Many of the stories we are reading deal with issues of tradition. For some characters, tradition stifles personal growth and development; for others, it helps establish a sense of self-worth. Think about how tradition affects the characters and plots we have encountered in our assigned readings. Using one of the assigned stories, write an essay in which you examine how an author uses literary devices to create a specific theme about tradition.
Some possibilities include (but are not limited to) how tradition prohibits personal growth, how tradition connects people to others, how tradition can create a hostile and/or unhealthy community, how tradition distort or confuse reality.
Many of the stories we are reading focus on family relationships. Whether the focus is controlling mothers, resentful daughters, or overbearing fathers, many of the stories deal with the various issues associated with family. Guidelines:you must use only one of the assigned stories as the primary text for this assignment. Do not choose one of the stories from the “Working with Literature” section unless it is specifically named on the schedule. You may choose from “I Stand Here Ironing,” “Two Kinds,” “Everyday Use,” “My Son, the Fanatic,” “The Yellow Wallpaper,” “The Lottery,” “Rocket Night,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” “The Story of an Hour,” or “The Storm.”

Your essay must be at least 1000 but no more than 1200 words (three to four pages). Essays that do not meet the word count requirement will not earn a passing grade.
Essays must be in written in MLA format and include a works cited page. Errors will result in a 5-25 point deduction.

Select one of the essay prompts below. Your answer to the prompt question should be formulated into a singular thesis/argument about the readings you will discuss. Your thesis should be placed at the end of your introductory paragraph.
Your essay should include two of the following authors from the Course Schedule readings: Faulkner, Welty, Pirandello, Tan, Poe Ellison, Whitecloud, Chopin, and Updike. Place quotation marks around titles that are mentioned in your discussion.

1. Characters
In the readings some characters are portrayed positively or negatively or both. Think about the characteristics, details, and actions the author uses to elicit such responses in the reader. Explain how you feel the author is portraying the character and the reasons for such a portrayal.
2. Setting
Closely examine the setting of two readings. What are the main locations and how does the author use such devices as description, imagery, background information, and other details to enliven the story? Do the characters and settings work together effectively to make a convincing story? Discuss the techniques used by the author to make the settings authentic.
3. Time Period
How are two particular writings shaped by the period in which they were written? How do the characters, actions, themes relate to the setting? Consider the ways in which the characters are depicted, their beliefs portrayed, and how the issues that they must contend with are particular to the period.
4. Gender
How are male and female characters portrayed in two of the readings? Are choices limited by gender, and/or does gender influence choices. Explore how gender affects plot and character development in the readings and how would events change if the events were to take place today?
5. Detail
After a close examination of two readings, find an important detail in each that piques your interest. This can be a passage, pivotal event, or significant symbol. Examine the detail more carefully and discuss why it exists in the story and its importance to the overall theme or plot.
6. Conflict
Examine the nature of conflict in two of the readings. What struggles does the main character encounter. You might consider the question of identity of a particular character or group; issues of assimilation and acculturation; identity transformations.
