First, you’ll have a chance to read through possible sources. When you are ready, you’ll download the Mini Assignment 2 Template. In Mini Assignment 2, you will complete a series of tasks that help you understand your chosen source. You did these tasks for the Critique Essay during the first half of the semester. In later units, we’ll develop the critique of this source using research.

“Research,” for our purposes, means to find and explore sources that illuminate a primary source–the argument or narrative you select, and enable you to answer a central question(s) about that primary source.

In this way, the Research-Driven Critique Essay is different from the kind in which you learn about and write on a topic. Your focus is not so much the topic itself, but the way the main source is written/ techniques the author uses to convey their claim. You are using research to write a more informed response to that source.

Analyze the origins and history of a specific musical instrument. Analyze the origins of a particular musical style (excluding, Jazz, Country, and Hip-hop).

Expository Research Essay

Write a five-paragraph expository* research essay (Introductory paragraph + three Body paragraphs + Concluding paragraph) on one of the following topics. All topics should be narrowed to a specific point (thesis). The essay must include a minimum of three secondary sources (looking for peer-reviewed journals/articles instead of google sites), but direct quotes cannot take up more than 10% of the essay. The essay should be between 800-1000 words in length.

General topics:

Analyze the origins and history of a specific musical instrument.

Analyze the origins of a particular musical style (excluding, Jazz, Country, and Hip-hop).

* An expository essay aims to be objective, but it does not have to make an original argument. Rather, it aims to explain something (e.g., a process or idea) in a clear, concise way.

* Cite all secondary sources in MLA style.

Focusing on the chapter you selected to read, evaluate the merit (or lack of merit) of this analysis? Does it enhance the readers critical thinking and therefore enhance our ability to contribute to an effective solution?

Bargained

The chapter is called Bargained. Marc Lamont Hill is trying to get us to look below the surface of tragic stories. Instead of just looking at a tragedy like Michael Browns killing and allowing our implicit biases or pity to form our judgement, he is forcing us the examine the historical background of both the legal policies and the institutions that shaped the young mans life outcomes (housing, schooling, economic opportunities, policing practices, legal status, governmental policy, ect) in order to get a much fuller and complex picture of the person (like Mike Brown) or the social situation (like an urban riot or the water crisis in Flint). Focusing on the chapter you selected to read, evaluate the merit (or lack of merit) of this analysis? Does it enhance the readers critical thinking and therefore enhance our ability to contribute to an effective solution?
