Distinguish which sections are essential and which are optional noting when such elective items should be included.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has set the standard for formatting research in the social and behavioral fields which, of course, includes education. Therefore, it is paramount that education researchers become familiar with APA style as early in their research efforts as possible. Individuals often get confused that APA format is solely a consideration when citing resources however, it is critical to note that APA formatting exists for entire research works from the title page to the references pages. Also, APA provides ethical standards for research including how to avoid plagiarism.

Be aware that the APA manual indicates that researchers use of 12-point font in professional writing as well as the use of a serif font such as Times New Roman. APA format states that paragraphs be indented .5 -.7 inches, and two spaces should be inserted following terminal punctuation. It also notes that “uniform margins of at least 1 in. (2.54 cm) at the top, bottom, left and right of every page.” It’s good to get into the habit of formatting your document this way.

Your Unit 8 Assignment should be a formal, academic essay of 5-6 paragraphs, between two and ½ and three pages long, double spaced (excluding title page and References page). The paper should inform your audience about a specific, recent, and researchable change, either positive or negative, in your field of study. Your goal is to explain to your audience either what caused this change to occur or to analyze the effects this change has had on the field, without taking a position, arguing for a change, or offering solutions.

As the final draft version of the paper you began in Unit 5, your Unit 8 Assignment should demonstrate your ability to do the following:

Focus on a single, specific, relevant, recent, and researchable change, either positive or negative, in your general field of study. Please note that technology is too broad as a topic, but a specific technological change like the increased use of cloud computing is a change; obesity is not a change, but the increase in obesity rates among children is a change.
Establish a clear thesis about this topic that focuses on either what caused the change or what effect this change has had on the field. You may not analyze both cause and effect.
Develop your thesis with specific observations, details, analysis, and research information
Avoid taking a position, making recommendations, or addressing solutions-the paper must be an objective, analytical essay that instead only analyzes the causes or effects of this change.
Organize your information logically, using clear transitions
Use appropriate formal third person language, avoiding first and second person language
Integrate 3-4 relevant and reliable, peer reviewed secondary sources and demonstrate the ability to summarize and paraphrase source information rather than relying on quotes
Apply current APA citations format to credit any and all uses of source information, both when you use the source information within the paragraphs (in text citations) and in an alphabetically listed References page
Apply revision, editing, and proofreading strategies to substantially revise your final draft, demonstrating substantial revision of your Unit 6 Assignment and Unit 8 Discussion Board post.
Apply current APA formatting expectations (title page, double spaced paragraphs, regular one-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, for example)

Create a text that demonstrates a grasp of analysis (arguing an interpretation).

Assignment: Create a text that demonstrates a grasp of analysis (arguing an interpretation). To accomplish a strong argumentative focus, make sure your thesis is supported by strong examples and clear explanation (make sure what you say can be debated). For the analysis, break the chosen text down into its various parts and examine how they work individually or as a coherent piece. Choose your quotes carefully and explain how they support your interpretation and argument.

Be sure to focus on the author’s credibility/expertise/authority. Do some outside research on his ideas and claims. Did you find that his ideas mesh with other authors in the field and is he credible? You will need to use a secondary source in your support paragraphs. The secondary source is your opportunity to connect the author’s ideas to what others are saying. Comparison or contrast will help you to create synthesis in your paragraphs for this essay.

Requirements:

Create an Introduction/summary (free of bias and quotes) that prepares readers for your analysis of the book. Be sure to include the author’s name and title of the piece at the start of your summary.

Create a one sentence thesis statement that demonstrates your analysis and argument.

Create topic sentences that support your chosen thesis statement (be sure to use analysis terms and connect back to your thesis)

Incorporate quotes from the primary and secondary texts to support your topic sentence claims. Secondary sources must, any sources other than the book, need to come from the library databases.

Be sure to explain your quotes (how they prove your analysis) and not just drop them in for filler/summary.

Include traditional paragraph structure.

Create a conclusion that restates your main points

Format the text according to MLA guidelines

Include a works cited page

Be sure to edit/ proofread your material for clarity
