Define health issue/problem you wish to bring to light. Why is so important? Who is being affected by this health issue? Demographics and socioeconomic groups?

How Mental Health and Substance Abuse Corollate

Your project / research is linked to these thoughts.

It started when the interest crossed your mind (i.e. technology, engagement, diabetes, addiction, cancer, utilization, etc..).

Now think about the following questions:

  • Why is it important to research the information for the organization and/or the community?
  • How is this impacting your organization and/or community?
  • What are we doing to help the community and the organizations?
  • Who are we going to partner with to address this challenge?
  • Where do we start?
  • What is the data saying and can we address it?
  • What will it costs us and save us?
  • Who else is doing it (best practices)?
  • How can we address the issue at hand?

Above are samples of potential questions you look to address in your problem statement.

Assignment:

Submit a recorded powerpoint that answers these questions after researching the answers. No more than 4 slides/5 minutes.

1. Define health issue/problem you wish to bring to light. Why is so important?

2. Who is being affected by this health issue? Demographics and socioeconomic groups?

3. How is it affecting the community? The organization?

4. How much is it costing the individual and organizations involved in healthcare?

5. What is your measurable objective for this project?

Describe historical antecedents of epidemiology. Explain elements of causality and how they impacted your research. Explain Hill’s criteria for evaluation of epidemiologic associations.

Research and Compile

Compile the work that you submitted in Units III and V into a single document, and you will add the components listed below to complete your final research paper:

  • a title page,
  • an introduction,
  • a brief summary of the impact of historical epidemiologic research on your topic,
  • ethical considerations surrounding your topic,
  • a brief discussion of the etiology of your topic,
  • a description of the elements of causality for your topic using Hill’s criteria, and
  • a summary.

Make certain that you integrate your previous work (submitted in Units III and V) in a sensible and organized way in order for the final research paper to flow seamlessly from one section to another. You should use section headings as a way to keep your paper visually organized.

Based on how they fit into your particular research topic, make certain that the areas below are addressed.

  • Describe historical antecedents of epidemiology.
  • Explain elements of causality and how they impacted your research.
  • Explain Hill’s criteria for evaluation of epidemiologic associations.

Choose a contemporary public health issue (e.g., bioterrorism, gun violence, or natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires), its impact on public health, and strategies for mitigating and managing it once the issue occurs.

Contemporary Public Health Issue

Although the United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, it is far from being the healthiest. Life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, but Americans have shorter lifespans and experience more illness than people in other high-income countries. This assignment gives you an opportunity to put together what you have learned in this course, including, but not limited to:

  • public health policy, policymaking process, and law;
  • public health and the legal system;
  • individual and human rights in public health; and
  • social justice, ethics and public health policy.

Choose a contemporary public health issue (e.g., bioterrorism, gun violence, or natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires), its impact on public health, and strategies for mitigating and managing it once the issue occurs.

Following APA guidelines, create a PowerPoint presentation of 17-20 slides (plus title and reference slides) on the contemporary public health issue you have chosen and a human rights ethical dilemma. You will present this work to a team of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials tasked with developing global policies for addressing the impact of contemporary public health issues around the world.

Your presentation should assess:

  • the human rights concerns associated with the selected issues in public health policy,
  • the conflicts of interest between public health policies and your selected emerging public health issue, and
  • the gaps in the current health law that apply to the contemporary public health concern you selected with recommended suitable policy interventions to address the selected contemporary public health issue.

How should your group allocate the additional beds? What would be the change in profits from your allocation? Which constraints are binding at the optimum? Which are not?

Quantitative Methods in Health Care Management

Case Analysis – Resource Allocation

Notes:  All subparts of each question are worth 0.75 points each. To receive credit you must submit the Excel spreadsheets in which you calculate your answers.

