Overview

Identify some area where you want to examine your motivation more deeply.

Details

Draw or diagram your expectancies, values, and costs associated with that drive . You may use paper/pencil or a digital diagramming tool. You can represent the analysis in any way that makes sense to you , but you must include some indicator of what you identify as expectancies, values, and costs and multiple aspects aligned with each one. Aim to identify between 7-10 total, with at least 2 for each category .

At the end in 3-5 sentences, you should reflect on: a) whether this cost benefit analysis would predict you as motivated OR not, and b) what can you change to improve your motivations in the future.

NOTE: There are hundreds of ways you can visualize your cost benefit analysis and complete this assignment successfully — we want you to be creative! However, we have gotten many requests from students in the past for a model, so  find one possibility shared below . Do not let this LIMIT your thinking, but instead GUIDE your understanding of our expectations for your success.

What’s the title of the song? What’s the name of the band leader and/or band? Describe the general character of the music: what’s the atmosphere, vibe or emotional content of the piece? How would you describe the tempo ? Does the music sound consonant or dissonant – or something in between?

Listening Journal 2

Write a separate paragraph for 8 different jazz songs/pieces that you listen to in a radio or streaming broadcast. For each paragraph, you’ll need to address all of the bullet points listed below.
When you are ready to submit your assignment, click on the blue “Submit Assignment” button above, then copy & paste your work into the Text Entry box . Be sure to click the “Submit Assignment” button before leaving the page.

The Listening Journal will help you become more familiar with the diverse sounds of the jazz tradition, and will assist you in developing a detailed approach to what I call “active listening.” The critical listening skills that you develop in this assignment will also help you succeed on the concert report assignment, due later in the term.

NOTE: this assignment is identical to Listening Journal 1. It consists of writing eight more journal entries.

Prompt for Listening Journal 2:
1. Tune into any jazz radio broadcast – this can include internet or satellite radio. If you use a service like Pandora, be sure to choose a jazz genre, and do not allow it to include related genres. A good local resource in San Diego is Jazz 88 – KSDS . It’s also streaming online at http://www.jazz88.org.
2. Write 8 journal entries – one for each song that you listen to – addressing all of the following bullet points for each song :

  • What’s the title of the song?
  • What’s the name of the band leader and/or band? This information is clearly provided on internet and satellite radio. If you’re listening to a traditional radio broadcast, DJs announce this info every now and then.
  • What’s the instrumentation?
  • Describe the general character of the music: what’s the atmosphere, vibe or emotional content of the piece? How would you describe the tempo ? Does the music sound consonant or dissonant – or something in between?
  • How does the music unfold from beginning to end? This is the most important aspect of this assignment, and should comprise at least half of each of your 8 journal entries. This can include descriptions of shifts in mood and character, interesting exchanges/dialogues between instruments/musicians, descriptions of solos, and other notable moments.

Identify the main argument and / or purpose of the speech . Provide a brief summary of the speech for context. This should be done within a few sentences. Examine the ways in which the aim of the speech’s argument is supported through rhetorical and persuasive strategies.

Rhetorical Analysis: The Persuasive Art of Commencement Speeches

Assignment Purpose:

According to Laura Bolin Carroll, rhetoric is “the way we use language and images to persuade.” From political parties to Instagram to the five seconds of advertisement you have to suffer through before the “skip ad” link becomes active on YouTube, it’s easy to see how Carroll’s statements about how “our worlds are full of … social influence” still ring true . Further, in light of the volatility that has erupted over the past few years, it’s all the more important that we take a closer look at how rhetoric is used in human interactions as a step into becoming a more informed consumer of information.

Assignment Overview:

For this essay we will be closely reading a commencement speech in order to better understand how rhetorical shaping takes place. The aim of the assignment is to identify the writer’s thesis  and to analyze the rhetorical strategies/ persuasive methods used in order to develop their idea(s)/achieve their purpose. Your essay should not be just a summary of the speech, nor should it be a review based on your personal opinions on the topic of it.

Unit Steps:

Review the Lectures in this unit/block

  • Read through the selected commencement speeches and then complete your discussion post 2.
  • Read Carroll’s “Backpacks Versus Briefcases: Steps Towards Rhetorical Analysis” and complete your discussion post 3
  • Complete your “lead-up activity: “Rhetorical Steps” on your ONE chosen speech
  • Draft your Essay
  • Turn in your final draft

Essay Components:

Your essay should do all of the following:

Identify the main argument and / or purpose of the speech .

