English and Mandarin are both considered “global languages” but for different reasons. Explain why each language is considered a global language.

Prompts: Choose ONE of the following prompts:

  1. English and Mandarin are both considered “global languages” but for different reasons. Explain why each language is considered a global language. Then, pick a side on this debate and present 1-2 pieces of additional support or evidence in favor of your argument.
  2. Most religions emerged from a single hearth area and then diffused spatially and temporally. Choose a religion or a sect/ denomination of a religion (i.e. Mormonism, etc.) and explain its diffusion patterns. Use reliable sources to back up your claims and complement our textbook-based learning.
  3. In lecture, we pointed out that looking globally at the geography of religion can hide a lot of diversity within a single country or smaller scale. Support this argument by choose,—, a country of interest to you and reporting on the geography of religious diversity. What spatial patterns do we observe when we ‘scale down’ and examine patterns at a more regional, provincial, or urban/rural level?

Where does the article fit in the data science pipeline? Explore specifically how the researchers dealt with the Data Capture phase of the data science pipeline. What data were used? What was the data source?

Formal research citation of one peer-reviewed research article (students may choose their professional citation format).

Summary of:

  • Hypothesis being tested
  • Use of GIS as a method
  • Outcome of the analysis in providing a solution to the societal concern.

Discussion of article in the Data Science context:

  • Where does the article fit in the data science pipeline?
  • Explore specifically how the researchers dealt with the Data Capture phase of the data science pipeline.
  • What data were used? What was the data source?
  • What measurement frameworks and/or representational models and/or other considerations were essential in connecting the data to GIS and other datasets? (e.g. was the data raster or vector, or did it combine those? were the aggregation units standard or devised especially for this project)

A personal connection:

  • Why is this article of interest to you?
  • Was it easy to find articles on this topic?
  • What is your reaction to the research overall, the data, and the results?

(This could include such ponderings as: Did you agree with the original hypothesis? Did anything surprise you about the hypothesis/data/methods? What implications did the research have for your area of interest? What would you like to see have happen next? If nothing surprised you, was it even worthwhile for the research to be completed? Did this article change how you view the issue in any way?)

City shrinkage can feel apocalyptic, as in the case of Detroit or in Halle, Germany. But what might be some up sides to the phenomenon? And what would you suggest as ways for a city like Detroit to fight against, but also to successfully manage population decline?

Shrinking city

If you live in Philadelphia, you are no longer living in a shrinking city, at least according to the 2020 Census, which indicates the population grew by more than 5% since 2010. But this was the first census to mark growth since 1950 and since then the city has lost almost 25% of its peak population.

City shrinkage can feel apocalyptic, as in the case of Detroit or in Halle, Germany. But what might be some up sides to the phenomenon? And what would you suggest as ways for a city like Detroit (or Pittsburgh) to fight against, but also to successfully manage population decline?

Select a place that you are familiar with and conduct a cultural landscape analysis of that place. Submit at least three photos that exemplify what it is you are sharing in your discussion.

  • the ethnic signatures on the landscape
  • the contemporary interactions and values of the landscape
  • the impacts of spatial scale (global forces, national pressures, local actions, etc) on the landscape.

Assignment: Select a place that you are familiar with and conduct a cultural landscape analysis of that place. Use the four ideas presented in the video and your own observations to submit a discussion (1500 words minimum/ word count must appear that the top of the page) about the culture of the place you selected. Submit at least three photos that exemplify what it is you are sharing in your discussion. Include citations of any sources you find that provide information or insight into the place you have chosen for your analysis.

Identify a specific type of cancer that affects your chosen membrane type and discuss pathological changes in your chosen membrane type at both gross and histological levels.

Choose a membrane type from the following types: mucous, serous, cutaneous, synovial. Prepare a written paper of at least 1000 words that includes:

Describe the structure and function of your chosen membrane type, including locations in the body and which four of the main tissue types it belongs to.

Identify a specific type of cancer that affects your chosen membrane type and discuss pathological changes in your chosen membrane type at both gross and histological levels.

Describe how subcellular features disrupt the cell cycle, which leads to the development of the cancer type identified in part B. Examine how current therapies attempt to address this disruption in the cell cycle. Differentiate how the body responds differently to a tissue injury vs cancer. Your paper should be formatted as a proper research paper with an introduction and conclusion. Do not simply follow the bullet points above, but really think about what you have learned and how that relates to other material we have covered, and knowledge you have from other courses you may have taken. The Research and Report assignments in this course are capstone assignments for each module. You should be integrating everything that you learned in the textbook, explorations, discussions, and lab activities into your papers.

What is/was your attitude toward the climate change crisis just prior to commencing this book, and why? For example, were you pessimistic? Fearful? Complacent? Cautiously optimistic? Otherwise?

Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think Is Critical to Solving the Environmental Crisis

Below is a template that I ask you to fill in. There are a series of questions about the book and your thoughts regarding its content and how it may or may not impact your personal geographies. I have intentionally posted this assignment as a Word file so that you can literally cut and paste this template into your own file and fill it in accordingly. I suggest you read these questions before you commence reading the textbook. This will make answering the first question more accurate, and alert you to the kinds of content that you should note while reading the book. Include the questions in your response and insert your answers immediately below each question. The length of your answers will vary. I encourage you to be succinct: short, direct and informative answers are preferred. When you have completed the assignment, uploaded it into you OWL drop box by midnight of the due date as a Word file.  Name your file as follows: You last name, Book Review. E.g., Gates Book Review
