Assignment #2: Multi-Stressed Family-Case Assessment

This assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to assess and conceptualize a multi-stressed family. For this assignment, you are asked to view the following film: “THE LOIS WILSON STORY: WHEN LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH” https://youtu.be/HJ6jiIK2oTU . The movie is in the online classroom on Blackboard.

The film for the focus of this paper. The characters in your selected film will be your clients. You will provide a thorough behavioral description of this family, including a detailed assessment and treatment plan and how you engaged each member in the process. You will assess this family’s functioning based on what you learn about them in the film. Your “work” with this family does not need to exactly follow the events that transpire in the plot of the movie. The film should be used as a starting point for case conceptualization, to get a sense of your clients and their needs. Again, DO NOT recap the movie. Based on the readings assigned in class, you may have selected additional outside readings and lecture material you will consider this family from various angles and demonstrate critical use of the material to inform your conceptualization of the family. Explicitly demonstrate how you are applying course readings and concepts, and properly reference readings on which you draw (your textbook and 5 different peer-reviewed SCHOLARLY citations). Standard college-level writing is expected following APA format. In-text citations are required written in appropriate APA 7th ed. format. Also, you need to include a reference page for the full citations, and they must be written in the appropriate APA format. A separate cover page is also required for this assignment. You may refer to yourself as “the counselor” to use a professional tone.

Are we wrong in identifying the mind exclusively with what the brain does? Is “self” more than the brain? How might psychological disorders have evolved? Why have they not become extinct?

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

Discussion topic: As hard as it is to define the boundaries between what we call physical and what we call mental, assigning disorders to either domain is even harder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders avoids the problem by classifying disorders according to their symptoms and not their causes. This is analogous to grouping appendicitis, a stomach ulcer, and intestinal bloating together as Sore Tummy Syndrome.

In sickness behavior, an illness of the body becomes an illness of the mind. An inflammation of the brain becomes schizophrenia or depression. Mental and physical stress both contribute to mental and physical disorders. Can you decide what causes what?

Step 1: Address the following questions in discussion in one paragraph for each of the three question items:

Questions

  1. Are we wrong in identifying the mind exclusively with what the brain does? Is “self” more than the brain?
  2. How might psychological disorders have evolved? Why have they not become extinct?
