Having completed the course, discuss your thoughts about the course materials, course assignments, films, etc. What changes would you recommend that could be incorporated into the course?

Reflection paper

There are two parts to this reflection paper. First, historical background on our groups, and their SES today. This first part will be your thoughts about what you think would happened to a “new group” entering American society today? As a “minority” what can they expect? What would you tell this new group? The second part of this assignment is to review the course and give your thoughts on how to improve the course. Your report should be 2-3 pages in length, double spaced, and typed.

Imagine that a new minority group entered the United States today. They have no racial or ethnic ties to any of the minority groups we have studied. What experiences would you tell them to expect during the contact period? What advise would give this group on the pathways of being included into American society, pathways being strategies for integration and assimilation, or pluralism. Which group that we studied would you recommend this new group to follow and why? Keep in mind the concepts and terms we learned in class, for example, contact and conflict, assimilation, integration, the Noel hypothesis, identity, prejudice and discrimination, being a subordinate group, and the role of the dominate group. Finally, comment on what you think the future of race relation will be like in the U.S. in coming years, your life time? This report is based on your observations on all the information you picked up in this course. You can use some information from the textbook, but mostly your thoughts. What were your overall thoughts about what we covered in class about race relations?

Identify a strategy or policy from the Nixon presidency that related to the Cold War, and another from the Reagan presidency. In hindsight, describe your views of each approach and how effective (or not) each approach was.

”Cold Warriors”

The 1970s and 1980s brought remarkable changes for the Untied States. The Cold War between the US and its allies versus the Soviet Union and its allies/clients was still the dominant international issue. China was also going to start emerging as a major world power. Nixon was dealing with Vietnam and then Watergate—one of the pivotal scandals of modern history. Reagan would bring a new national spirit, and he would tackle economic problems by deregulation and moderating taxes—and he would be dealing with a very new type of Soviet leadership.

Discuss lessons in leadership with the examples of President Nixon and President Reagan:

What lessons does this story hold for how firms should be managed and governed? And what does it say about our ability to manage risk in large modern corporations operating in increasingly fast-moving and complex global markets?

Assignment

It took 19 years to build Knight Capital Americas LLC into the largest market maker on the New York Stock Exchange, but on August 1, 2012, it took only 45 minutes for the firm to be wiped out by an information technology (IT) problem: a change in the company’s software caused it to lose more than $450 million dollars in less than an hour. Although it was ultimately saved from bankruptcy when it was acquired two days later, the terms of acquisition were very unfavourable to the company’s shareholders.