1. The CEO at your hospital group has asked you to determine the most profitable approach to expanding capacity (i.e., number of beds) across your three locations. The estimated increase in profits from expansion is $1000/bed at Wesley Chapel, $1250/bed at Brandon, and $700/bed at Clearwater. You have a total of 500 beds to allocate across the three locations. There are 400 nursing hours that you be allocated across the facilities. The Wesley Chapel location requires 15 nursing hours per bed, the Clearwater location requires 12 hours per bed, while the Brandon location requires 20 hours per bed. Finally, you must account for the administrative support requirements for each facility. Specifically, there are 350 possible hours and the Wesley Chapel location requires 20 hours per bed and the Brandon and Clearwater locations both require 5 hours per bed.

While not realistic, for this problem you can allocate a proportion of beds (in other words, you do not have to force the optimal values to be integers).

Using the above information, answer the following questions.

  1. Identify the decision variables.
  2. Specify the objective function using mathematical notation.
  3. Specify the constraints using mathematical notation.
  4. How should your group allocate the additional beds?
  5. What would be the change in profits from your allocation?
  6. Which constraints are binding at the optimum? Which are not?
  7. Are there any locations to which you will not allocate beds? If so, what would be the effect on profits of allocating a bed to that location?
  8. For each of the constraints that are binding, what would be the effect on profits from increasing the constraint amount (i.e., RHS number) by one unit?

2. You have been asked to determine the least costly staffing schedule for your clinic. You need to staff the clinic with eight individuals Monday through Friday and four on Saturday and Sunday. Your clinic guarantees your staff three consecutive days off each week. Any cycle that does not include a Saturday or Sunday costs your clinic $800 per cycle. Cycles that include Saturday or Sunday (but not both) cost $900 per cycle, while cycles that include both Saturday and Sunday cost $1000 per cycle. Cycles must be hired in whole units. With this information, complete the following tasks:

  1. Identify the decision variables.
  2. Specify the objective function using mathematical notation.
  3. Specify the constraints using mathematical notation.
  4. How many of each cycle should your clinic employ and what is the total cost that that your clinic will incur?
  5. Identify those constraints that are binding and those that are not.

An effective job description covers the critical tasks and attitudes required for success. Create a format appropriate for a job description in the healthcare field.

Healthcare Administrator Job Description

Careers can be identified by what is required to accomplish the goals and tasks of the job.

You will analyze the descriptions of actual healthcare administration jobs to determine characteristics and then create a job description of your own to demonstrate your understanding of the characteristics.

Create a 3-page paper (not including the title and reference pages) in a Word or text document for your response.
Use APA format for the paper, title page, references page, and in-text citations.
Create a title page and references page in APA format.
Develop an introduction and conclusion for your paper.

Part 1: Identifying and Defining
Knowing what is required for a job is an aspect of the job description.

Using a job search website, locate two different job descriptions related to one career in healthcare administration.
Analyze the characteristics in both descriptions.

Part 2: Create a Job Description
An effective job description covers the critical tasks and attitudes required for success.

Create a format appropriate for a job description in the healthcare field.
Group the characteristics by type, listing the requirements for each including: leadership skills, communication skills, and personal skills.
Be complete in your original description of the characteristics to ensure someone applying for the job would understand expectations.

Part 3: Reflection
As a conclusion for your paper, reflect on why this job might or might not be a good fit for you. Use what you learned from your research and the characteristics identified by Success Profiles, Inc., for effective healthcare leaders to discuss your suitability for the job:

Select an administrator in a healthcare setting (please use an example of a administrator in a Long Term Nursing Home Setting), and create a profile of the person either from an interview or personal knowledge.

Healthcare Leaders

Healthcare administrators work in many workplace settings.

Select an administrator in a healthcare setting (please use an example of a administrator in a Long Term Nursing Home Setting), and create a profile of the person either from an interview or personal knowledge.

In selecting the person, consider the following:

What healthcare setting are you personally interested in exploring? LTC nursing home
Who serves as a healthcare administrator in that particular setting? Justin Hinker
What makes that person a leader?
As an original response, share the profile of the healthcare administrator.

Describe and analyze both a patient’s and a healthcare professional’s blog to gain their perspectives.

