-cultures, intersectionality and theoretical perspective offered.(approx. 2000 words)
  3. Given some of the claims made in the literature and the evidence of practice, what implications may there be for education, as a result? What are your impressions and understanding about the key arguments you have engaged with ?(approx. 750 words)
