Outcomes you should achieve by completing this assignment

Organize information clearly in an explanatory essay (Course outcomes 1 and 2)
Use an introduction paragraph with a thesis statement and a concluding paragraph to frame an essay (Course outcomes 1 and 2)
Demonstrate accurate grammar and mechanics in writing (Course outcome 3)
Topic

You began your research project by reading an article from the news about a current issue or event in society. Your goal in this essay is to explain to your professor how the research and writing you have done for your research project changed your understanding of that issue or event. You will explain what changes occurred in your understanding and how those changes occurred.

Here are some questions you can consider in developing ideas for your essay:

What changes occurred in your understanding?
Do you know more about the issue/event now than you did before? (Probably!)
Do you look at the issue/event from a different perspective following your research?
Have you reconsidered opinions or assumptions that you held at the beginning of the semester?
How did those changes occur?
Which sources from your research had the greatest effect on your understanding?
Did the process of writing about your topic affect the way you thought about it?
What role did interaction with your classmates and/or professor play in your understanding of your topic?
Organizing and supporting your essay

Your essay must include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

The introduction should gain your reader’s attention, orient the reader to your topic, and state your thesis.

The body of the essay should include focused body paragraphs in support of your thesis statement. There are various ways you might choose to organize information in the body of your essay. Here are some suggestions you can consider:

You might focus each body paragraph on a step of the research process and how that step affected your understanding of the issue/event.
You might focus each body paragraph on your understanding at a particular time relative to the research process (before, during, after).
You might focus each body paragraph on a particular aspect of the issue/event and explain how your understanding of that aspect developed during your research.
The essay’s conclusion should answer the question “So what?” by placing the essay’s explanations into a larger context. To accomplish this, you can consider addressing one or more of these questions:

Will your current understanding of your event/issue affect your future actions or decisions? If so, how?
What lessons—about interpreting current events, about your field of study, about the research process—can be drawn from the experience of completing the research project?
Is research of the sort done in WRTG 112 a worthwhile activity? Why or why not?
Point of view

First person (I/me/my) is appropriate in this assignment, but second person (you/your) should be avoided.

Formatting your assignment

Incorporate these elements of APA style:

Use one-inch margins.
Double space.
Use an easy-to-read font between 10-point and 12-point.
Include a title page with the title of your paper, your name, and the name of your school.

This paper is supposed to be completely first person and should be about my experience on researching and writing my research paper and what I learned from this journey. Below I will be attaching my research paper and other discussion posts to aid the writing process. I am not looking for any sources, but if you do, you can just use the same citations from my essay.
I really need this to sound personable, yet sophisticated, I really need at least a B on this paper to pass my class. Thank you. I hope that the essay is easier to write since I provided all of the necessary sources to complete the essay. Thank you so much again

Reflect on how deep knowledge words and morphemic analysis can be a useful study tool and or test-taking technique. (3 to 5 sentences or 100 to 150 words.)

Refer to a course syllabus and identify this week’s assigned reading for A&P (or another class). Choose a chapter from this week’s assigned reading and list the deep-knowledge words from the chapter on the Vocabulary Self-Assessment ChartPreview the document. Most deep-knowledge words are in bold. You must have a minimum of 15 deep-knowledge words.

For each word, rate your understanding of the word: associative, comprehensive or generative. Fill in the box with today’s date to show your understanding as of today.

Any word that you only have an associative meaning of, use the steps in the morphemic analysis. (find at least 2 in your reading)

a. Underline the root, circle the prefixes and suffixes.

b. Look for words you know that are similar and have a common root.

c. Use this word in a sentence. Make sure the sentence is specific enough to show the true meaning of the word. Does your sentence make sense?

d. Reassemble the word and note how you can remember it, write it on your paper

For any word that you have a generative knowledge of, you must provide substantial evidence that you can use the word in the correct context and with the correct meaning by writing an original sentence on the vocabulary self-assessment chart.

Over the next few days, monitor your progress mastering these words by noting the date on the chart when you reached the generative level of understanding. When you have reached the generative level of understanding, check the word off in the progress column of the assessment chart.

Poetry
“Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see the blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
B Dylan Thomas (1914 – 1953)
“Psalm of Life”
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream! –
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,–act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882)

Policy Change in the United States Justice System

Essay 3: Proposing Change Within an American System or Institution

Background: For Essay 2, you learned about and critiqued one specific American system or institution in light of its racial/systemic bias. Essay 3 will ask you to pivot. You will focus on your Essay 2 topic, but rather than critiquing, you will propose change with the intention to persuade. Worth up to 150 Essay points.

