Select a current piece of pop culture – a TV show or series, a film, a song, video, etc. – and discuss its influence on the identity of a particular individual or group.Does this pop culture work reinforce or challenge ideas or stereotypes about this individual or group?

This week we have read selections that discuss the influence of media, society, and culture and a variety of significant issues. For this paper, you have two options:

  1. Follow one particular story in the news media throughout a 2-week time period, taking a close look at how the reporting may have changed throughout that time. Argue for how the coverage of the story has impacted the event itself. How is the identity of those included in the story or reading/seeing the coverage changed? Through words/catchphrases? Through pictures? Through music? What is the outcome? Is someone’s identity changed? Is the nation changed? Remember you are not reporting on the event; your reader will most likely be generally familiar with the event you’re discussing. You are arguing for how the reporting and coverage of the event has changed the identity of someone in particular, analyzing a particular aspect of the reporting/coverage. Again, a specific connection and thesis is crucial here: the more specific your connection, the more in depth your analysis and argument will be, and the more interesting your entire paper will become.

  1. Select a current piece of pop culture – a TV show or series, a film, a song, video, etc. – and discuss its influence on the identity of a particular individual or group. For an example, consider Steinem’s essay “Wonder Woman.” Does this pop culture work reinforce or challenge ideas or stereotypes about this individual or group? How does it fit into a larger body of work about this particular individual or group? You will want to be specific in your selection (i.e., you might want to select a few episodes of a TV series rather than the entire series); consider discussing a specific character from a film or the setting, a particular scene, etc. Make sure you select a work that provides some depth and complexity; this doesn’t mean that it has to be “high” art, only that it will provide opportunities for a complex analysis.

Write a letter analyzing the social media output of a company that you would like to work for someday. This assignment focuses on learning the skill of analysis, which is where you take information and draw conclusions from it based on observations you make.

You will be asked to write a letter analyzing the social media output of a company that you would like to work for someday. The purpose in writing the letter is to demonstrate your understanding of how professionals use social media in the real world and then draw some conclusions from the actual social media content using the rhetorical skill of analysis.

This assignment focuses on learning the skill of analysis, which is where you take information and draw conclusions from it based on observations you make.  In other words, you will not simply be summarizing the social media postings of your chosen company; you will use those postings as a basis from which to draw a series of conclusions.

The letter must include (1) a short introduction in which you introduce yourself and why you are writing, (2) a section in which you analyze THREE social media platforms currently being used by the company, (3) a section in which you make recommendations about how they might use social media differently or what other social media platforms they might wish to try. It must be written to an actual person at the company.

Aim for 750-1250 words.

If you choose Burger King (aim higher!) for your company, you might look at their Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook feeds, all of which are filled with minimal text and lots of images of hamburgers and fries; you might also notice that they usually posted early in the morning or before lunchtime. Your analysis would reveal that they are primarily using all their social media platforms to appeal to young males who might crave these items in the middle of the day. In your recommendations section, you might suggest differentiating their social media platforms more clearly, or using at least one platform to appeal to women (or health-conscious men), or using a platform they currently don’t use.

Your sources for this essay will primarily be primary; in other words, you will use the actual social media postings from your company as evidence to support your analysis and your recommendations. You might also compare their social media output with the output of rival companies. Use screenshots of those postings throughout your letter to support your claims and visually break up the text. Make it look good.
