Watch the video to answer questions about the video. Also research, draw and gather information on some fossils presented in the video. Except where you are asked to research or draw, all answers to questions are expected to come directly from the video.

Module 06: Assignments 5 and 6: Making N America: FOSSILS

Virtual Field Trip: North American Geologic History and Fossils

Video: Making North America: Lifehttp://www.pbs.org/video/nova-making-north-america-life/;

In this exercise you will watch the video (use the above link or Google and access from your closest PBS station.) to answer questions about the video. You will also research, draw and gather information on some fossils presented in the video. Except where you are asked to research or draw, all answers to questions are expected to come directly from the video.

Module 07 Activity 7 Correlation-Done as Homework

Prior to completing this exercise you should review correlation concepts. Pay close attention to the figures and captions. You must also watch the video tutorials on Stratigraphy and Correlation. You’ll correlate layers based on the method provided in the video tutorial.

You can either print this and complete the correlation by hand. Scan or take pictures and upload the completed document if you do it by hand.

You may also complete this on the Word document using simple drawing tools for the correlation and answering the questions within the document. These drawing tools are found in the Word toolbar and allow you to draw straight lines (Look under Insert, Shapes, then choose the line symbol).

The lab document in Word can be accessed here: Stratigraphic Correlation.Download Stratigraphic Correlation.

Refer back to the two examples on the Activity 6 details page as well as the Correlation Background and Examples Document and take another look at the correlation video.

Define the three basic types of rocks exist on the planet Earth? What are their types and examples? What is the mechanism involved in their formation? How to identify/differentiate between them?

Sedimentary rocks

A Analyze the sedimentary rocks in Fig. A6.3.1. Below each photograph, describe the rock briefly, using your observations of its apparent composition (what it is made of). texture (the size. shape. and arrangement of its parts), and anything else you notice that might help you to interpret the rock.

Observations, fizzes in acid: mostly shells

Observation: fizzes in acid                                            Observations: does not fizz in acid; grains

B REFLECT & DISCUSS Reflect on your observations and descriptions of sedimentary rocks in part A. Then describe how you would classify these rock specimens into logical groups. Be prepared to discuss your classification with your classmates and teacher.

Examine the spatial patterns of different types of paleclimatological datasets available at the global scale.
Is there any distinct spatial clustering of the coral cores?
Around what type of landscape features are the ice cores clustered?

Write brief essay of 500 to 750 words on the topic of isostatic rebound or depression using information from at least two journal articles.

Module 6: Assignment: Isostatic Depression or Rebound

Write brief essay of 500 to 750 words on the topic of isostatic rebound or depression using information from at least two journal articles. Include the following information in your essay:

  • Location,
  • Evidence,
  • Impacts,

Summarize the state of scientific understanding about global warming. Discuss a specific impact of global warming, including how to mitigate it and adapt to its impacts.

Topic: Choose A or B.

A) Environmental Justice.

1) Explain what it means.

2) Discuss a situation where environmental justice is relevant. (In other words, provide a case study where environmental justice applies.) The case study can be one discussed in class, or another of your choosing.

B) Global Warming.

1) Summarize the state of scientific understanding about global warming (i.e. what it is, what causes it, projected impacts).

2) Discuss a specific impact of global warming (like sea-level rise, or another), including how to mitigate it and adapt to its impacts.

Specifications: Short papers should be approximately 5 pages of text double-spaced, with standard margins, in something like Times New Roman 12 point font. Length does not include any images or cover page. Your paper should use at least 2 sources from course readings and/or films, and you may cite additional quality sources that you deem relevant. Citation style should be ASA author-date format, which uses in-text citations as you write and includes a full reference list at the end of your paper. (Please see posted citation resources in the Citation folder under Course Documents.) Complete writing expectations and grading criteria can be found in the Paper Grading Rubric, also located in this folder. Write in your own words, providing citations for all information you obtain from other sources (i.e., not just quotes). Minimal use of quotes is okay, but the few quotes you use should be in “” and cited appropriately (including page number) as outlined in the ASA resources provided.

Describe the women shown in the video. What signs of modernity in Dubai have you noticed as you watched the video? What is a meaning of hijab as mentioned by the women in the video?

Muslim women living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Unveiled introduces the audience to ten Muslim women from various backgrounds who now live in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Their discussion about hijab, the headscarf, revolves around a lecture on the same topic that was banned last minute but delivered anyway. In a time when Islam and especially Muslim women are represented as monolithic and beset by backwardness, the women in (un)veiled show the diverse, lively, argumentative debates in Muslim societies about the meanings of modernity, emancipation, and feminism.

Dubai, where the filmmaker lived for eight months, becomes a character in itself, showing the complex face of a contemporary Arab city. Filmmaker: Ines Hofmann Kanna.

After you watch the video, discuss the following questions in your reflection paper:

  • Describe the women shown in the video.
  • What signs of modernity in Dubai have you noticed as you watched the video?
  • What is a meaning of hijab as mentioned by the women in the video?
  • Are there any differences in opinions, as women talk about their religion, its importance in their lives, and the role of women in Muslim society? If so, describe the differences.
  • How do women react to a law adopted by the French government, in which veils are banned?
  • Express your own opinion on the problem discussed in the video.

Your paper should be one-page long (approximately 500 words), single-spaced, font

Describe an everyday decision-making situation in which you used cellphones or tablets. What was your hypothesis? Explain how and why this prediction came to be. How did you test your hypothesis, or in other words, how did you collect and analyze the data? Was your hypothesis supported? If not, how would you revise it for the next situation? Did you communicate your results?

Geology – Scientific Method

Everyone is a scientist and uses the scientific method in making everyday decisions. For example, in buying a watermelon, one makes the hypothesis that melons that exhibit certain characteristics will taste good. Qualitative observations are made utilizing personal experience, or upon the advice of others considered knowledgeable about the subject. Prominent features are evaluated, such as a melon’s color, ability to carry vibrations, firmness, lack of black or soft spots, as well as the melon’s size and price. Based on the hypothesis and these observations, the prediction is made concerning the quality of the watermelon. The experimentation, data collection, and data analysis come in the eating. If the watermelon is good, the hypothesis has been supported. If it is bad, the hypothesis is reevaluated, determining what factors may not have been considered. The results are always communicated, as people invariably comment on the equality of any watermelon they are eating.

Writer Describe an everyday decisionmaking situation in which you used cellphones or tablets (like the previous watermelon example). What was your hypothesis? Explain how and why this prediction came to be. How did you test your hypothesis, or in other words, how did you collect and analyze the data? Was your hypothesis supported? If not, how would you revise it for the next situation? Did you communicate your results?