Provide a brief summary of the speech for context. This should be done within a few sentences.

Examine the ways in which the aim of the speech’s argument is supported through rhetorical and persuasive strategies (e.g., presentation of facts, dismissing credibility of counterfactual information, not addressing certain related issues, etc.). What is the writer’s purpose? What is the argument/thesis (which might be implicit or explicit)? What assertions/claims are made? Are there fallacies, contradictions, or inconsistencies? What is the attitude or viewpoint of the writer? What is the tone of the piece?

What rhetorical strategies does the writer use to make their point? How does the structure and the detail elements of the article help achieve its purpose?

To focus your ideas, make sure to represent the best evidence or claims the article is using to achieve its purpose. Explain why these seem to be the most persuasive and analyze how the writer uses them to convince an audience.

Minimum Requirements:

Length: 2-4 double-spaced pages.

Format: Follow MLA guidelines. Look on Canvas for resources and do your best. This is your first essay, so I just want to see what you can do with it.

Source Usage: You will choose ONE of the speeches we read together as a class from week 1  and you will use Carroll’s “Backpacks Versus Briefcases” as a way to support your analysis of the speech That is all that is required, although if you CHOOSE to use other sources, you must cite on your works cited page.

Tell us the title of the song/piece, and the name of the lead musician. Explain why you find each song interesting.

Jazz tradition

Now that you’ve developed a broader understanding of the jazz tradition,S share with your classmates some links to jazz music that you’ve discovered. We’ve not yet studied jazz in the 1960s and beyond, but if you’re familiar with any of this music, you can post links to it as well.

For your initial post, include 2 links to any online source of jazz music (YouTube is a great resource for both video and audio-only links). Tell us the title of the song/piece, and the name of the lead musician (and the name of the band, if appropriate). Then, explain why you find each song interesting. If you post more than 2 links, you’ll likely receive extra credit points.

For this forum, you are required to submit posts on at least two different days, and complete two elements:

  1. First, submit your initial post to the forum by Friday, by copying or typing directly into the Reply box, which you’ll find below these instructions (just be. Be sure to always click the Post Reply button when you’re done.

What are the qualifications for the occupational career; the duties and work conditions in the career; and the compensation in the career, including ways a person in this career can make a difference in the world?

Computer engineering

In your best English and in only your own words except for direct quotations, write a research paper of at least eight full pages plus the works-cited list on the occupational career you post in 4.2. Your research paper will respond to all aspects of this prompt:

Prompt: What are the qualifications for the occupational career; the duties and work conditions in the career; and the compensation in the career, including ways a person in this career can make a difference in the world?

All the information in your research paper must come from research you do for this assignment during our fall class. Do not use any information you had or found before starting to work on this assignment. Make sure all your sources are reliable. Do not change the career you posted in 4.2 for this assignment even though you may need to narrow or broaden your career based on the material you find. Generally, the narrower the topic (in this case, career), the better as long as you can fully support your paper.

All the points you make have to be supported with quotations, summaries, or paraphrases from reliable entries on your works-cited pages.

Type your paper in the ninth edition of Modern Language Association (MLA) style, in size 12 Verdana black font. Except when quoting exact words, please stick to third person and do not use contractions. Please use no more than two block quotations.

Tell how the source is effective or not. Did it achieve its purpose? Was it accurate? Logically sound? Was the information significant and relevant?

LGeekBT: The Damage of “Queerbaiting.”

You should approach this paper by providing a beginning, middle, and end about the chosen source.
Begin by introducing the source. Provide relevant background information on the topic, information on the author, and relevance or appeal to the intended audience. Include your thesis, which gives an overall assessment of the source.

Then summarize the source in a couple of paragraphs. Remain objective. Just report the main points and sub points.
Then assess the source. Tell how the source is effective or not. Did it achieve its purpose? Was it accurate? Logically sound? Was the information significant and relevant? Include the strengths and weaknesses and agreement and disagreement sections. Determine if the source will be useful to your final paper/argument. The assessment/evaluation is the main purpose of this paper and should be the longest section.

Conclude by summing up all areas and ending with the overall assessment of the source’s effectiveness (restatement of thesis).
Do not use “I think/I believe” type of statements. You can present your findings while using third person point of view. Example: “This source is beneficial in supporting the argument that physical books are better than e-readers.” Instead of “I think this source will benefit my paper on books versus e-readers because….” Don’t do this. Aim to follow the third person tone of the first example.
