How can we fix the financial aid problem?

Determine the style, tone, level of formality, etc. that is typical for that publication.

For this assignment, your goal is to share your position and “join the conversation” on the topic you have been researching all quarter by preparing your writing for print or online publication. Readers of commentaries want to grasp the issue you are presenting and understand your angle right away. You must make your point quickly and memorably, with an ultimate goal of convincing readers to agree with you, act in some way, and/or change their minds

In this assignment, you will continue writing about your ongoing research topic, but you will modify it to meet the various formatting and style needs of your chosen publication. This does not mean that you can just take a 2,000-word paper and cut off 1,000 words; instead, you must demonstrate that you have made careful choices to revise your more academic writing to fit another medium targeted toward a different audience.

This assignment requires you to:

Choose a publication to which you will write your commentary from the specified list of options below (consult your professor for approval if there is a different publication you have in mind that is not on the list).
Determine the style, tone, level of formality, etc. that is typical for that publication.
Analyze the target audience for the publication, and consider how their needs dictate the writing choices you will make.
Write a Commentary Article between 700 – 1000 words using the same topic you’ve been researching all quarter.
Use APA format – it is likely that the publication you choose will not use APA format; however, since learning APA is a key component of this class, we will continue to use it here.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to consult the interactive Media Bias chart introduced earlier in this class. Each site listed above has a different placement on this chart. Some lean left, some lean right. It is imperative that you analyze the publication you choose and align your purpose to best meet the publication type and style, in addition to the target audience. This requires you to spend some time analyzing the publication itself (review articles, investigate the publication’s mission, read policies and guidelines for submitting opinion pieces). If there is a publication you would like to write toward and it is not on the list, talk with your professor about its viability. Your professor must approve any publications not on the list.

  1. Peter Pronovost, Senior Vice President for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins Medicine, said, “We need to start talking about this.” What would you say is the significance of this statement? In other words, why is this meaningful in your opinion?
  2. Briefly describe an uncomfortable workplace situation in which you witnessed a failing on the part of the organization. Did you speak up? Why or why not? (no judgment here! 😊)
  3. Read a few other posts and respond to at least one.

Part 1 (3 points):  Provided a complete response to questions #1 and #2.

Part 2 (2 points): Read the posts of your peers. Choose one classmate and provide additional insight to their post. That insight can be:

  • a personal experience you share that might provide context for your peers comments
  • OR you can respectfully disagree and provide a rationale for why disagree
  • OR  you can add insight by advancing your peer’s point, adding something new and relevant to what the peer shared

Just saying, “Good job” or “Sorry you are dealing with that”, does not count as a response. Try to reply to  one person who does not already have a reply to ensure everyone gets feedback

Was Goodman Brown a hero or not? and choose 3 of the 12 stages of Joseph Campbell’s stages of the monomyth (Hero’s Journey) to use as justification for your decision

The main question you will need to answer for your argumentation/persuasion essay is: Was Goodman Brown a hero or not? and choose 3 of the 12 stages of Joseph Campbell’s stages of the monomyth (Hero’s Journey) to use as justification for your decision. Also, when judging Goodman Brown’s behavior, you must take into consideration the setting of the story. Remember that the story takes place during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692 in colonial New England where Puritanism was the main ideology of the land. The essay should be between 5-6 pages in length. Your paper will need to be double spaced and follow MLA guidelines. The last page of your document should have a works cited page listing all of the sources you used to complete your paper. This is a formal argumentation/persuasion essay and should be written in third person. In addition, always refer to Nathanial Hawthorne because this is a formal academic essay.