Analyses: Patient & Professional Perspectives

Description: Understanding both patients’ and healthcare professionals’ perspectives about health and healthcare delivery enhances our understanding how they communicate in health situations, why they interact as they do, and what motivates them to act on health messages. This is a two-part assignment where you will describe and analyze both a patient’s and a healthcare professional’s blog to gain their perspectives.

Step 1: Review Chs. 3-5 and select a blog authored by someone experiencing a chronic disease or other impactful health condition.

Option #1: Find a blog on your own. For patient blogs, for instance, perhaps you know someone who has used caringbridge.com or carepages.com. Or try typing in a type of disease or condition in your search engine (ex. “cancer patient blog”). Whatever you choose, make sure that the blog gives sufficient information for you to complete the assignment. Remember that you are analyzing the words and experiences of a person or group of people, not an entire organization (like NarcAnon).

Option #2: OR, you may pick one from the list I’ve compiled below (I skimmed and they appear useful, if not always current). Just google the phrase below and you’ll reach the blog:

  • Wheelchair Kamikaze (Multiple Sclerosis, up to 2018)
  • Chris’s Cancer Community
  • Psoriasisdiary.com
  • LGBTeetotaler (addiction)
  • Sober Black Girls Club (group of contributors)
  • A Crack in the Wall (cancer)
  • The Tales of a Stroke Patient and More
  • Yoga for Diabetes
  • Breast Cancer…But Doctor, I Hate Pink!
  • Alishambridges.com (psoriasis)
  • I’m still Josh (HIV)

Step 2: Review the profile/background of the blogger. Then, select no more than 5 substantive blog entries from the past year that interest you and look for connections between those entries and Chs. 3-5. You may have to search more than 5 to find ones that you can write about.

Step 3: Write a brief analysis paper (APA format) using these content and format guidelines.

  • Biography [heading] Brief bio of the blogger for your introduction—personal background, credentials (if any), their vision or perspective on the blog’s purposes, is there an intended audience, etc.— 1 paragraph
  • Conceptual Links [heading] Select 2 concepts from Chs. 3-5 that you believe are present in the blog entries. First, describe the chapter concept in your own words. Then, explain how the concept is present in the blog entry. Give examples. Brief quotes are okay. Repeat the process for the second concept you pick.
  • Critique [heading] Evaluate the blog’s content. Some topics to consider (don’t have to answer all): quality of information, compelling communication of ideas (keeps your interest), attractiveness of layout, helpful additional features (photos, links to websites, digital images, etc.), what you liked/disliked. Explain your opinions. End your critique with whether or not you would recommend this blog to someone interested in learning about health or health communication and why.

Summarize the LHI-Leading Health Indicators: Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity and discuss possible data sources for this information, and explain why you think there has been a lack of progress.

HA 530-week 1

Since 1990, the U.S. government has published 10-year national objectives for improving the health of Americans. A select group of 26 objectives is monitored periodically and published on the Healthy People website. The most recent science-based goals, Healthy People 2020, were published in 2010 and expanded the goals to four major areas:

  • General health status
  • Health-related quality of life and well-being
  • Determinants of health
  • Disparities

Summarize the LHI-Leading Health Indicators: Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity and discuss possible data sources for this information, and explain why you think there has been a lack of progress.

The project manager does not seem concerned and is excited about announcing completion of the project soon. The department’s bonus depends on it, too. Are you obligated to do anything?

Discussion two cases

Case 1

  • You have a small healthcare consulting business. Company named HealthNet Insutance plans to acquire a new Web-base scheduling system, and has hired you to evaluate bids from vendors. Your spouse is a Director for one of the bidders, Networkx.  She oversaw most of the writing for the bid, you read the bid, and you think it is excellent.   The bid is about $750,000
  • Will you tell about your spouse’s connection with Networksx?
  • How will you position yourself?
  • Will you recommend Networksx to HealthNet Insurance?

Case 2

  • Case #3. You are a member of a team working on a computer-controlled crash-avoidance system for medical records management. You think the system has a flaw that could endanger your patient’s privacy and, possibly, health.
  • The project manager does not seem concerned and is excited about announcing completion of the project soon. The department’s bonus depends on it, too.
  • Are you obligated to do anything?
