From your sources / research, identify 4-5 milestones in the history of your conflict. When was your topic the subject of public debate / discussion, and why? Was it the catalyst for legislation and/or court cases?

IRE Research Paper Section 1

Research Exercise 1.1: Essay “hook” or opener
Locate a recent example of your conflict surfacing in public discussion and describe what happened / tell the story. If there are any terms / concepts that might be unfamiliar to readers, provide an explanation / definition. Remember to include a citation for where you got the information. Good places to look for information: print or online news reports, TV broadcasts, social media postings or library databases such as US Newsstream.

Research Exercise 1.2: Explain the conflict
Write a paragraph explaining the conflict you are writing about. Consider including statistics to give readers a sense of the scope or seriousness of the topic and/or the number of people it affects. Good places to look for a concise description: Library databases such as Points of View Reference Center, Very Short Introductions, ProCon.org, or Independent Voices.

Research Exercise 1.3: Provide Timeline of major milestones or developments
From your sources / research, identify 4-5 milestones in the history of your conflict. When was your topic the subject of public debate / discussion, and why? Was it the catalyst for legislation and/or court cases? Follow its history.
Write several paragraphs detailing several of the major milestones / historical developments related to your conflict. Each paragraph should have at least 1 in-text (parenthetical) citation to indicate which source provided the information.

Research Exercise 1.4: Name the sides
From your sources / research, identify the two major sides of the conflict and summarize their position. You should also discuss exactly who (people, groups, etc.) is part of each side — does it break down by political party, age, geography, socio-economic group, religious affiliation, etc.?

For example, if you’re exploring the conflict around the Affordable Care Act, it was proposed by a Democratic president and supported by Democratic legislators. Who else supported it? Were there professional groups (e.g. medical providers, American citizens) that also supported it?

Note: you are looking for the most significant people or groups that comprise a side. You don’t need to provide an exhaustive list of everyone on a side, just the major players who are most involved in the debate.

Write a paragraph or two identifying each side and summarizing its major position (just the facts — you’ll look at why in the next section). Each paragraph should have at least 1 in-text (parenthetical) citation to indicate where you got the information.

At the end of your paragraphs, do a Works Cited entry for each source listed in your discussion.

Evaluate the causes of poor performance for both employees. Recommend solutions to enhance Noelle and Lizzy’s performance. Evaluate the responsibilities of the human resource department and those of the manager related to employee performance as presented in the scenario.

Determination of Performance

Performance management systems typically include the measurement of how work is done and the results of an individual’s efforts. When an employee does not have the knowledge or ability to do the job, then reward and feedback alone will not positively change performance outcomes. If the employee has the knowledge and ability, but is simply not motivated, then training and ongoing feedback will also be ineffective. Prior to beginning this assignment read Chapter 4 of the course text and the article.

Case Scenario:
Lizzy and Noelle are both sales associates in the cosmetics department of a large high-end retail store in Bloomington, Minnesota. Four years ago, a new training program was implemented for all new sales associates, which included detailed product information, customer service, upselling strategies, and role-playing with tailored feedback. Lizzy and Noelle have been working there for three and five years, respectively, and although Lizzy received this training and Noelle did not, their sales figures have always been very similar and very average.
Noelle has a clear conceptual understanding of the company’s vision and is excellent with the customers; she always has a positive attitude, is eager to attend to them, and has an intuitive sense of the customers’ needs. Most of her customer reviews have been positive and commented on her pleasant disposition and contagious laughter. However, a few mentioned that she was constantly running off to print descriptions of the products or to talk to other sales associates, and that this caused interruptions in the customers’ shopping experience. Although she gets along with nearly all the employees, there have been a few complaints that her excessive socializing makes her late for shifts and meetings.
Lizzy is more reserved than Noelle; she is less engaging with the customers and allows them to shop without bombarding them with too much information. When she notices that they are showing particular interest in a product she approaches and offers to answer any questions they may have. Lizzy seems to know every detail of every product. All of the salespeople depend on her to answer the toughest questions. Her communication style is very concise and matter of fact—no more and no less. Most people find it hard to tell if she is annoyed by all the questions people ask. Lizzy is punctual with everything, including leaving at precisely the time her shift ends. This often leads her to handing over valuable sales to colleagues which they appreciate.

Based on the scenario:
● Analyze the three determinants of performance (i.e., declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and motivation) for both Noelle and Lizzy, using specific examples provided in the scenario.
● Evaluate the causes of poor performance for both employees.
● Recommend solutions to enhance Noelle and Lizzy’s performance.
● Evaluate the responsibilities of the human resource department and those of the manager related to employee performance as presented in the scenario.

