Addressing Bias and Promoting Equity in Early Childhood Classrooms
Bias and discrimination affect people from all walks of life. In the early childhood field, bias and discrimination are especially troublesome, as they can have long-term impacts that can continue to affect children through adulthood. Read Document #1: Madison Place Preschool Scenario prior to beginning Part II.
In three to four pages, complete the following:
Describe four strategies that you will use in order to address bias and promote equity among the young children in your classroom.
Explain why you chose these strategies, and how they will help address bias and promote equity.
Describe how you will implement these strategies to advocate for positive social change on behalf of the children in your classroom.
Describe one way you will partner with families and/or the community in your advocacy efforts.
Part III:
Access, Equity, and Promoting Change in Early Childhood Organizations
While advocating for access, equity, and change in early childhood classrooms is an important first step, early childhood settings support this advocacy effort on an organizational level.
In two to three pages, complete the following:
Describe how you will advocate for anti-bias curriculum in your early childhood setting or one in which you might work.
Explain why anti-bias curriculum should be adopted in in this setting.
Explain why access and equity at the organizational level are important to developing early childhood programs that help promote the growth and development of children, families, and communities.
Include a description of at least one organization with whom you might partner to promote access, equity, and social change for young children and families in your early childhood setting or one in which you might work, and explain why you have chosen this organization.
Part IV:
The Positive Impacts of Promoting Access, Equity, and Change
In two pages, describe the significant and lasting impacts that access and equity can have on children, families, communities, and a global society.
Reflect on all that you have learned about culturally reponsive teaching through your readings, discussions, and research throughout this course. You will develop a Teacher Training Presentation, reading and researching everything you can find on your topic to present to a teacher audience. You may select a new topic or a topic that you have already used in one of your previous papers or presentations within this course to further develop your understanding of a specific topic. Example topics could be: strategies for empowering students to share thoughts, delivering different forms of content through learning stations, integrating diverse work and study practices, fostering a sense of inclusion in the classroom, and understanding student learning needs and styles.
This presentation should be tailored for a new teacher orientation at the beginning of a school year, returning teacher beginning of the year professional development workshop, or possibly a presentation that you might deliver as part of a faculty meeting. You should think about the teacher audience (grade level, purpose of training, etc.) so you can customize your presentation to meet the needs of your audience.
The form or media you use (Voice over PowerPoint, YouTube, Screencaster, Office Mix, etc.) is entirely up to you as long as the information is presented in a professional manner. This should be a minimal of 30 minutes for your presentation.

For your Session Long Project (SLP), you will focus on the development of your literature review. Each SLP will require you to locate additional resources to strengthen your literature review.

Imagine that you are the new director of Little Flower Child Care Center. Review the “Overview of Early Childhood Care Center” document to learn more about your staff and their leadership style and temperament. You are faced with two concerns from parents regarding staff at your center:
Families are concerned about the ethical reliability of a staff member who was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI). The DWI arrest was published in the local newspaper and a constituent of parents voiced outrage. Families of the children in the center are calling for the teacher’s resignation. Another group of parents have voiced concerns about staff members who are texting on their mobile phones while caring for their children. You have issued a new policy banning cell phones during work hours, except in the case of emergency. Many of your staff members are unhappy with this change and have voiced their resistance to you during a weekly staff meeting. They say that it is an unfair rule that disrespects their personal freedom and family obligations.