Prompt: In an essay of at least 2,000 words, respond to this prompt: Propose some type of meaningful, reasonable change in policy or procedure as a means of mitigating or reducing racial bias within a specific American system or institution. Use at least 4 credible sources, at least one of which originates from OneSearch. (Do not use a dictionary or encyclopedia as a source.) Include a works-cited page, which does not factor into the word-count.

Audience: Write to persuade a skeptical audience by “selling them” on your idea and its effectiveness. How will this inform the approach and the rhetorical tools you use in your argument? (Review elements of persuasion in your textbook.)

Some considerations/paragraph ideas:

  • What level/who is responsible to implement this plan/policy/practice? (local, state, national)
  • What would such a plan/policy/practice entail (funding, time, training, among many other factors)?
  • What would that look like and how might it be achieved?
  • Who is the intended group for implementation? Would it affect other groups/people?
  • Timeframe for implementation?
  • How might this plan/policy/practice gain support?
  • Any successful comparisons or examples, or reasonable speculation about its potential effectiveness?
  • Potential downsides and/or limitations of this plan/policy/practice?
  • Counterparagraph: What about….? Yes, but…?

Warning: Stay focused on the prompt! While your intro will contextualize the issue and your body paragraphs may refer to some of the problems, in this essay you are not critiquing and evaluating the system or institution. Your primary task is to propose reasonable, even achievable, solutions and to convince skeptical readers of their necessity/importance.

Assignment details:

  1. To support your ideas, use at least 4 credible, approved sources. While you do not have to use an academic or peer reviewed source, at least one of your sources must originate from OneSearch. Do not use a dictionary or encyclopedia. Again, all of your sources must be approved by me before you proceed. If you find new sources during your research process, do not move forward with them until I’ve given the okay.
  2. Intro and thesis: Keep it under ¾ of the first page.
  3. Include more than three body paragraphs. For this particular essay, I suggest at least six. One body paragraph should address opposing views. All body paragraphs should include at least one source, well integrated and cited. Rule of thumb: if your body paragraph reached one full page or more, see where you can break it into two paragraphs.
  4. MLA page-layout: 1” margins; 12-pt. TNR font; double-spaced from start to finish. Include a title and paginate. Use MLA formatting when introducing and citing sources and format the sources in your essay as they are formatted on the works cited page.
  5. Provide a correctly-formatted works cited page that includes all of the sources used in your final draft. The works cited list does not count toward the word-count minimum.
  6. Turnitin score should be under 12%. You will get a chance to test-run one of your final drafts and lower your score, if needed, before submitted your essay.
  7. Your analysis should be written with college prose; that is, using complete sentences, correctly spelled words, and lacking grammatical errors. It should show evidence of having been proofread, too (no typos).

Discuss the implications of being a first generation college student. What are the challenges these students face vis-a-vis identity, culture, family obligations and pressures, feeling “othered” from fellow students on campus?

Discuss the implications of being a first generation college student. What are the challenges these students face vis-a-vis identity, culture, family obligations and pressures, feeling “othered” from fellow students on campus? How might students approach these challenges to move towards eventual academic and personal success? Utilizing the works of Castro and perhaps Rodriguez, coupled with an outside academic source, analyze the implications and approaches to being a first generation college student.
Suggestions for outside reading include essays on first generation student success rates, campus housing limitations for first generation students, the non-traditional college student in the classroom, programs designed and implemented to encourage first generation college student success, inclusivity culture on campus or lack thereof on college campuses.

Demonstrate how problem-posing approaches to education benefit the student and the classroom environment at large. In other words, why is Freire such a staunch advocate for the implementation of problem-posing education over the long utilized banking concept? What are the potential advantages to transitioning away from a banking concept and towards problemposing? In an education system struggling with maintaining student success (such as here in America) how could problem-posing curriculum lead to advancement in education? Utilizing Freire’s work coupled with an outside academic source, analyze the problem-posing educational theory and the implications of such an approach being implemented in the educational curriculum of struggling systems.
Suggestions for outside reading include essays on Finland’s educational system (currently ranked the most successful education system of industrialized countries), the Montessori method of education, which mirrors many of Freire’s tenets, or articles on contemporary career expectations/what interviewers are looking for in potential hires (the ability to readily problem solve).