Who do you write to? Ask yourself the below questions to help work out who you should be targeting. Who has the power to make the change you are seeking? What is their current position on the issue?

Writing letter

Things to think about in your letter:
Who do you write to? Ask yourself the below questions to help work out who you should be targeting.
Who has the power to make the change you are seeking?
What is their current position on the issue?
Are they open to pressure from within Government? Are they open to external pressure and if so, from whom?
What are the best ways to influence them?

You may decide to write to secondary rather than the primary target i.e. not the person who has the decision-making power but someone else who can influence them. For example, you may write to an advisor or Member of Parliament asking them in turn to influence their Minister.

Once you’ve settled on a target, it will be easier to work out the tone and message of your letter. Contact by letter is most effective if it is based on a relationship with the person. Ideally you will keep writing to the same person. But be flexible – if the situation changes or you are having no luck with one contact, you may choose to lobby someone else.

Provide an overview of the work you have analyzed, briefly describing the main points and your reaction to the author’s claim. Compose a thesis that you will support with evidence throughout the essay.

Communication through writing

Overview
The ability to communicate a message through writing is essential in any career. Effective writing shapes and informs the opinions of its readers. The writing process can be intimidating; however, the more you work with it, the more comfortable the process becomes.

Prompt
For this project, you will build upon the outline of the essay you have developed while incorporating your instructor’s feedback. Use the prompt questions below to help you develop your draft. You will pull out quotes and paraphrases from your selected reading and write summaries that you will use to support your analysis.

When you are done responding to the prompts below, you will have the first draft of your critical analysis essay. In the following module, you will complete a revision activity to further improve this draft.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

I. Introduction

The introduction of your essay is where readers will learn what your essay is about. Do not give all your information away here. Instead, give readers a sample of what is to come and what you will be supporting with evidence in the body of the essay. Do not forget to review your outline to make sure you briefly cover all of the key points you identified. If your claim and key points have changed since then, it is okay! For your new ideas, seek feedback from your instructor or writing resources available through SNHU.

Provide an overview of the work you have analyzed, briefly describing the main points and your reaction to the author’s claim.
Compose a thesis that you will support with evidence throughout the essay. This statement will give direction to your essay and should be well thought out.

II. Body

The body is your opportunity to support your evaluation of the author’s argument. Ensure that your thoughts and evidence are clear and easy to read and understand.

Be sure to write organized paragraphs that clearly state their main idea and move logically from one to the other.
Your body paragraphs should support your thesis by combining thoughts and ideas with evidence or key points from the selected reading. There is no such thing as a right or wrong evaluation; the key is how well your analysis is supported and the quality of the evidence used.

III. Conclusion

Think of the conclusion paragraph as a review of your analysis. Use this section to restate your evaluation and remind readers of your supporting evidence. Think of this paragraph as your last chance to prove your point.

Briefly summarize the main points that helped form your analysis. This section should consist of a brief review of your main ideas.
Draw conclusions based on your evidence.
Use evidence that you have found to wrap up the essay in a meaningful way that relates to your audience.

Discuss the ways in which this progression is changing the landscape of our society as we are increasingly reliant on our devices and what we are offered through our online immersion.

English 102 Prompts

Essay II
Essay I will be approximately 3 pages in length, double spaced and proper MLA formatting with internal citations. Students must demonstrate the ability to quote, paraphrase, summarize, and cite sources correctly. Source material will be the course readings (Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone”, Sherry Turkle’s “The Tethered Self” and Michel Foucault’s piece “Panopticism”) and 4 academic sources of the student’s selection that will analyze the issues within the course readings. Students will choose one of the prompts to attend to in their essay development.

Prompt 1
In Sherry Turkle’s piece “Always-On/Always-On-You: The Tethered Self” she posits that we are immersed in a new form of sociality, a changing communal space that comes from our increasing reliance on our devices. With this comes a new understanding of intimacy and need for validation. In “Generation Like” we see young adults seeking the external validation their constant presence online creates, with little understanding of the implications on their internal sense of self. In this prompt, discuss the ways in which this progression is changing the landscape of our society as we are increasingly reliant on our devices and what we are offered through our online immersion.

Hints: Think about selfies and why they are taken and posted. Think of how one’s online presence is viewed as an extension of their self, and how that has consequences when presented in a public space. Think about how social media sites function in the society and the influence they have. Think about how “numbers” are the new currency for social media “influencers”.
