What is the impact of organizational governance on the implementation of strategic goals?

Week 2 Discussion

Write a 175- to 265-word response to the following:

What is the impact of organizational governance on the implementation of strategic goals?

Describe the assessment(s) you would use to validate her diagnosis, clarify missing information, or track her progress. Summarize how you would explain the diagnosis to Kaylin. Explain how you would engage her in treatment, identifying potential cultural considerations related to substance use.

Of the substance disorders, alcohol-related disorders are the most prevalent even though only a small percentage of individuals actually receive help. Recidivism in the substance treatment world is also very high. As research into treatment has developed, more and more evidence shows that genes for alcohol-metabolizing enzymes can vary by genetic inheritance. Women have been identified as particularly vulnerable to the impacts of alcohol. Native Americans, Asians, and some Hispanic and Celtic cultures also have increased vulnerability to alcohol misuse.

Even with these developments, treatment continues to spark debate. For many years, the substance use field itself has disagreed with mental health experts as to what treatments are the most effective for substance use disorders and how to improve outcomes. The debate is often over medication-assisted treatment (MAT) versus abstinence-based treatment (ABT). Recently the American Psychiatric Association has issued guidelines to help clinicians consider integrated solutions for those suffering with these disorders. In this Discussion, you consider your treatment plan for an individual with a substance use disorder.

To prepare: Read “The Case of Kaylin” and the materials for the week. Then assume that you are meeting with Kaylin as the social worker who recorded this case.

By Day 3

Post a 300- to 500-word response in which you address the following:

  • Provide the full DSM-5 diagnosis for Kaylin. Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may need clinical attention).
  • Describe the assessment(s) you would use to validate her diagnosis, clarify missing information, or track her progress.
  • Summarize how you would explain the diagnosis to Kaylin.
  • Explain how you would engage her in treatment, identifying potential cultural considerations related to substance use.
  • Describe your initial recommendations for her treatment and explain why you would recommend MAT or ABT.
  • Identify specific resources to which you would refer her. Explain why you would recommend these resources based on her diagnosis and other identity characteristics (e.g., age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, class, ethnicity, religion, etc.).

For this assessment, you need to write a full Qualitative Research. You may use any of the work you have produced so far in the module such as the draft qualitative analysis (IPA) or the draft literature review. If you submitted a draft in unit 6, apply the feedback to make improvements.

You will also need to complete an analysis for two conversations from your chosen topic – you are able to use the two Listening Project recordings that you previously transcribed and coded during Lecturecast 3, or you can choose to use one of the alternative topics and recordings provided.

It is important that you analyze both conversations using IPA ( ”Interpretative phenomenological analysis” ) and you must use the same analysis for all the data. In the Methods, it is important to state that you analyzed pre-recorded conversations and the source of these (https://sounds.bl.uk/Oral-history/The-Listening-Project). IPA is appropriate for analyzing conversations of this type, although this is not the most common application.

For details on the consent of participants in the Listening Project see the Listening Project website.

You should include the literature review that you previously submitted for formative feedback within this assignment and you will be marked on all sections, as well as the structure and presentation of the entire report.

The report should include the following:
– Abstract (150-200 words) plus three keywords at the end of the Abstract.
– Introduction including Literature Review (450 words)
– Methods (400 words)
– Findings (500 words)
– Discussion and conclusions (500 words)
– References (following the APA standards)
– Appendices

The total word count is 3,000 words. Please note that References and Appendices are not included in the final word count. In addition, the word counts for the different sections are advisory, so if you do not meet these you will not be penalized. However, please use these as a guide, and do not exceed the total word stated above.

Select a topic or condition to study. You will need to do some background work and present an Introduction/Background section. Develop a clear purpose for your study. Clearly articulate your research question and your hypothesis.

Methods (Liz and Celia)

-Celia (Data Collection)

Ethical Considerations (Liz- (ME), if you can find me more research on protecting children in research that would be a huge help! 😊 )

Research Question

Will educational intervention for 15 minutes a day either in person or at home with supplementary material, focused on literacy, among 6–8-year-old children within “villa miseria” result in increased attendance rates in the “villa miseria” educational program?

Participants

Participants in this study will consist of 6-8-year-old children that live within “villa miseria”, a large urban shanty town in Buenos Aires, Argentina, within two miles of the educational program site located within “villa miseria.” This age range was selected from the synthesis of research that indicates that by the age of 6, most children are cognitively advanced enough to learn to read. Since this study will be focused on finding effective ways to improve attendance in the education program, since the nearest school is unsafe to travel to at 7 miles away, researchers have chosen to focus on the more at-risk population of children who either do not attend school at all or attend the education program within “villa miseria” less than once a week. There will be no preference for specific genders and racial or ethnic backgrounds. Our cases will include children in this specified age range that have parental consent to participate in our study. Researchers will not exclude siblings from the same family and will work with families to ensure that each sibling in the specified age range can participate by offering a rotating schedule if necessary.

Controls in the experiment will be focused on providing the same educational experience to every child enrolled in the study. Therefore, children participating in this study will be given the same educational materials every week, be provided the same amount of timed one-on-one instruction, and be provided the same snack after every weekly session. Researchers will also compare the attendance rates of other children within the area with those in the study.

Ethical Considerations

Though researchers will be conducting their study in Argentina, researchers will comply with the recommendations provided by the National Commission for the protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research and federal regulations regarding protecting child research participants provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The study must be approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Children must have an informed consent form signed by their parents or guardians to participate in this study. In order to make sure consent is informed, translators will be available to offer support and help answer questions. Also, an informed consent form will be provided in the parent or guardian’s native language. If the parent or guardian is unable to read, a translator will again help with this process in order to obtain consent. Children and their families must not be coerced to participate; participation must be voluntary. While this study is considered minimal to no risk, researchers must be cognizant of the potential emotional and physical trauma of the children they are working with and use informed teaching methods to manage behavior and encourage participatory learning. Privacy must also be maintained for each child participant and therefore each participant will be assigned a pseudonym within the data analysis to maintain confidentiality. Researchers must understand the ethical landscape of only selecting children within the specified age group when there are many age groups within “villa miseria” that require educational intervention. However, due to the perceived benefits of providing extra educational resources to this age demographic, researchers consider this an acceptable level of risk.
