What is the most common type of geothermal plant? Describe the principle behind Binary geothermal power plant. What is the principle behind OTEC? Highlight the operational differences between three types of OTEC systems.

Renewable Energy Exam 2

1. Geothermal resources are divided into six categories. What are they and analyze them withpros/cons? (6 pts.)

2. What is the most common type of geothermal plant? Describe the principle behind Binary geothermal power plant.   (4 pts.)

3. What is the principle behind OTEC? Highlight the operational differences between three types of OTEC systems         (6 pts)

4. A tidal generating station (barrage design) produces electricity at an efficiency of 40% during the falling tide (only) from a basin that is 20 km2 in area with a tidal range of 10 m. Energy is stored during the rising tide and distributed uniformly in time. What is the average power output? (4 points) – Hint (see pages 408411)

5. The Pelamis is an excellent device for harvesting wave energy. It is constructed in four hinged sections and has a total length of 120 m. Discuss the relevance of this geometry and size (5 points)

6. Compare and contrast high-head/low-head hydro systems. What are the basic types of turbines for hydro power?       (5 pts)

7. The Hoover Dam has a head of 180 m and a maximum output capacity of 2080 MWe. If the generator efficiency is 90% what is the flow rate in m3/s at maximum capacity? (show the calculations) (5 pts)

8. What is Betz limit? Explain its relevance and factors involved in maximizing wind-turbine’s efficiency (5 pts)

9. Compare and contrast heat engine versus Photovoltaic devices of energy from the sun (5 pts)

10. Evaluate the usefulness of solar heating on the basis of heating requirements for a building (5 pts)

What are your impressions of this restoration plan? Is it detailed enough to give you a sense of the scope of the project?

Endangered Species

Instructions: Restoring habitat for endangered species has occurred across a wide range of ecosystem types and has been quite successful in some cases. For this assignment,  locate a restoration plan that specifically addresses habitat for endangered species.

If you are affiliated with the military, you may find some interesting plans for restoring species on bases all over the US.

Once you’ve located your case study, prepare a 3-4 double-spaced page paper addressing the following sections:

Problems and Goals: Why was this project initiated? Why is the particular species endangered? What were the major goals and/or objectives of this project?

Location and Challenges: Where is this project located? Why was this location chosen? Were there any particular challenges associated with the site?

Reference Conditions: Are any reference conditions or sites mentioned? Were these taken into account when designing the project?

Outcomes: What were the outcomes of the project? If none are listed, what do you anticipate as the outcomes?

General Impressions: What are your impressions of this restoration plan? Is it detailed enough to give you a sense of the scope of the project? Is anything missing? What have you learned about endangered species restoration from this case study?

Describe the methods used to examine the differences that were observed in the species richness or evenness or between populations from the study

Ecology PowerPoint Presentation

This report is about the difference in biodiversity or the difference in the populations of the Shenandoah Salamander that is found in the two study areas of Shenandoah National Park and the George Washington National Forest.

The proper technique for measuring this species, which is a population count to determine which habitat out of the two study sites that the Shenandoah salamander best thrives in. Both study sites have numerous trails that allow for the opportunity to observe this species.

One can also compare the results to past data then make an unbiased comparison to the two results.  My hypothesis for this study is that Shenandoah National Park will produce greater biodiversity and species success due to being situated in higher elevations which can reach up to 3000 feet which is typically more away from urban development and human populations.

Include the methods used to measure the differences in species richness and evenness or the methods used to measure the differences in the population characteristic (weight/mass).

In this section, describe the methods you used to answer your research question. Describe the methods used to examine the differences that were observed in the species richness or evenness or between populations from the study:

Take this information from the appropriate reports to compare the differences in these two communities based on your hypothesis.

You can use the graphs that you create in your presentation to explain the differences that you observed.

You will start to explain possible reasons behind the differences that you observed. This is where you will start to bring in what you have learned from this ecology course to explain your observations.

What is the certification process for each of your Green Initiative/Eco Label you selected?

Green Market Activity

Part 1
Using the Green Initiative/Eco Label you selected, what are the standards associated with the green label?

What is the certification process for each of your Green Initiative/Eco Label you selected?

Do you think that this Green Initiative/Eco Label you selected is legitimate? Why, or why not?

Discuss your rationale for why you think the label is or is not legitimate.

Does the label comply with the FTC’s Environmental Claims:

Summary of the Green Guides? Discuss specific points in your summary to which the label does or does not comply.

Does the presence of this Green Initiative/Eco Label influence your purchasing decision? Why, or why not?

Part 2

Using the data you collected and the useful websites compose a scholarly report about Green Marketing:

Compose an introduction and conclusion to your paper.

Write a one-page summary about green labeling, greenwashing, and the information you gathered from your three Green Initiative/Eco Labels.

Incorporate information from the Tsai and Dahl articles (pp. 112 – 122) in the textbook. Do not forget to cite and reference your sources.

You are required to have a minimum of three sources. All sources used must be referenced using APA format. Submit the completed template to the instructor for grading.

Explain how forests are impacted by climate change in various places around the world and how forests themselves may offset aspects of climate change. Be specific in your examples, describing what is happening and where.

Web Assignment

Using information from the New York Times Changing Forest website;

Explain how forests are impacted by climate change in various places around the world and how forests themselves may offset aspects of climate change. Be specific in your examples, describing what is happening and where.

What are some possible consequences to their ecosystems if this species were to go extinct, or greatly diminished in population? (endangered)

Biodiversity Status of Species

Research – from academic/scholarly sources – their biodiversity status in the original habitat in which you have observed them, completing a 1-page write-up (double-spaced) for each species. Consider these questions during your research:

What is their current biodiversity status? (Threatened? Endangered? Thriving?)

What are their historical trends for changing biodiversity? (if known)

What sources of threat exist to them? (Natural predators? Humans? Human practices/processes?)

What are some possible consequences to their ecosystems if this species were to go extinct, or greatly diminished in population? (endangered)

What efforts (if any) are currently happening to help preserve this species?
