What does this product tell us about the ideals and values of American culture? (or) How does this product relate to the contested values and beliefs of American culture?

Our first paper asks the guiding question what does your chosen product reveal about American values and beliefs? Incorporating concepts and ideas from our course readings and a range of academic and popular sources into your analysis, this paper challenges writers to closely examine the link between the product and American cultural values and beliefs.

Here are a few key requirements to keep in mind:
o The essay must be a 1800 word minimum study of how a popular American consumer product functions as a sign of U.S. cultural beliefs, values and ideals.
o You must use the course readings in nearly every body paragraph. This means you must apply concepts from the course readings in your paper as a form of support for your thinking. But don’t quote excessively. See sample essay.
o The essay must be presented in MLA format with parenthetical citations and a correctly and carefully formatted works cited list documenting ideas/ quotes/and paraphrases from course readings and sources.
o Pick a product that has at least 5 different iterations (tv ads, web pages, social media ads, magazine ads, product reviews, blogs)

How does the main character try and forge a new identity?

As you read the story, consider the following: how does the main character try and forge a new identity? What lessons about identity does he or she learn along the way?

What values does Miller assume and how might they be played out?

Essay #1 – Response to Dark Night of the Soul
Richard Miller’s essay begins with events have indirectly and directly affected your schooling life. As the essay builds into questions – questions for teachers and students at all levels – the violence and alienation remain, changing how we think about what reading and writing might do, might teach us. “I have doubts, you see,” Miller writes, “doubts silently shared by many who spend their days teaching others the literate arts.” These doubts end in the provocative question: “What might the literate arts be said to be good for?”
Write an essay which takes up this question in 4 pages (double-spaced, 1’’ margins, New Times Roman, 12 pt). Provide your own answer in contexts you develop such as your range of reference, people like you, the group you feel at this moment in your schooling life best prepared to speak for.
While your experience outside the text is important, your dialogue with Miller – conversing with him on his terms, his concerns, his examples and conclusions – is also important. This assignment is what is called a “passage-based focused” essay. I have given you the passage I want you to use. For more on this kind of writing, see chapter 3 in Writing Analytically. This should not turn into “I disagree/agree” and also Miller’s ideas should not be thoughtlessly applied to any one particular school, UNG or otherwise.
Questions to consider:
What values does Miller assume and how might they be played out?
What are the contexts to his argument and your experience?
How might you structure your essay to reflect the idea of “a dark night of the soul?”
How might you use not just the personal but social issues like curriculum reform to make your point?
Where does your perspective easily interact and rub against Miller? How do you resolve those issues for the purposes of this assignment?
Remember, you do not need to answer all these questions or in this order. Perhaps choose one or two and make connections between them to get started. Concentrate on those elements of his essay you feel are particularly important and useful to your project. Remember the “text” as a space for your own invention process we have talked about in class.
Do not assume your reader has read Miller’s essay. Be sure you present Miller through uses of quotes, explanation, and paraphrase that suit the purpose of your essay. Do work with his words. [adapted from Ways of Reading, pg. 445]

What specific environmental area interests you, and why?

During this course, you will prepare a 2,000- to 2,500-word research paper on an environmental subject with ethical and philosophical implications. Each Module contains an assignment that builds up to the final paper draft, due in Module 5. In the first research paper assignment, you will identify your topic and write both a topic proposal and two drafts of your thesis statement. The two drafts should represent two unique attempts to state your basic position/conclusion, along with the supporting reasons/evidence.

For your research paper subject, you may choose any specific argument relating to a current issue in environmental ethics, although it must be different from the essay topics in both Module 2 and Module 4. Take care to select a topic that is manageable by doing some preliminary work. You must be able to relate it to both philosophical and environmental ethics. In Module 2, you will incorporate at least one philosophical theory (e.g., utilitarianism) and one environmental theory (e.g., biocentrism) in your argument. Note that you may use one theory to support your argument or to argue against another theory.

For inspiration, search the DesJardins and Pojman texts (in each, look at the table of contents, or skim ahead to later sections), and explore the GREEN-R and EnviroLink web sites (found in this Module’s Additional Resources). For instance, look at one or more of the ten major areas in GREEN-R’s “Browse Issues and Topics” section. Each of these areas is further divided into 15 or more categories, and each category is full of possible research topics. To find more research information, visit CCCOnline Library’s Doing Research from a Distance.

In this assignment, concentrate on picking out your topic and drafting your thesis. In Module 2, you’ll work on specific theoretical elements and begin your research.

Instructions
View the Essay Writing Guide. Within it, read #2 and #3 in the section “What a Philosophy Essay Is” for detailed guidelines on thesis statements.
Pick a topic for your research paper.
Write one to two paragraphs (125 words or more) explaining your planned topic. What specific environmental area interests you, and why? What ethical and philosophical questions can be asked about it? How could you apply deontology, teleology, or utilitarian philosophy to it? Label these paragraphs “Topic Proposal.”
Write a thesis statement that is no longer than 3 sentences on your chosen topic and label it “Thesis Draft 1.”
Check your thesis statement draft to make sure it is not “problematic” according to the information in the Essay Writing Guide.
Revise your thesis statement and label it “Thesis Draft 2.”

Respond to this discussion topic with one paragraph describing how this task might have helped you or why it did not help you in organizing your thoughts for next assignment

The link for the spider diagram is as follow;
https://www.the-organic-mind.com/spider-diagrams.html
To use the spider idagram, please print out the attached file, Watermarking_Technique_in_Cloud_Computing_to_Enhance_Cloud_Data_Security. Then place a piece of paper in front of you and complete the tasks listed below.
Task:
Write your idea/title/topic/thesis in the center of a piece of paper. Draw a circle around it. For the purposes of this exercise, you will use the topic of your paper which is the attached file.
Draw a “leg” from the central “body” of your topic (attached file) towards the top right hand corner of the page. Label this “Leg” with the first topic/category that you dealt with in your paper.
• Add more legs moving clockwise around the page until all the sections have been included, with the final one being somewhere near the top left of the page.
• Now divide each “leg” up into smaller “legs” with all the points that you made in each section. (Again work clockwise from the top left so that the sequence of ideas is maintained).
• Finally, please be sure that one section is devoted to identifying any gaps or niches in the research literature in your synthesis of sources essay (literature review),
• You may have to redraw your spider diagram several times until you find a structure that works for you. Make sure that you find a proposal structure that suits the needs of your Niches and Gaps paper.
• Respond to this discussion topic with one paragraph describing how this task might have helped you or why it did not help you in organizing your thoughts for next assignment, which is to expand the same paper (Watermarking_Technique_in_Cloud_Computing_to_Enhance_Cloud_Data_Security) with more sources (references).
