Purpose: This assignment will enable you to discover a short story’s use of elements such as theme, irony, metaphor, and symbolism. You will conduct a close reading of a short story and discuss the author’s use of these devices in his or her structuring and composition of the content. Applying a close reading and composing a literary analysis will prepare you for the many texts that you will read, summarize, and discuss in the workplace.
Task:
Write an essay analyzing one of our stories from this Unit that discusses why and how specific symbols, metaphors, or uses of irony are used to depict one or two of the themes from Unit 1 in a particular way. Your essay should incorporate details and quotes from the story (using parenthetical documentation with the author’s name), and you should use your own words to elaborate on the meanings of the details and quotes you use as evidence. Review your feedback from the Unit 3 Discussion on Analyzing a Short Story, as well as the posts and feedback of your classmates. Follow these steps:
You will closely read your chosen story, considering its themes, characters, organization, dialogue, and other literary elements. Take notes to outline later.
Format: You are required to use MLA style for all writing assignments. Proper MLA citation and a correctly formatted Works Cited page (12-point font, Times New Roman, double spacing, Last name and page number on each page, etc.). Please refer to the Purdue Online Writing Lab for MLA formatting and style guide.

Each student will write a 5-6 page research paper on an emerging/re-emerging communicable disease using at least 5 or more current credible sources, APA format, double-spaced, and 12 point font. (100 points) Include a cover page, abstract, introduction, specific details of the disease (see below), and a conclusion. The rubric provided will help guide you through the development and implementation of the paper.
Paper should include:
Disease description: Describe the disease including details on symptoms and significance of the disease.
History of disease: Include a clear description of the history of the disease including origins, significant individuals involved in the discovery of the disease, and the impact of the disease.
Reasons for emergence/data: Include multiple data points (DALY, mortality, morbidity, and risk factors) supporting the significance of the disease finding its way into the US and/or global population. Discuss how the disease is measured. Fully describe the reasoning behind the re-emergence of the disease (if applicable).
Methods of control/prevention: Identify multiple methods available for the control/prevention of the disease. Discuss surveillance of the disease and how it contributes to disease control.
References: Citations and references should be in proper APA format. Ample sources are cited. All claims should be supported with a professional reference.

Put in the conclusions any possible improvements that could be made to the lab. A very quick overall summary of your results can be added. Stay focused on your experiment but any referenced facts about wind turbines, efficiencies etc. can be added in the conclusions. Do NOT copy and paste from the sources or your team mates. Plagiarism is considered academic misconduct.
Your report should be only one word document. Include your data sheets in the report but not as a separate Excel document. If you wish, you may copy and paste the individual tables from the data sheet into the specific tasks rather than attaching to the end of the report. It is highly likely a part of your report will be missed on grading if the report is in two documents. Do not expect the instructor to search for the pieces of the report. The final report should be submitted on Blackboard.

To this end, the syllabus should contain introductory statement that is roughly 4-6 paragraphs in length. This statement should appear somewhere so that it is one of first things a visitor to your web site sees. The weeks and their respective themes should be sequenced in a logical way. There should be a basic logic for why one week’s theme follows the previous week’s theme. *You will explain the logic behind your ordering/sequencing in your reflective letter (see above).

You should have a good mix of secondary and primary sources—at least one primary or “multimedia” source per week, and at least three secondary sources per week. While some of your secondary sources may be op-eds and editorials, a larger percentage of them should be scholarly or peer-reviewed and found using the UM-Dearborn library. You will discuss your rationale for why you chose the sources you did in your reflective letter.
