analyze values and theories of Ethical and Social Responsibility

Instructions
Students will complete 5 page paper that analyzes values and theories of Ethical and Social Responsibility (Learning Outcome 3) in one’s own social and academic practice. This essay will require APA/MLA format with two sources and four citations.
The paper above is different from others that we have done this term. It is different in the following two ways:
1) It is different in theme. You do not choose your theme from one of the twenty topics listed in the Week #1 material. You must look back into your life and find a story (either about yourself or someone influential in your life) where an ethical or social responsibility lesson was learned.
2) This story requires citations. You must research the theme (value) that will be highlighted in your story. You are required to find two sources of information (articles, books) about this value. You are required to include four citations in your paper.

Is it ethical to hold animals captive, or is simply a form of entertainment?

Theme: Captivity of animals
Claim – Is it ethical to hold animals captive, or is simply a form of entertainment?
Essay: Blackfish –
Watch the Blackfish documentary. You will then gather other evidence for an argumentative essay regarding the captivity of sea mammals (or animals).

Blackfish ~

Blackfish is a documentary that reveals the grim side of marine parks such as Sea World. Whether the claims presented in the documentary are completely accurate, or not, one can definitely debate if these sea mammals should be held captive or live freely, in the wild.

Time to debate: Carefully consider both sides of the issue, choose a side and support your position in an argumentative essay. Debate the ethics of capturing sea mammals for the purpose of entertainment or leaving them to live freely in their natural habitat. Both sides of the issue have merit, but you must choose one. One possible claim could be: The public should not support marine park programs because these programs use inhumane practices to separate killer whales from their natural habitat and social groups, which is extremely detrimental to the well-being of the mammal. You may even choose to find evidence that supports captivity of killer whales. Example: Marine parks should be supported; not only do these programs provide memorable family entertainment, they provide environmental education, and teach appreciation for sea mammals.

Another option is to develop your own claim related to the captivity of animals.

This essay should:

>clearly identify your position in your claim/thesis.

> discuss a counterargument and a refutation

>provide ample support from additional sources; the documentary is not enough (include 4 or more sources).

>be typed, MLA format – double space, 12 point font, Times New Roman

> be a minimum of 4 pages

> include a Works cited page
